Australia / Vernon Industrial School information help
« on: Tuesday 30 April 19 05:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,
I am looking for information on what happened to the children of Esther TAYLOR and George CREIGHTON from Coonamble NSW.

It would appear that the sons- Charles Richard born 1884 and George Hector born 1877- were both admitted to the Vernon Industrial School in June 1888.

How do I find out why they were admitted there, how long they were there for and what happened to them after that?

I think....they went there as they had been abandoned by their parents, which if correct, means I am also looking for 3 sisters and what became of them at that time also.....any ideas please?

Many thanks everyone!

Other Countries / British in India circa 1850-1860's
« on: Tuesday 30 April 19 05:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am hoping for some help as I have no idea where to even start...

I have 2 records pertaining to British in India, and would like to know how to find out more.

I have a marriage from the British India Office records of a James Mottlee aged 25, Master of the Indian Navy in Bombay, marrying 15 year old Margaret Burke in 1856.

I have a baptism of a Henry Mottlee in 1864- he is listed as being a Private in HM 95th Reg as a medic at 95th Reg(iment) hospital, Camp Aden, Bombay. Record says born 1837.

How do I find out more about these 2 men?? How they came to India, how long they were there for, where they went, family members, movements etc????

Any assistance would be gratefully received as I have no idea where to look next, and these 2 records were the only ones relating to these 2 men on FindMyPast.

Thank you!

Hi
Hoping someone can help connect the dots for me here!!

I have a William Mottlee- Painter- born around 1805 place unknown who lived and died in London. I can find no evidence of his parents from his marriage or death- although a witness to his marriage in 1822 was an A. Mottlee

In the same area of London I have found a John Thomas Mottlee- dairyman- born around 1800 who according to his marriage in 1838, is the son of John Thomas Mottlee - Breeches maker- and his wife Ann, of Peterborough, Northamptonshire. I have also found John Snr and Ann listed on a trade register taking an apprentice in 1798.

I am looking for a baptism of both John Thomas Jnr and William around 1800-1805, and a marriage of John Thomas Mottlee Snr to Ann around 1797-8 (I think) in the Peterborough area.

I am making the assumption- and hoping to find proof one way or the other- that William is a brother to John Thomas Mottlee Jnr, and that they were born in Peterborough and then moved (with their parents? or as adults) to London...

Records are generally spelt MOTTLEE, but very occasionally MOTTLEY

Hoping someone can help with some missing pieces please!!
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Court of Chancery?? 1891 inheritance claim...
« on: Friday 19 February 16 02:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am trying to find out if Court of Chancery records exist- and if they do, where and how I can access them??

I am trying to get to the bottom of a riddle regarding a family inheritance that was apparently claimed by Henry MOTTLEE- spouse of Elizabeth Anna nee GRIFFIN in the Court of Chancery in 1891. According to the newspaper articles in Australia, the inheritance was from an ancestor of Elizabeths, and had to be claimed by Henry ( as her spouse) in person at the Court of Chancery by August 30th 1891- the inheritance was 17000 pounds.

However, depending on which newspaper article you read, there are differing stories as to who the money actually came from (ie which ancestor of Elizabeths) and who the other eligible claimants were (she had 2 sisters- Mary Ann and Louisa and a brother Augustus).

I have found a record of Henry boarding a ship in Australia to return to England- presumably to claim the money but no other evidence or information regarding the claim.

I would really like to find out the full story!!

So if anyone can help at all to shed any light or point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful- thanks so much

Cambridgeshire / Ann & John Thomas Mottlee of Peterborough 1796- Breeches maker
« on: Friday 19 February 16 02:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone help me please with info, direction, advice??!!

I am trying to trace a couple- Ann and John Thomas MOTTLEE of Peterborough.

I know they were there in Jan 1796 as they appear in a register of apprentices- taking on Francis Welder as an apprentice with their trade listed as Breeches maker. Interestingly they both appear as the qualified trader.....was that unusual for a woman??

However, I do not know their ages at that point, when they married or their children (although I have found 2 possible sons residing in London- Chelsea- in the 1820's: John Thomas Mottlee a Dairyman and William Mottlee a painter).

If anyone can help with a marriage for this couple, any other apprenticeship or trade records, childrens baptisms, or info on why the family might have moved to London (or if it was just the son's seeking their fortunes in the big city??) I would really appreciate any help at all!!

Thanks so much

Hi
Does anyone have access to early Manchester newspapers?

I am trying to get a copy of an article from Saturday march 11 1905- page 18- of the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser.

Article entitled 'Romance of a Fortune'.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it! I don't have a British Newspapers Archive subscription.

Norfolk / John & Susannah Wyborough- children of Mary Wyborough in 1806
« on: Tuesday 12 May 15 02:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a will dated 1806 of a Joseph Wilkin and in it he mentions numerous relations to whom he leaves legacies, which has been wonderful for working out the family!!

But there is one mention that remains elusive to me, so I am hoping someone can help?

He mentions "John and Susannah, the children of Mary Wyborough, my mothers sister'.

I don't know where they live, their ages etc.

Joseph Wilkin's mother was Martha Wilkin, and he was born in Cambridgeshire about 1739, but seems to have spent his adult life in Norfolk.

I don't know Martha's maiden name- she married a Simon Wilkin around 1734 and they had 2 children- Joseph and Simon. Simon the elder appears to have died around 1739 and Martha then remarried to a William Kidman in 1743.

But it would seem from the will, that Martha had a sister Mary who married a Mr Wyborough and had 2 children, so it would seem likely these children were born around the same time as Joseph I would think??? So the 1730's-40's

Can anyone help me find out who Mary Wyborough nee unknown, and her children were and how they fit into my family tree??!!

THanks
Kylie

Hi
I am trying to trace a Thomas Hawkins- widow and Vinter, who married 19 year old Sarah Dailley on 15 Nov 1738.

I have found a marriage allegation with Sarah's father Samuel giving permission for the marriage, and Thomas seemingly applying for a licence for the marriage to take place at either St Pauls in Covent Garden or the Church of St Martin in the Fields.

I have not found an actual marriage entry??

Thomas is apparently from St Giles in the Fields, and Sarah from St Martin in the Fields.

I cannot seem to find Thomas's earlier marriage and his first wife's death- to determine his actual age.

I cannot find any trace of any children to this couple in London- but there is a possible match to them in Norfolk from 1744.....but nothing in between, and nothing to confirm the family in Norfolk is the same couple.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful!!
Kylie
