Canada / Jane & Benjamin Bennett.
« on: Thursday 30 September 21 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Can any kind soul please help me find what happened to my Grt Grt Grandma's eldest sister? Jane Pearce was born in 1940 in Wigston (Two Steeples), Leicestershire, England. She is the eldest of 11 children of Sawyer/Woodman Henry Pearce and wife Eliza Goodwin. I have lots of information and even photographs of all the other children and their spouses and families but Jane remains a mystery. I can trace her in England in the 41, 51 and 61 census and then she goes off the radar. I had previously assumed she had died between the 61 and 71 census as I couldn't find a suitable marriage but had found a possible death entry. Every now and again as more archives have come online I have had another dabble and finally I found a marriage that I can say is 100% her. She married Benjamin Bennett on September 8th 1862 in Islington, London he was aged 20. I know it is her as one of the witnesses is one of her sisters husbands; Josiah Monk and the address given is my Pearce family's address from the 1861 census (12, Cottenham Road, Islington). I thought I had cracked it with this new info, but now I can not find them going forward. Can anyone locate them anywhere in Canada after 1862? Several of Jane's Pearce sisters emigrated to Canada but not until much later. Did perhaps Jane & Benjamin Bennett go to Canada first? Any help would be very very much appreciated.  ;D

I even tried to find Benjamin before the marriage but have had little success as I don't know where he was born. Benjamin's father is given as Giles Bennett, Rope maker (which I kind of imagined would make the Bennetts a family from a coastal location?) and Benjamin is 20 years of age in 1862. Can anyone locate them anywhere as a family after 1862? It is possible they emigrated, several of the other Pearce girls went to Canada but not until 1908 and my Canadian contacts don't have any knowledge of Jane either. Any help would be very very much appreciated.  ;D

World War One / 1/19th Battalion London Regiment information?
« on: Friday 08 August 14 21:50 BST (UK)  »
For the centenary of WW1 I am researching my Grandmothers favourite Uncle; George Herbert Hayward of the 1/19th Battalion London Regiment who died 12th july 1917. He is buried at Bailleul Cemetery, France (info I found previously through the CWGC.) I have spent a thrilling afternoon reading the Battalion War Diaries downloaded from the National Archives which seems to suggest he may have died of wounds received in the trenches at Battlewood on 11th July. From scouring the internet this seems to be an area near Hill 60 at Zillebeke, Belgium. (I knew none of this this morning!) I've been looking for further info and have come across two different regimental numbers for him (or perhaps there were two George Herbert Haywards in the 19th London!) From his grave I have 613240 and from a medal Roll Index card I found 613050. This is my first dable into Military records, can anyone with more knowledge of the London Regiment help me find anything more or solve the two regimental number mystery? Thank you.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / James Conrad Flood 1865
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi rootschatters, I've been asked by a family member to research her grandfather James Conrad Flood (b; Jun (qtr) 1865 W. London) but I no longer have an ancestry subscription so was wondering if you kind people would take a look at the 1871, 81 & 91 census's for him. All I know is that he was born 1865 as above and died in Watford in 1894. I also found a marriage date of 1888 in Chelsea to either an Ellen or a Lucilla Sarah. He was a publican in the Rickmansworth/Watford area around 1890 and had a son also named James. Any help would be gratefully received.
Regards

Would any of you kind & gifted souls please crop & soften the edges (is that called feathering?) of my sons playgroup photo. I am planning to give it as a prezzie to his grandparents but I dont like the bottom half of the photo with the giraffe. The frame has an oval aperture 4"x6" and ideally I'd like head & shoulders. Many thanks in advance.  :)

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / St Michaels? Where?
« on: Tuesday 26 June 07 17:23 BST (UK)  »
On the 1851 census one of my 3x GRt Grandfathers birthplace is given as St Michael, Hampshire, born 1799.
He and his family lived in Portsea and from the census he will have been a sailor as he is a Greenwich pensioner. Does any local Hampshire bod have any idea where St Michael would have been or indeed still is, is it maybe a parish in Portsmouth or another place altogether?  I am struggling to understand or find anything conclusive that pin points where it is/was.
His wife is from Liss and they married at St Thomas's Portsmouth if that helps at all :-\
Cheers

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / My Grandad and Grt Grandad.
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 23:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello again to all you talented photo restoration peeps, sadly no glamorous Romanian parents in law today :( this one is maybe only the second known, and before today, totally unknown to me, photo of my Grandad who sadly died 27 years before I was born. My Aunt unexpectedly produced it for me today and then very kindly handed it over to my care  (how happy am I :)) sadly it is a little the worse for wear, well it would probably have been the only snapshot my Aunt had of her Dad (my dad has the other 1!) who died when she was just 1, so it is quite precious.
My Grandad is the one in the middle with his dad to the left of him and I think one of his brothers to his right.
Will you kind souls have a go at mending the creases and perhaps brighten it up a little so we can see their faces a little clearer? I would love to thank my Aunt by sending her a restored copy which I am sure she would love. Thank you so much in anticipation.

The Lighter Side / Disappearing Britain
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 11:15 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if this is a new series but the episode shown yesterday on History channel with Sarah Lancashire was a very warm look at the annual seaside holiday with some fabulous old footage of Blackpool and Wales in the early 1900's and the Lancashire Mill towns. It appears there were 2 more programmes made and I would definitely look out for them if they are as nicely made as the first  :).
