Wiltshire Lookup Requests / lived in Wiltshire gaoled in Somerset Why??
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 20:43 GMT (UK)  »

HiRootschatters.

Many thanks for help in finding information on James Parker (b1818) Trowbridge.
I am stuck with two  major problems.
He lived in Wiltshire but was gaoled in Somerset. Why was that?

It was 1835 James was apprenticed to John Chislett as a sweep. While at the Angel Inn (probably Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire) there was a robbery. Sometime later James was charged.  (later on his way to Australia, transported for life as a covcit, the records on the 'England 2' has  the offence as stealing a coat)

Problem 2 I can find no record of a coat being stolen, and the charge keeps changing. There was only 1 James Parker/sweep/ born 1818 in the county.

At Wells 23/3/1835 the charge was 'larcent from a public place'
At Ilchester gaol 'stealing a box of 80 yards of Irish (something?) of Elizabeth Fulsell'
When he was sent to the prison hulk Leviathan at Portsmouth the record shows the charge as 'stealing to the value of 5pounds in a dwelling house'
Only on the England 2 to Australia and from then on was the charge stealing a coat.

Can anyone answer why a Wiltshire person from a supposed crime in that county be sent to Somerset?
and  Why was the charge recorded in so many different ways.
Hope someone can help.

Wiltshire / James Parker Trowbridge Wiltshire 1835 convict to Australia
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 08:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschat
Can anyone help me locate some information regarding James Parker born 1818,  (and his dad William Parker and mum)  from Trowbridge,  Wiltshire in 1835.
On the death of his mum in Trowbridge, seventeen year old James now apprenticed to Chimney sweep John Chislett, was working at the Angel Inn  (in Somertset I think).  A  robbery took place at the Angel Inn.  James Parker was found with three buttons and a bottle stopper in his pocket. Committed to Shepton Mallet gaol on 16th March 1835, and  tried at Wells Quarter sessions 23 March 1835. Found guilty and subsequently, via the county gaol on 26th March 1835, and on 14th April  1835 via the prison hulk Leviathan at Portsmouth, was on  8th June 1835, transported to Australia for life.
Later upon obtaining his ticket of leave, he was to become one of the founding fathers of Taree ,New South Wales.
I would like some help in finding out about his family members in Trowbridge. Also, how could I find any records of the charge sheet and his trial at Wells quarter sessions in March 1835?
Hope you can help

Wigtownshire / Catherine McMeekin b1809. father James McMeekin b1791in Wigtown
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 04:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Wanting info on Catherine (cathrine) McMeekin born1809 Wigtown and on 14/1/1826 married Thomas Perry(b1807)

They both left and went to Australia arriving in Oct 1841. On shipping manifest as Thomas Perry (Shepherd) and Catherine (Servant) plus 4 children, James14, Catherine12, Agnes9 and Janet7.

Question can any Rootschatter tell me if there is a church or other record of their 14/1/1826 marriage in Wigtown?

AND can any one explain why in the 1841 census returns, before they left, Thomas (now 34) was in the registration district of New Luce (ref 893/5/5), while Cathrine's registration district was Abbey.

I have a record that Cathrine's father was James McMeekin b1791 Wigtown. Could anyone confirm this?
Thank you in advance. Any information much appreciated
Ken

The Common Room / family research in Australia

Hi family researchers. One of the most useful resources to track down Australian birth/weddings/death announcements is Trove from National Library of Australia (trove.nla.gov.au) All newspapers/gazettes in the country from earliest settlement in 1788 are digitised. This is a free service. Also maps diaries, journals, letters. etc. regards K Doyle

The Common Room / Doyles in Wicklow
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 02:36 BST (UK)  »
From many posts it seems like there were/are many Doyles in that part of Ireland.

Andrew (b 29/11/1774) and his brother James was sent as a convict (along with his wife and 3 children including Cyrus Matthew) to Australia, in 1803. It was his son  Cyrus Matthew who after marrying Frances Bigger daughter of a local farmer(Oct 1814) is said to have lived in the home he built on the Hawkesbury river called "Ulinbawn".

According to a newspaper record of 'The Hawkesbury Doyles' Cyrus Matthew named it 'Ulinbawn' after the old Wicklow home of the family.

Question is there a Ulinbawn in Wicklow? Is it a village or would a farm so named in the late 1700's still exist?

Can anyone shed any light on this? Hear from you. K Doyle Canberra, Australia
