Armed Forces / British Army Service Records
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all.

After many years of searching, and a lot of help from others, I have at last found the Discharge Record of William Woodruff in 9 Oct 1873 in Ireland. Not appeared before.

Also, would he have been signed up in Ireland with him being discharged there, not Bombay.

Now I am wondering if anyone can tell me info on his entry into this Regiment.
Buffs (East Kent Regiment) - 3rd Foot. WO121. Corporal.

I particularly wish to know as he is my great grandfather and I can find nothing about him or his parents/siblings before 1857 when he joined the HEIC in Liverpool, and was then transferred to British Army in 1859/60 in Bombay. He says on all census from 1871 that he was born in Glossop Derbyshire. He was married in Limerick Ireland.

Regards,
Margaret

Australia / William Woodruff sailed to Australia in 1905, I am looking for his death
« on: Monday 11 November 13 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
Any help need to trace this man's death.

Possibly in Australia as he sailed from Dover Kent in 1904 as a ships steward, so paid his way across. He was born 1864 in Gibraltar and lived with his wife Mary Strood until 1901 census in Dover Kent, which is where I am struggling to trace him

Mary  was housekeeper in 1911 to another man, but no sign of William.

There is a 1914 record for a  William Woodruff in Wilmot Tasmania, Could this be him.
It doesn't help me when both country or date is not shown on these Electoral rolls!

Regards,
Desperate,
Calmar :)

William was a Stoker in 1901.
Any help  would be most appreciated.

World War One / Help needed for age at death on CWGC record please
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have found this record for W Woodruff in 1916 at Malta Cemetery. I am hoping he is my gt uncle.

Can anyone tell me how I could find out his age please as other searches have not found his death. Some marriages for his children say that he is deceased by 1919.

William was born in Gibraltar to a serving soldier in the Buffs in 1864. By 1901 he was a Stoker and out of the army himself. This record is for a Stoker.

Recorded as Deceased on son's marriage certificate in 1919.    Is this his death?  WOODRUFF, W  Rank:Stoker  Service No:6081/S  Date of Death:09/12/1916  Regiment/Service:Royal Naval Reserve   H.M.S. "Vengeance"   Grave ReferenceProt. 333.  CemeteryMALTA

US Completed Requests / Robert Waite Cowham b 1889 NY
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 12:16 BST (UK)  »
I am  trying to trace the birth of Robert and his mother.

All I have is from the 1910 census in Onondago NY in 1910 and his death in 1939 in that county.
His mother is Eliza b 1864 NY married to William Tall/Tell, who was from England.

Robert is listed as step son to William and I am wondering if Eliza was married to a Cowham before this marriage to him, which would  link her to my Cowhams from Lincolnshire and who emigrated to NY.

Any help woul be appreciated.

Regards,
Margaret

I would appreciate some help regarding the above please.

Sarah Ann was born Ibbotson and married to Benjamin Hague Sept qtr 1878 in Sheffield. Benjamin died 1878 and Sarah is living in Sheffield with her mother Hannah Ibbotson and sister Annie Ibbotson in 1881. She is described as a Widower and her occupation is a Warehouse woman.

I can't find a marriage for her after 1881 or a death. I have searched the records for marriages and further census for two entries in 1882 and 1885.

If anyone has Parish records or similar and could help me with this query,  I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,
Calmar

Kent / Looking for Death of John William Woodruff AKA Wm Woodruff c 1901 onwards
« on: Tuesday 27 November 12 12:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Searches for this chap are proving negative. I can't find him after 1901 census married to Mary (Strood) and living at Cooks Cottage Dover.

He was born in Gibraltar 1864 to a serving soldier. 1st sighting in 1871 in Cheriton Kent Barracks.

In 1911 Mary is now 'Housekeeper' to  a Mr Reynolds who is a Carter and living in Temple Ewell. With her are some of her children  to William and some new ones which 1911 census indicates are children to Reynolds. One bc of a child indicates that the father's name is not known!!

Mary died in 1951 and the dc says that she is widow of Wm Woodruff Labourer. William had occupations of Soldier, navvy and ship's stoker up to 1901.

On a marriage cert in 1919 for one child it gives William as deceased.

Any help with William's death would be very very welcome!!

Kind regards,
Margaret

I have located this info for William Woodruff but cannot access it on AA. No matches showing. Does anyone know how to get results from AA cause i never can!!

I am hoping that is my gt grandfather who was with the 2nd Batt 3rd The Buffs from 1859. He married in Limerick Ireland in 1860 and his 1st son John William was born in Gibraltar in 1864. Next child was Ravina born in Dublin in 1868. Would those facts mean that this is my man!
