Armed Forces / Frederick Henry Kerslake 1894 - 1945
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 17:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Though I've been researching my family history on and off for a long time, I haven't before looked at military records and was after some advice please?

There is a big gap in my great-grandfather Frederick's history that I am trying to investigate.  I cannot find him on the 1911 census.  He was a Leading Seaman in the Royal Navy in 1918 when he got married to Mary, a WW1 widow with 3 small children, in Fife.  They had one child, my grandfather (also Frederick), who was born in Edinburgh in 1919 and who is there with Mary on the 1921 Scottish census.  In the 1921 English census Frederick Snr. is on HMS Walker at Devonport, and on the 1939 register he is in Cornwall, now living with Violet (they never married, presumably because he was still married to Mary, though Violet took his name).  In 1939 Mary is also living with someone else.

He was originally from Devon (Kingskerswell on 1901 census) and I have no information how he came to be getting married in Scotland.  I assume he was there with the Navy but to access the military records I have to pay an extra charge, even though I am subscribed to Find My Past, so before doing that I'd like to know whether the records are likely to tell me anything useful, including which ships he was on, where they went and when?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Lisa

The Common Room / Best place to search electoral roll information
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all
when I've posted previous questions, quite a few people have commented that they have found one of the people I mention on the electoral roll during the period I'm interested in.  However, when I try to search for these records myself (for example using FindMyPast and ticking only the "electoral roll" box) I either get nothing, or hundreds of variations.  I know the records are there because other people have found them.  So what is the best way of searching the electoral roll?  The main period I'm interested in is 1921 - 1939.

The Common Room / Property ownership information
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 09:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
is there any way of finding out who owned particular properties?  The period I am interested in is between the 1921 census and 1939 register.  I guess there is only the land registry or the electoral roll (though I realise that will only show occupancy not ownership) - I assume I have to pay for the former (but not the latter?)

Census and Resource Discussion / 1921 Census missing place and year of birth
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to nail down specific issues from earlier questions about my late Grandmother, Elsie Agnes Barber, for whom I can find no information between her birth in 1919 (London) and her marriage in 1939 (Cornwall) (she used her birth name when she married).

I cannot find her on the 1921 census, when she would have been 2.  I believe she was informally adopted at birth (pre-Adoption Act) so I've tried just searching on her birth year (+/- 1 year) and her two forenames.  This brings up a number of entries with both forenames, but not hundreds (thousands of simple Elsies, of course).  Among them are a handful with no birth year or place of birth given.  I've searched for birth records for these girls (Albey, Bonvalot, Brown and Foord) but can't find any (there is one Brown, but the location doesn't match the census).

1. On the basis that my search parameter was for records of children born from 1918 - 1920, can I safely assume that although there's no birth year given for these 4 records, their birth year will be from the requested period?

2. Is there any reason why there would be no places of birth, or birth certs in the surname recorded on the census, unless they were adopted?

3. If that's the case, and I realise no-one can answer this definitively, does it appear likely that she is one of these four girls?

4. Am I likely to gain any useful information from the census record, other than possibly getting an answer to my first question?  One of them (Brown) is from a location close to where she eventually lived in Cornwall, so I would start with that one.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
thanks,
Lisa

The Common Room / Marrying under 21 in 1939
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 15:58 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst searching for information on my late Grandmother, a Rootschatter pointed out that at the time of her marriage (September 1939) she was under 21.  Can someone explain to me what this meant in practice - would she have needed her parents' or guardians' permission, for example, and would this be recorded anywhere?  There is nothing on the marriage certificate and the witnesses were both from my Grandfather's side.  I ask because I believe she was informally adopted (pre Adoption Act) but kept her birth name, but I cannot find any record of her between her birth and marriage.

thanks,
Lisa

Hello
Is it possible to refine a search for births on Scotland's People by mother's maiden name? I am trying to find any births to two sisters whose married names were relatively common (Richardson and Dempster) and there are thousands - if I could refine by using their maiden name it would make things a lot easier, but I can't see a way to do it.  If not is this something that could be looked up for me? Access to the electoral roll would obviously help but from what I can see that can only be done in person, not on line?

many thanks

Scotland Resources / Access to 1939 register
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello and apologies because I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, but I can't see the answer anywhere.  I'm aware the Scotland version of the 1939 register is not available online, but is there anywhere where it's possible to physically view it?  And if so are there charges for that also?

thank you

Census and Resource Discussion / Census and 1939 Register questions
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have 3 issues I hope someone can advise on.

My late grandmother, Elsie Agnes Barber was 2 at the time of the 1921 census but she does not appear on it.  I think she was probably adopted (although she was still using Barber when she married, and had her original birth cert) and I can only assume that she is one of a handful of Elsie Agneses with different surnames that appear if I search just on the forenames and her year of birth.  A few of those have no place of birth given and I wondered if anyone knew whether it was likely she was one of those?  Her place of birth does not match any of those where that information is given, but I don't know how accurate that entry is generally likely to be.  I also assume that if she was adopted it's likely to be to a couple that had no children, so entries with multiple names, which seem to be all of them, are probably not where she was?  Or am I making a huge and incorrect assumption there?!

Another female relative is present on the 1901 and 1921 censuses but not the 1911, when she would have been about 19.  Were there not penalties for missing the census, or is it more likely to be an error in processing?

With the 1939 register I assume my dad, who would have been a baby, won't be on it because he's still alive, but his parents (Frederick and Violet Kerslake, Hillside Bungalow, Millbrook, Cornwall) are.  I'm struggling to find a way to access the actual record without having to increase my Findmypast subscription, having already been annoyed to discover I still have to pay the same for the 1921 census records - though at least partly my fault for not reading the small print properly  :'(

Any advice gratefully received
thank you

London and Middlesex / Elsie Agnes Barber b 1919
« on: Wednesday 19 January 22 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
with the 1921 census I hoped to be able at long last to make progress in discovering more about my late grandmother.  She was born in a "mother and baby" home because her mother (Mabel Agnes Barber) wasn't married.  While she was alive she wouldn't discuss her childhood - sounded as if it was pretty miserable - and I assumed she had been adopted, but she always gave her maiden name as Barber and that is what was on her marriage cert.

My main interest is in trying to find her father, and I thought there was a possibility she had been taken in by his family.  Mabel married Thomas Henry Osborne in 1920 and in the 1921 census Elsie is neither with Mabel nor her maternal grandparents.  I also tried searching just for Elsie Agnes without a surname, but that didn't turn up anything useful either.  I tried to track down any records from the mother and baby home some years ago, but had no luck.

I've also been unable to find a death record for her half-sibling Irene Mabel Osborne b 1921, who I think married a Leslie Weaving when she was around 50 (I have found the death records for the other two Osborne/Barber offspring).

If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be pleased to hear them - I'm happy to supply other information if helpful.

thanks,
Lisa
