Lancashire / Robert Lomas ltd. draper
« on: Sunday 21 May 23 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Has any one got any information about Robert Lomas ltd. a drapers shop on Oldham st in Manchester. I have an ancestor working as a shop assistant in 1921. I was wondering about the business in a general sort of way. Was it a big business, successful, other employees?

Lancashire / Turton / Stafford marriage
« on: Wednesday 10 May 23 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Duplicate of Cheshire message.
I have a marriage between William Turton and Beatrice Stafford in 1925 Stockport. Sadly Beatrice died soon afterwards and we know almost nothing about her. I would like to find further information about the Stafford family, including present day members who may be interested in their family history.

Cheshire / Stafford family in Cheshire

I'm researching this Stafford family from Hyde/Bredbury/Stockport:
Arthur Stafford born 1866. wife Elizabeth Stafford born 1864 (nee Knowles). Daughter Sarah Ann Stafford born 1890, Beatrice Stafford born 1901. There seem to be a few related family trees on Ancestry but I cannot access the people who created them. My connection is to Beatrice and the rather sad story about to her.

Armed Forces Resources / Hellens Manor
« on: Monday 11 November 19 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the military history of Hubert Ernest De Burgh born 1889. I have a record card for him showing his discharge from the Argyl and Sutherland highlanders regt. on 7/6/18. The card shows disabilities:GSH (orW?) Rt leg (amp) and an address of Hellens much markle nr Ledbury.
Does anyone have any experience of reading these cards? I presume that the Hubert had all or part of his right leg amputated, what does GSH mean? I presume that Hellens means Hellens manor which stands today, but may have been used as a hospital for army veterans. Does anyone know of any records on this establishment?
Hubert seems to have had two service postings as he is also listed as in the AVC, which I think is the Army Veterinary Corps. Would a soldier have normally transferred between posts?

Family History Beginners Board / Nash family in Southport lancashire
« on: Saturday 17 August 19 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I am rather stumped as to how to research this Nash family as I have almost no information on them from living relatives. I have a birth certificate for Joyce Annette (Nash), born 1926, born at 5 Lathom Rd. fathers name and occupation is blank as I expected. Name of mother: Eva Nash of 143 Princess Road Moss Side Manchester. Signature , description and res of informant: Eva Nash mother 5 Latham Road Southport. At the end of the row the superintendent registrar has written 'Adopted' as I expected. I presume that once Eva fell pregnant, she left Manchester to stay with her mother, Eva, in Southport, where she gave birth and put the child up for adoption. There do seem to be a lot of Eva Nashs from birth and census records, but none that I can pick out as obvious family. I know quite a lot about Joyce Annette's adoptive family (Prices). Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Family History Beginners Board / Annetts of south Wales
« on: Thursday 15 August 19 16:54 BST (UK)  »
I'm tracing a Price family from Llanbedr in south Wales.  I have a Rosina May Annetts born 1894 marrying a Thomas Price in 1916 Reg Merthyr T. They appear on the 1939 register living at the Red Lion Inn Llanbedr along with two redacted people (I presume my mother in law and her sister Irene). The family only knew about Irene (Reene, mother's name recorded as Annetta), but when I look up any Price child born after 1916 with a mother's name of Annetts I find a group of other people in Merthyr T who could be family, but ALL die as small children. Was there some terrible disease in the area around the 1920s? Or did the Annetts carry a gene that was fatal to boys?
