Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Finding Dad's Family in Hull - Sissons:
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am trying hard (have been for years now) to discover what happened to Dad's family in Hull and why he was put in Linneaus Street Children's Home along with his brother when his Mum died at 32 in 1923. I live in Harrogate, but with my eldest daughter, I have now driven to Hull many times and tried to visualise what their life was like and from what we've learned so far, pretty tough. I am listing here some names of Dad's family that I've found and some of the places in Hull the records show they lived. If anyone, has knowledge of what these places were like or better still, knows of the Sissons family, we'd be very grateful to hear from you. Dad, was killed just after my fourteenth birthday and he never spoke about his family or childhood, so we are, bit by bit, trying to piece it together.
Sissons family: Samuel  1869-1937,Mary Jane Olsen (formerly Thackray) Lived with Samuel however, both legally married to different people throughout, Samuel to Rose Lee 1874-unconfirmed, Mary Jane to Charles Wm.Olsen 1887-1931, Florence Elizabeth Sissons(Married Luben Broughton) 1895-1959, Maud 1896-1906, Rose Ellen 1899-unconfirmed, Samuel Jnr. 1903-unconfirmed. Evening everyone,  Could I ask please - Has anyone got any pictures at all of 8 Warneford Terrace, off Stanley Street, Hull in the early 1900's. My Dad was born in Hull, but orphaned and this address is given - however, I have tried everything and even driven around Hull, trying to find exactly where it was and as yet, I have had no luck. A picture would be wonderful. When I enquired at Hull History Centre, I was told that Hull C.C. took a picture of all the streets that were demolished - however, they did not bother with "Terraces". So, even though there are images of lots of the old streets, there do not seem to be any at all Warneford Terrace.

I am trying to discover what happened to my Uncle (Charles William Olsen) born in Sculcoates in 1910. His mother, my paternal Grandma was Mary Jane Olsen (formerly Thackray), born in Dublin in Ireland in 1891 and his father was also called Charles William Olsen, born around 1887. They both appear to have been from Hull families. All three appear on the 1911 census. At that time they resided at 6 1/2 Walker Square, Sykes Street. Charles was 10/12 months. Some time after that, it seems that they separated (Between 1911-1915) My father John Joseph Sissons was born in 1915 at 8 Warneford Terrace, Hull but I cannot find the whereabouts of Mary Jane's older son, Charles William Olsen who when John Joseph was born, would have been five. Any suggestions as to where we could look would be most welcome as we have exhausted all the avenues we are familiar with i.e. 1911 Census and Electoral Registers that are available to us. We have been to Carnegie, Hull History Centre and the Library but as yet, cannot place him at that time at all. We have found a Charles William Olsen born 1910, who died at seventy in 1980 but we are completely unable to verify that we have the correct Charles William Olsen. Many thanks for any advice anyone is able to give. linney2019

Ideas on where I could search please!!! I have spent so long trying to solve this puzzle, I would even consider paying a local Archivist if there is one in Hull - I am so desperate. My father, John Joseph Sissons, was born in Hull in 1915 but when he was coming up to nine, his mother, Mary Jane Olsen died at thirty-two. He was put in to Linneaus Street Children's Home by his Father, Samuel Sissons. Dad was killed when I was a little girl - too young to ask questions and he never talked about his childhood at all, nor his family. The only thing I knew for sure, was his birthday, so I got a copy of his Birth Certificate. That is how I found out the names of his Mother and Father, Mary Jane Olsen (formerly Thackray) and Samuel Sissons, both lived in Hull. I was then able to find his Mother,  Mary Jane's Death Certificate and the names of her family, she was born Mary Jane Thackray in Dublin.  The problem is that although Samuel Sissons is listed as his father, I have no details at all of Samuel's age and when I check in Hull, there is no trace of 8 Warneford Terrace - the house that was listed when he was born. Mary Jane was not married to Samuel Sissons but still married to her first husband - Charles William Olsen and I do not know what happened there, other than my Dad's birth was not registered until he was five months, where his brothers were registered straight away. Identifying Samuel is proving impossible - there seems to be numerous Samuel Sissons in Hull. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - Thanks linney 2019
