US Resources & Offers / Wilmot Family book free to a good home
« on: Saturday 03 June 17 00:12 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of Wilmot Family: Some of the descendants of Benjamin Wilmot and Ann (Ladd) Wilmot by Beverley (Helberg) Hull. I'm downsizing and moving and can't justify keeping this enormous tome any longer. If anyone can use it, I'll be glad to donate it for the cost of postage. Reply direct to (*)

One Name Studies: T to Z / VanBuskirk (Van Buskirk) family book
« on: Friday 02 June 17 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I am downsizing, and need to dispose of my two Van Buskirk volumes by Irene Shoemaker. They were published in 1990 but based on work done in the 1950s. A bit dated, perhaps, but still, I think, the definitive history of the VB family.

They're heavy, but I'd be glad to split the costs of mailing. Contact me directly at maryvb47@gmail.com.

Armed Forces / Robert Beattie of the 91st Argyllshire Regiment
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 00:31 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down info on my husband's great grandfather, Robert Beattie. He was born about 1809 in Scotland, and his wife Mary Ann Moffatt was born about 1820, also in Scotland. I have not been able to find a record of either of these births, or their marriage. Their children were born 1838 in Scotland, 1840 in Ireland, 1843 at Parkhurst Barracks, IOW, where Robert was a Staff Sergeant in the 91st Regiment (birth certificate), and from 1849 on in Essex. He appears to have resigned from the army about 1848 and joined the Essex Constabulary and the West Essex Militia, and he died in Essex in 1858 (death certificate).

Since the 91st Regiment was raised in Argyll, perhaps Robert came from there. How can I find out when and where he joined, and where he served, from 1838 or so until 1848? Ideally, some military record might tell me when and where he was born and maybe the name of his father. How can I obtain this information?

Any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Eliza Beattie was born on the Isle of Wight 1Q 1843 and I believe baptized 22 Jan 1843 at St John's Carisbrooke. I would like to find the name of her mother. Her father was Robert Beattie, and her mother was either Mary Ann Moffitt, or Elizabeth.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Inverness / Campbell Family from Eigg
« on: Monday 16 April 12 17:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for more info about the Campbell family of Eigg, Inverness-shire. They were Roman Catholic, and I believe a large number of Catholic residents of Eigg emigrated to Canada  in 1790 on the British Queen, including our ancestor Lachlan Campbell and his family. I have also been told that Lachlan's parents may have been Angus and Marion Campbell. Looking for more info on this family. A website suggests there wereno parochial records kept on Eigg. Are there any other sources?

Armed Forces / Thomas White son of James White, RA
« on: Wednesday 14 December 11 02:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace an ancestor, Thomas White, son of James White and Sarah Talmadge, born around 1787. All his siblings were christened in Andover, Hants, but he does not appear there or anywhere else in England that I can discover. A relative suggested that James was in the Royal Artillery in Canada at that time, and he might have been born there. My quesetion is, would an officer serving in Canada have taken his family with him? How does one access records of the RA in the 1780s -- that would be around the time of the American Revolution.

Any insights welcome.

Ann(e) Fraser b 1802 in Inverness, married Robert Munro 12 Mar 1822 in Urquhart and Logie Wester, Ross and Cromarty. He was apparently from Jamaica. I am told they "had issue" but she must have died around 1830 as her parents named a younger sister Ann in 1830. I am interested in any info on Robert Munro and the children if they survived.
Source: Major Alpin's Ancestors and Descendents, Aberdeen 1906 (?)

I am trying go track down all the descendents of her parents, John Fraser (abt 1771-1860) and Helen Grant (1783-1842.

Any assistance gratefully accepted.

Other Countries / William Samuel Fitch d Simla India c1917
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 02:12 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for more information on is my father-in-law's uncle William Samuel Fitch, b 1875 in Chelmsford, s/o George Fitch and Emily Beattie. The Indian Army Quarterly List for 1 Jan 1912 indicates that he joined the army 15 Aug 1905 and was on the India Miscellaneous List, in the Survey of India Dept, Simla. The London Gazette 18 Feb 1919 announces a promotion but says he was deceased 1st Jan 1918.

Is it possible to find our more of what he did in India, exactly when he died, and where he is buried. I cannot find many sources for the Indian Army. Also any indication of whether he married while in India?
