Northumberland / Born in Botany Bay - Northumberland
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 23:51 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if any Rootschatter can help me solve this one.?

On the 1911 Census I have a James BROUGHTON, Merchant Seaman, aged 25 years living in a Boarding House at 7 Grove Villas, Poplar, London and he shows that he was born in Botany Bay, Northumberland.   Therefore he was born about 1886.

I am in possession of his Medal Roll for War Service during World War 1, which shows him born in Ashington, Northumberland, in 1886.   The information engraved on his Medals correspond with the Medals I have in my possession.   Also, I have a copy of one of his Crew Lists for 1914 which shows his Next-of-Kin residing at Hirst Road, Ashington, but, unfortunately, no Surname is given.

Now, I have searched BDM's and Census for a James BROUGHTON born Northumberland County in 1886 but can;t find any information.   Advice I have received from my 'close' relations here in Australia, say that he was born James WALKER and that he changed his Surname when he absconded from his home as a Lad.

Is it possible that there may be some BROUGHTON or WALKER descendants living in Northumberland or Australia who can assist me with my search.?    Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Jim, in Queensland.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / BROUGHTON James - born Ashington - 1886
« on: Monday 26 July 10 06:48 BST (UK)  »
James BROUGHTON was, subject to my information, born in Ashington in 1886.   He was a Merchant Seaman during the early 1900's to the 1920's and from information that I gleaned from the UK Archives his Next-of-Kin resided in Hirst Street, Ashington.   That was in 1916.   Unfortunately no house number or Surname was given.   As I am seriously searching for any information regarding his parentage, etc,, I wonder if there are any relatives out there who can assist me.?   I have searched all possible Census for the periods concerned but cannot find any ties.   Would it be possible that he did his seamanship training as a lad, in Newcastle or thereabouts.?   The earliest information I have on him is when he appears, in Australia, as an Able Seaman in 1915.   Thereafter, he remained in Australia, and I have all of his Records from that year on.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Northumberland / ARKLE, BROUGHTON, 1901 Census, Bothal Demesne, Northumberland
« on: Tuesday 06 July 10 07:17 BST (UK)  »
I would sincerely like to make contact with any descendants of Edward and Mary A. ARKLE, who on the 1901 UK Census were residing at 35 Fifth Row, Bothal Demesne, Northumberland.   Children Thomas and George were also included on the Census.   Mary WALKER, Mother of Mary ARKLE and John WALKER, Mary's Son were on it also.    I am particularly interested in John WALKER who I believe later changed his name to James BROUGHTON.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Jim

John WALKER, born Ashington, c 1882 and son of George and Mary Ann on the 1901 UK Census was residing with Edward and Mary ARKLE at 35 Fifth Row, Bothal Demesne.

It appears that he just disappeared completely, because he cannot be found on successive Census.   Any information or suggestions will be greatfully accepted.

I must add that Mary A ARKLE was his sister and that his Mother, Mary A WALKER were living at 35 Fifth Row, also.

TIA, Jim in Queensland.

London and Middlesex / WILLSON Family of 309 Lower Road, Deptford - c 1914
« on: Friday 04 June 10 00:14 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking any members of the WILLSON Family shown on the 1911 UK Census as residing at the above address.

My reason is that James BROUGHTON a Merchant Seaman from the ship 'Corsican Prince' at about that time showed his next of kin residing at that address.

Do any of the WILLSON family recall James having lived there or having an association with any member of the Family.?

Regards, Jim
