Lancashire / Isaac Wilcockson of Preston
« on: Friday 16 November 12 08:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have researched Isaac born 1783.
The only thing I am missing is where was Isaac and his wife Amelia in the 1841 census.
Can anyone find them for me?
I have found the street in Preston where their house was in 1841 and they do not appear to be there.
I have also checked Amelia's family (Senols) as far as I am aware - they lived in London.
They had no children.
Isaac ran the Preston Chronicle newspaper.
In 1851 and 1861 they are at home in Ribblesdale Place, Preston.

thanks

Technical Help / advice please
« on: Monday 03 May 10 09:25 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can offer me advice. My son (who has special needs but wanting to be independent) has given out personal details in reply to a false email - his name, date of birth, email address and password, no bank details. He now has loads of 'failed' messages in his inbox. I am very scared of computers. What should we do? What could they do with this information?

any advice very welcome.

Lancashire / Manchester Royal Exchange
« on: Friday 22 January 10 07:54 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to find out what the job of a porter at the Exchange would have involved about the time 1809-1820. Does anyone know if there are any books or other sources which could tell me? I have the dates for the building and descriptions of the dealers from Victorian times but this is obviously before this time. Also would like to know what the difference is between a porter and a warehouseman.
Any suggestions most welcome.
Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / The National Archives.uk website.

What has happened to this site? Everything has changed. I am lost. Why do they have to change everything? I cannot find the links to their partner sites. A search seems much more complicated.

Technical Help / virgin beginners help please
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 18:55 BST (UK)  »
I am very very afraid of computers. My daughter complained so much about my dial up connection being so slow that I felt compelled to take the plunge. She persuaded me to go with Virgin which came today but she has disappeared off to London and left me to it. Now I can't remember what the installation man said about switching it off at night. I am used to switching everything off and disconnecting all plugs at night can I do this with the Virgin modem? can I unplug the virgin box too? (I have left the wireless router still wrapped up she can sort that out when she comes home)

They gave me an instruction booklet for the TV but nothing for the internet.

Too frightened at the moment to enjoy broadband and too scared to do any family history......

many thanks for any help.

Lancashire / Manchester Central Library
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what is happening to Manchester Central Library? I went today and got such a shock, I know they are looking to do repairs to the building but this was a suggestion that it would be used as an opportunity to do something about the 'stack' system. Books not kept out on shelves are stored downstairs but you can ask to see them. An opportunity to get rid of the expense of keeping this archive? Last year I found a gem of a book there - out of print, not been read for many years. Old books are not on the computer catalogue for the library you have to go through a card catalogue. Is anyone raising this issue? This is a fantastic resource available to all, and once lost would be irreplaceable.

I really really hope this is just a rumour can someone put my mind at rest.

Lancashire / Book recommendation: The Gangs of Manchester
« on: Thursday 30 October 08 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
I do not usually read crime books, and I just happened to see this book in the library. As I am interested in Salford I thought I would try it. I think it should be called the Gangs of Manchester and Salford. Well I am really enjoying reading it. It is by Andrew Davies and published 2008.

The book begins in the early 1800s and traces the development of gang culture. It has explained to me about the different areas. It is also very topical as it is about children and young people fighting (including knives) and the reaction of society. The relationship between the police and the public is described. Much background information is included. I am about half way through and so far I do not think Mr. Davies has glamorized the violence (which is what I was wary of). In fact I think I will be buying this for my bookshelf.

The Lighter Side / Online parish clerks
« on: Wednesday 02 July 08 07:24 BST (UK)  »
After spending two hours in front of a very faint difficult to read film of baptisms, I would like to thank all those "Online parish clerks" who must spend hours transcibing records.

Thank you from

Quaker Family History / Quaker marriage.
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 18:02 BST (UK)  »
I found a Quaker marriage today,it is from 1777. There is a list of people (over 30 various surnames) who were present and it says above this list Relations. Could anyone please tell me if this means they are related to the bride and groom. Can I assume they were all Quakers.

Thank you.
Little Wren.
