Notes on the Gerard Family from "Genealogies of An Aberdeen Family 1540-1913"
https://archive.org/details/genealogiesofabe00smit

I have pondered over who might be the parents of Alexander Gerard, a farmer, for many years and wondered if anyone has better insights.  Alexander is known to have married Janet Irvine.

I believe Alexander's parents are John Gerard, farmer Midmar and Crossley, and his first wife (unknown) and is a half-brother of Rev. John Gerard.

The Rev. John Gerard, b. 12th Sept., 1765;
m, Jane Craig (b. 1764; d. 30th Jan., 1837), sister of Peter Craig, M.D., of West Indies; d. 9th Oct., 1850. He was the son, by a second marriage, of John Gerard, Farmer, Midmar and Crossley, Fetteresso (d. Sept., 1791), and Jane Jamieson (d. 17th Aug., 1814). John Gerard's family by his first marriage consisted of:

1. Alexander, b. 1758; Jane Affleck (d. about Dec, 1833); d. 9th Sept., 1833, at Cotbank,
Glenbervie. He was a Farmer. Their family consisted of Janet and Jane.  Did he marry Janet Irvine after 1833 and before she died in 1840?  I have that in 1834 Alexander was a tenant farmer in Greenheads.
2. James, in. Sarah Blackhall (d. 17th Feb., 18 16)
:
d. March 1801. He was a Farmer, Tillyboy, Echt. Their family consisted of Margaret
(Mrs. Shewan, Skene, who had a daughter), James (d. May, 1801), and Isabel (6. April,
1 801).
3. Jane, d. 9th Sept., 1779, at Crossley, Fetteresso. By his second marriage, his family consisted of:

1. John, b. 12th Sept., 1765, of whom before and
hereafter.
2. George, d. Sept., 1832.
3. Isabella, b. 1770; m. before 1802, George
Tytler, Farmer, Milltown of Corsindae, of whom before (page 100).

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Argyllshire / Angus McLeod born about 1833 in Torosay
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if anyone has further info on Angus McLeod christened 30 April 1831 in Torosay.  Parents  Norman MacLeod and Sarah (perhaps Marrion) MacKinnon.

I have him in the 1841 census from Freecen: Roderick 20, Mary 20, Catherine 15, Robert 17, Lachlan 12, Marrion 10, and Angus 8 all McLeods at Ardahoil, Torosay.

There is an 18 year old Angus McLeod in 1851 living in Kilmore and Kilbride.

I have not found him in 1861.

Parents from:  http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/cr_deaths.html
McKinnon, Sarah   (c. 1787-1859) farmer's [Norman McLeod] wife she died 12 March 1859 at Ardachaoil, Torosay aged 72. F. Lachlan McKinnon farmer, dec. M. Mary McKinnon, M/S McKinnon dec. Info. Norman McLeod husband, present.
McLeod, Norman   [married to Sarah McKinnon] See McKinnon, Sarah (c.1787-1859), or McLeod, his wife, who died at Ardachaoil, Torosay.
McLeod, Sarah   (c.1787-1859) Farmer's wife, married, died 12 March 1859 at ArdachaoilTorosay, aged 72. F. Lachlan McKinnon farmer. M. Mary McKinnon

I believe this Angus McLeod had a child with Mary McSporran named Archibald McLeod in 1856 Killean and Kilchenzie.

I am trying to sort out the use of Angus McLeod b1823 Lochbroom, ROC
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=880538.msg7535743,
as it appears unlikely, from the information at hand, that the Angus McLeod who went to Australia with Mary McSporran and son Archibald ever lived in Lochbroom, Killearnan, or Knockbain in ROC.

Ross & Cromarty / Angus McLeod born 1823 Lochbroom
« on: Tuesday 20 February 24 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
I found Angus McLeod in the 1881 census for Tarbet, Ross-shire.  He is married to Mary Ross and they have three children with them: Rachel 1854, Murdoch 1861, and George 1868.

In looking at Lochbroom births I found an Angus born to father Allan McLeod (I believe his mother is likely Christian McLeod).

On investigation I noted two different Allans.  There is an Allan McLeod who married Christian McLeod 16 Jan 1815 and an Allan MacLeod, feuar, who married Isobel or Isabella Graham 11 Feb 1819 in Lochbroom.

I don't know if either family ever went to Australia.

The Alan used on FamilySearch.org ID M9YJ-58R
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/M9YJ-58R

is from Killearnan, ROC which is 4 miles from Beauly, which probably accounts for the Fraser mother.

Angus and Mary McLeod arrived into New South Wales  on board the
"Winifred"  on 1st November 1856 with son Archibald.

Can anyone help sort this out?

Moray (Elginshire) / Neil McLeod aged 81 in 1851 Forres census
« on: Friday 02 February 24 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Neil McLeod was apparently born in Lochbroom and is a shoemaker.  He was with wife Margaret age 80 born in Ardclach, Nairn.  Similar couple in 1841 census except Neil is 70 and his wife's name is given as Mary.  I am interested in this couple because I have family who used to live in Forres.  I have not figured out Mary or Margaret's maiden name or which Lochbroom family Neil is from.

There is a Neil McLeod in 1861 census in Inverness, Inverness.  Dead in 1861 aged 92.  I tried to figure out who the people with this Neill were Ann MacLeod aged 60 and Helen MacLeod aged 40 but it seems a red-herring.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ross & Cromarty / Charles McLeod's parents
« on: Tuesday 07 November 23 01:26 GMT (UK)  »
Having trouble deciphering this image.  Can anyone help?

Charles McLeod lived in Kincardine, Ross-shire.  It looks like John McLeod is his father and his mother Catherine McLeod.  I am not sure where they would be from as Charles was born in 1787.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've looked into the parents of William McLeod and the most likely appears to be Donald McLeod and Isobel Rule married in Alness 14 August 1812.  How common is it for baptisms to use married name for spouse eg. Isobel McLeod rather than Isobel Rule?

I found John McLeod 02/01/1814 Edderton with parents Donald McLeod and Isobel McLeod.  This might be a christening date rather than a birth date.

This introduced a new wrinkle.

Hints indicate they had a son John McLeod 745 Dunbar Road MERRIGUM, Victoria, Australia (McLeods Homestead):
Birth:   Sep 2 1813 - Kincardine, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland (I couldn't find it on Scotland's People)
Death:   Aug 24 1903 - "Valley Field," Mooropna, Victoria, Australia
Parents:   Donald Mcleod, Isobel Mcleod (born Rule)
Sister:   Margaret Ann Mcleod
Wife:   Janet Mcleod (born Ross)
Children:   Walter Mcleod, Alexander Mcleod, Isabella Thomson (born Mcleod), Donald Mcleod

This John's wife Janet was born Achnacarran which I believe is close to Loch Awe.  Are the hints likely to be correct or not?  I been trying to find more on the parents: Donald is 61 in 1851 and was born in Edderton.  His son William is 27 in 1851.  Daughter Janet is 31 born in Kincardine, ROC.   His niece is Isabella Graham.  In same location there is a John McLeod aged 29 born in Kincardine, ROC and married to Margaret McKenzie.  To me this proves the Australian John is not from the same family as William but does it prove Isobel Rule is not Isobel McLeod?  I could not find Donald McLeod's death but his son William was married to Jane (might be neighbour Janet) Ross in Logie-Easter and moved to Kilmuir-Easter.  Any help with finding Donald's death date and location would be appreciated.

Ross & Cromarty / Alexander McLeod (1802-1886) Kilmuir-Easter need help deciphering
« on: Wednesday 18 October 23 01:28 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in this Alexander McLeod of Barbarville, Kilmuir-Easter and believe his wife was Margaret Michal .  I thought potentially this could be Nichol but have seen Michal.  I haven't been able to find him or his parents Roderick McLeod crofter and Mary McLeod and would appreciate any info of them.  Unreadable is the location where he formerly lived.  I wonder if it is Rosskeen.  I have attached a clip of his death certificate which I hope does not violate copyright.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have been trying without success to find Allan MacLeod's parents via his death cert.  Unfortunately, I cannot find where he died.

Allan was born in about 1816 out of county.  He married Isabella Macdonald or Mc Donald (born about 1820) in 13 Nov 1837 in Inverness.  They had a family Margaret 23 Jul 1838, Donald 16 Mar 1840 in Inverness, John Rose 15 Apr 1842 in Dingwall, Alexander about 1845 in Dingwall, Allan about 1847 in Dingwall, Hector about 1849 in Dingwall, Ann Macaulay on 21 May 1855 in Dingwall.  Ann died in 1856 in Dingwall.  This means both parents were alive post 1855.

The 1851 census has the family except for Allan senior in Dingwall.  Isabella is noted being born in Inver, Inverness and occupation as "Painters wife abroad".

Any help would be appreciated.

Ross & Cromarty / Mary MacLeod (1806-???)
« on: Monday 31 July 23 19:30 BST (UK)  »
Mary MacLeod was born in Lochbroom and died somewhere.  I found her in the 1881 census with family members as Shandwick Farm Servts, Logie Easter, Ross and Cromarty.  She was aged 75 and a widow.

1881 census Shandwick Farm Servts, Logie Easter, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
John MacLeod 34, Mary MacLeod widow 75, Christina 42, Flora 40, Catherine McKenzie niece 15, and Hugh McKenzie nephew 13.  All these MacLeods were born in Coigach.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=37695.0

I tried to find the death cert. in Scotland's people but turned up the wrong Mary twice.

Does anyone know which death is hers?  I am trying to find the parents names of the widow of Hugh MacLeod and expect her maiden name to also be MacLeod.

Thanks for any help.
