World War One / 1918 Photograph of Royal Army Medical Corps England Football Team
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather served in WW1 and was one of the lucky ones to come back home safely. I have in my possession a photograph to commemorate an international charity football match which was played between England (RAMC) and Scotland (RAMC). The match was played on 2nd January 1918 and the result was 1-1. The photograph is mounted on card and lists all the players. They were Monaghan, Bates, Moulson, Edge, Kinsella, Grice, Joseph Henry Southern, Ralphs, Lieutenant Stimson (Captain), Moorcroft and Eccleston. Others shown on the photo were their trainer (no name given), R. Rawcliff Esq, R. G. Barlow Esq and J. J. Lewis Esq. (Referee) - the photo was taken by a Blackpool photographer. This message has been posted to see if there's anyone out there who might be a descendant of one of these chaps and would like to see the photo  :D

Library and FHS Lookups / Belfast Newspaper Library - look up please
« on: Sunday 14 September 08 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Is there some kind person out there, who could look at some newspaper archives to see if my grand mother's inquest was published in a Belfast Newspaper? Her death certificate says she died on the 9th April 1940 in Belfast and her inquest was held by the Coroner for Belfast on 24th April 1940; she was only 20 when she died. I have written to the Public Records Office, however, they have confirmed that they cannot find the inquest file. I have emailed the Newspaper Library and they tell me that there were 4 newspapers in existence at the time : - Belfast Newsletter, Belfast Telegraph, Irish News and the Northern Whig. My last hope is that there will be something recorded in a newspaper from that time. Unfortunately, I don't live in Northern Ireland otherwise I would make the trip to the library myself.
Is there anyone out there who could advise me further or look up any possible newspaper archives??  :)

Antrim / Belfast Newspaper Lookup - Agnes Thompson Inquest 24th April 1940

Is there some kind person out there, who could look at some newspaper archives to see if my grand mother's inquest was published in a Belfast Newspaper? She died on the 9th April 1940 in Belfast and her inquest was held by the Coroner for Belfast on 24th April 1940. I have written to the Public Records Office, however, they have confirmed that they do not hold the inquest file. They have suggested contacting the North Ireland Court Service who may be able to help locate the post mortem records. I have a copy of the death certificate which was issued on the day of the inquest, so I don't think contacting the Court Service would achieve any more than the death certificate I already have. I assume that the inquest would have been reported in the newspaper, however, I'm not from Belfast and don't know which newspaper this would be - possibly the Belfast Telegraph??? Is there anyone out there who could advise me further or look up any possible newspaper archives??
Thank you  :)

Down / Donaghadee - Herdstown - Rocin Cottage
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
After spending time researching my father's side of the family and learning how to undertake family history research, I've just decided to start investigating my mother's side of the family which was not spoken about when her father was alive. He was a Thompson and lived in Herdstown at the time of his marriage (1938); his wife (maiden name Miskimmin) was from Hogstown. My grand father moved over to England in the early 1940's which is where he raised his family and where I'm writing from today. Is there anyone out there who remembers Rocin Cottage, Herdstown, Donaghadee or has Thompson, McClellands, Miskimmins or Buntings from Donaghadee in their family trees? ???

Staffordshire / POOLE FAMILY
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 20:56 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone out there who is researching the surname POOLE or has it in their family tree? Ellen (nee Fallon) married Arthur on 13th February 1888 at Stoke-on-Trent Register Office. He was living at 16 George St and she at 53 Park St, both Fenton district. Arthur had a brother called Leonard and their mother's name was Eliza and their father's name was Henry, however, Henry had died sometime before 1888. On the 1891 census, Ellen and Arthur were living at 9 Albert Rd, Fenton with his mother who was by now 52 (Eliza was born in Hanley); Ellen was 26 and Arthur was 28. Ellen was my great grand father's sister and I would love to be able to trace what became of her, however, I have been unable to find her (and the other family members I have mentioned) after the 1891 census. Ellen was born in Goldenhill.
Thanks

Galway / Fallons/Blakes in Galway
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 00:18 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone out there researching these families?? My gt gt grandfather was called Thomas Fallon (born about 1830) and he married a Mary Blake (born about 1840). They emigrated to England in the 1860's I think. Unfortunately, the census records only detail their place of birth as Ireland so I'm not sure their birth county was Galway. However, I've checked some sites and it would appear that the largest concentration of Fallon and Blakes in the mid 1800's was in Galway. I'd love to hear from anyone who is looking at Fallon or Blake family history.
Thanks :)

Staffordshire / Roman Catholic Chapels - Tunstall/Kidsgrove Area
« on: Wednesday 22 February 06 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace R.C. chapels that were in existence in the 1860's around Tunstall/Kidsgrove then I can find their parish records. I have found information in a book entitled "The Victorian History of the County of Stafford Vol VIII" which mentions the Tunstall Mission. The mission was founded in 1853; it started with a school and chapel on Plex St, Tunstall and was dedicated to St. Mary. A new church was built in 1869 on Sun St (now St. Aidan's St), Tunstall which remained in use till 1930 whereupon it was sold and became a garage. It is still there today and is called Chapel Garage. There was also another chapel, situated in John St (now Brakespeare St), Goldenhill which opened in 1871 and there is a much older church at Cobridge.
Is there anyone out there with any information or photos regarding the Plex St/Sun St/John St chapels or is aware of any chapels that I might have overlooked???? Thanks

« on: Friday 10 February 06 13:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out where in Kidsgrove Palin's Building were located. It was standing in 1867. Anyone out there know which street they were on? And was it just there for people to live in or did it have some other purpose?
Thanks

Staffordshire / Fallon's in Kidsgrove
« on: Friday 10 February 06 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone out there that has any information regarding a Thomas and Mary (nee Blake) Fallon. They lived in Kidsgrove in the 1860's. Both came from Ireland. They had 3 children, Ellen born in Goldenhill in1864, Patrick born in 1867 in Kidsgrove and Mary born in Kidsgrove in 1870. They lived at Cooper St in 1871 and then at Napier St in 1881. Thomas died in 1884 and is buried in Tunstall Cemetery. Patrick then moved to Lancashire and reached the ripe old age of 86. However, the whereabouts of Thomas' wife Mary and his 2 daughters is a mystery. He claimed in 1881 that he was a widower living only with his son but I have been unable to find any evidence of a death registration(s) or any other whereabouts. Hope there's someone out there with some info. Thanks
