Armed Forces / "kicked out of Ireland"
« on: Friday 03 April 20 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I need some assistance from someone who knows the history of Ireland and the IRA. My great grandfather came to the USA in 1926. When his children asked him why he came here he said he was kicked out of Ireland by the IRA. In 1926 he was only 19 years old.

I tried to Google this question in different ways and I don't get a clear answer. I guess what I'm asking is if there are known cases of the IRA kicking people out of Ireland, scaring them off, etc.

In my mind, this is just a made up story. I did not know him, maybe he was telling the truth, but it seems unlikely.

Any hints on history about this would be great. I'm not even sure where to start researching this. I know he lived in Co Roscommon on his grandmother's farm and was a laborer.

Thank you for any help or research advice!

The Common Room / Using Roots Ireland website in USA?
« on: Sunday 29 March 20 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I live in the USA and I have heard great things about the rootsireland.ie website. It seems many people in Ireland are able to use this site and many have helped me by finding records in this site.

I was wondering if any USA folks have been able to get a subscription to the site. It seems to not accept the US Dollar currency. Has anyone had success with this? Perhaps it is just my bank that will not convert the currency? I was wondering if they had a PayPal option since that has helped me in the past.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide!

« on: Thursday 12 March 20 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
Would someone be able to help me read the residence at the time of marriage? Looks like it says Arvarnah, but good 'ol Google doesn't help me. Is this in Mayo?

I am going to attempt to attach a screenshot of the document I am researching with the particular name!

The Common Room / Making a Family History Book
« on: Tuesday 10 March 20 15:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I was wondering if anyone has experience compiling, in book form, their family history research. Or does anyone run a blog/website where they share their family history? I am in the process of writing my family history into a book that I can give to my aunts and uncles but I was wondering if others have done it and what it looked like.

I have had relatives express interest in this which would mean I would add information about our cousins.

Thank you!

Armed Forces / Daniel Carlson, Battle of Midway
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather was Daniel William Carlson. He was born in Minnesota and his parents were from Finland. He had three brothers that were in the military and shortly after turning 18, he disappears and reappears in documents four years later, in 1924, when he marries in Manhattan.

It took me a while, but I found him living on the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island in 1925. His only child was born there that year. The 1925 Rhode Island census says he was a fireman on the Station.

Daniel died at the Battle of Midway on 6 June 1942. When the U.S.S. Hammann was struck by a torepdo, he was getting his shipmates off the ship, getting them life jackets, and making sure they were safe. The ship sank in less than 4 minutes and than an underwater explosion killed anyone who was in the water nearby.

Later, his wife christianed the U.S.S. Carlson, named after him. I believe this happened in Boston.

I have his military service I.D. (299-02-98) but I have not been able to find anything else about him. I was hoping the findmypast website would have some of his military documents but they do not.

Another odd thing is that his birthday was 5 Oct 1902 in Virginia, MN but if you google him, his birthday is listed as 17 April 1899 in Virginia, MN. https://www.fold3.com/page/636343524-daniel-carlson/stories

I'm starting to wonder if I somehow have the wrong man in my research since the military lists his birthday differently. I know his wife's name and children, maybe I have his parents wrong.

Does anyone have any ideas for where I could find military records on him? Am I allowed to request these documents? His only child has passed away and I don't speak to my father.

Does anyone know anything about the Torpedo Station? Was it a training facility? I'm trying to understand why he chose to go there if he was from MN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Family History Beginners Board / "Talk of the Town" Central Islip Newspaper
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I have been searching for information on my grandfather's brother who died of polio on 19 May 1961. He was born in Sept 1930 and was named Roger John O'Gara. His parents were Roger James O'Gara and Mary Veronica O'Neill O'Gara. They all lived in Central Islip and worked at the Central Islip Hospital as well. My mother says that there use to be a newspaper called "Talk of the Town" that was printed on Carelton Ave., which so happened to be the street the hospital was on.

I have used websites like fultonhistory.com before to look at newspapers, but I have not been able to find this particular newspaper. I was wondering if anyone has heard of it? Perhaps it was just a section or column of another newspaper? I have been trying to find Roger Jr.'s obituary for years.

I am told that he went upstate (in Lake Placid maybe) for treatment, but died at age 30. This devastated the family and I thought they would have placed an obit since he was a star basketball player at CI back in the day.

I guess my question is: how do you go about finding names of now defunct newspapers? Should I contact the local archives person of that town? Or is there a way to see a list online?

Thank you all for any assistance. I really appreciate it!

United States of America / Simon Hickey, Saratoga, NY
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 20:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

My family has been trying to find out more about Simon Hickey. He was born in Ireland around 1840 and married Anne Dwyer. By 1879 he was living in America and is said to have been a Silky Driver at the Saratoga Race Track.

He had a daughter named Mary "Beeba" Hickey who was born 17 June 1879 in New York and died in the 1970s, I believe. I know she had a sister named Bessie who was born in NY on 12 Feb 1883.

I found him in the 1900 Census which has him living at 51 Jefferson St. in Yonkers, which lines up with the information I have on his daughter. If you have access to Ancestry, here is the link to that Census: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7602/4114940_00902/68034238?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/47516869/person/6786609323/facts/citation/112636543642/edit/record

This census says he was a Rail Road Gateman. It makes me wonder if he was a silky (sulky?) driver at Saratoga Park in NYC and there is just some confusion?

Mary Hickey married Henry Thomas Carroll (b. 1873 d. 1943) and they had three children: Marion (1901-1982), Dorothy (1903-1985), and Harry Thomas (1910-2002).

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Kerry / O'Neill, John, Royal Irish Constabulary
« on: Tuesday 17 December 19 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

I am seeking some help for information on my mysterious great-great grandfather John O'Neill.

He was born on 26 April 1886 in Cloghane, County Kerry.

He joined the RIC when he was 18, so that means some male family member was also serving since I was told a person had to be 19 in order to sign up.

On 8 January 1905 he was stationed in Hollymount, Mayo and married Josephine Loughlin whose father, James, was a retired Sergeant in the RIC.

These two dates come from John's natualization records but I cannot find any documents online to support this claim. I cannot find his marriage record in the online Civil Marriage records so I don't know his father's name. And the ages for him don't line up in the 1901 census for John O'Neill's in Cloghane.

He had a brother named Edmund who lived in Claremorris. He listed his brother as his contact in Ireland when he came to the U.S. in 1920 after serving in WWI in the 3rd Royal Irish Regiment.

I was able to find his discharge papers on findmypast.com which lists his birthdate and birth location.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Has anyone found that a 15 year old was listed as a 21 year old on a census?!

Thank you all for any help you could provide!
