Scotland / What help for a widow with 5 children in Scotland 1929.
« on: Thursday 26 November 20 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
My granny's first husband died in 1929 Scotland, leaving a widow and 5 young children.  Would my granny have had to rely on family to take her in?  Was there state help?  Many thanks.   ???

Stirlingshire / Where is Edward Hanley on 1861 census Scotland.
« on: Monday 16 November 20 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Edward Hanley died in 1862 in Denny, Stirlingshire of 'consumption 6mths'.  He is on the 1851 Scottish census with his family, aged 11.  He is not on the 1861 census.      Is it possible he was in a hospital?  Would he have been viewed as infectious and thus lived somewhere else?  Many thanks.  He was single when he died.

Stirlingshire / 1901 Census, Bakers Close (off Broad Street) and Stirling Street.
« on: Thursday 12 November 20 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1901 census in Denny, my great great grandmother shows up at Stirling Street as the head of the family.  Where is my grandfather Patrick I wondered.  I think I've found him at Bakers close.  The name, age, marital status, profession and country of birth are right for him.  He is listed as a border. Does this suggest they had separated?  I'm assuming these two streets are not that far from each other.

Armed Forces / Military records for 1950s and 1960s.
« on: Thursday 12 November 20 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
My late uncle was in the military (not sure which part) in the 50s or 60s.  I fo not have any information about his service.  How do I go about finding out who he served with and any records they may have?  Many thanks.
