Monmouthshire / Help needed re Oliver Jones
« on: Monday 04 May 20 00:13 BST (UK)  »
Oliver Jones was born 20 May 1891. No idea of his parents names. He married Mary Louisa Neal on 4th Oct 1913 at Libanus Chapel. They lived at 17 High Street, Argoed. She died in 1918 and he married again to my great grandmother Susan Ellen Jones. As far as I am aware nan used to say they both met in Tredegar when he used to deliver either the milk or the coal. I know he was a collier at Gwrhay Colliery. They lived at No. 6 Gwrhay Cottage but moved to 5 Brynglas Avenue in the late 20's or early 30's. He died 16th April 1931. I know his brother and his wife used to live 'up the road' in Brynglas and I remember the wife being referred to a 'Bessie' but that's all I remember.

I know that seems a lot of information for somebody who hasn't got much information on him but I'm going on what is written down in the family bible and what cousins have said.

I have been searching for months and I found an Oliver Jones born in the same area with parents called Richard and Elizabeth but this is NOT my Oliver as far as I am aware.

Oliver and Mary had some children but after Mary died I have no idea what happened to them. Dennis, Sylvia Elizabeth and Doreen (Christine)

Thanks.

Monmouthshire / Help needed - Susan Ellen Nicholls
« on: Friday 20 March 20 08:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys,

I wonder if anybody can help. My great grandmother Susan Ellen Nicholls was born 29th March 1895 in Rhiw Lyr Daffydd to Daniel and Ada Nicholls.

Now, we've always known her birth name being Nicholls, she married David Evan's in 1913 and had Auntie Edie and then married Oliver Jones in 1919 and had Megan, Gwladys (my grandmother) and Edna.

I have started seeing records with her name being Susan Ellen Prosser. I know it's the same person as her mother and father are Nicholls and her siblings are the same.

What I want to know is why is she being referred to as Prosser? As far as we're aware she wasn't adopted but now I'm not sure.

Anybody can help?

Thanks so much.

Monmouthshire / Ada Woodward (Nicholls)
« on: Wednesday 04 March 20 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right section.

I am trying to locate any photos or documents related to my great, great grandmother Ada Nicholls.

She was born Ada (Ida) Woodward in 1865 in North Nibley, Gloucestershire. She married Daniel Nicholls in 1885 and moved to Gwrhay (could be the surrounding areas like Oakdale)

They had nine children together including my great grandmother Susan Nicholls born in 1895.

Ada died in December 1915 roughly aged 50. Unsure of cause of death but if anybody knows that would ge great.

If anybody has any photos or documents or has any more information on her I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Monmouthshire / Gwrhay Cottage
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 13:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm new here so bare with me. I am wanting to find out more about my family past starting with my mothers side of the family.

My grandmother was born near Cwrt - Y - Bella in a place called Gwrhay and I understand the cottage where she grew up was called Gwrhay cottage. There could be three different spellings 'Gurhay, Gwrhay and Gwerhay.'

Her father Oliver Jones worked in the colliery in Oakdale and her mother Susan Jones was an unpaid domestic servant often being there when people died she used to lay them out or when somebody gave birth etc.

I don't think Gwrhay exists anymore and I know the cottage doesn't anymore. If my facts are correct it was knocked down in the early to mid 30's.

We have a bible which says 'No 6 Gwrhay Cottage' and I remember my grandmother used to say it was a cottage on it's own surrounded by a bit of land.

Does anybody have any information on this? I've searched the internet but nothing seems to exist.

Thank you.
