Hi Rootschaters,

Could anyone please date this photo. It may be of my Hawkes family - Richard Neville Nettles Hawkes senior (died 1900), his wife Jean Hawkes, nee Black (died 1919) and nine of their children. It was possibly taken in Dunedin or South Canterbury, New Zealand between 1890 and 1918. There were family deaths in 1900, 1904, 1907 and 1917 which may be the reason for the black armband (on the man who may be my great-grandfather).

Thanks for your help,

Sue

Occupation Interests / midshipman Resolute 1851 - career path and leaving ships
« on: Sunday 16 April 23 01:14 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootschat,

My great-great grandfather, Richard Neville Nettles Hawkes, was a midshipman aboard the Resolute in 1851, (Advertising (1851, November 7). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 1. Retrieved April 16, 2023, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12931874).

Would he have been able to leave the Resolute (not a naval ship at that stage) in Sydney or would he have been bound to a certain length of service? By the 21st November 1856 he was a miner in Tarrangower, Victoria, Australia.

Would his ship been counted as Merchant Navy?

There is a family story that "he was an officer in the Royal Navy and resigned his commission to join the goldrush in Australia." I have checked merchant navy sources on ancestry, FamilySearch and Findmypast with no luck (not many sources go back as far as 1851).

Thank you,

Sue

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Baptism of Joseph Dickinson born between 1760 and 1792
« on: Saturday 11 September 21 05:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi rootschatters,

I am trying to find the baptism of Joseph Dickinson. He was born by the 3 April 1791, when his mother was buried.  His parents, Hugh Dickinson and Mary Ealand were married on the 5th July 1763 at Revesby, Lincolnshire.

I have checked FamilySearch, FreeReg, Ancestry and Findmypast giving a  date range from1760 to 1791.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Where would I find an original image of this marriage? I am hoping to see Kervin's signature so that I can link him with a Kervin Wright in Shropshire.

Here is the record from FamilySearch but the film no only links to a printed transcript. I can't find anything in the FamilySearch wiki or catalogue that mentions the original registers.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Words on will of John Wilson, 1801
« on: Thursday 28 January 21 04:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Could someone please help me decipher this section of the will attached? It looks like it mentions a premarital settlement but I can't read it clearly enough to read names or clues to ann's maiden name other than John Wilson, Ann, Isaac Hillier and John Barry. They married in 1775 or 1776 and he died in 1801. Here is the source : Ancestry.com. England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013.

Thanks for your help,

Sue

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Meaning of abbreviation

Hi rootschatters,

Could someone please tell me what the words "die[?] in R.J[?] " mean in the attached snip? I am not sure if the word is die or died or that the "J" is a "j". It is from a deaths register in Edinburgh.

Thanks,

Sue

Hi Rootschatters,

Could someone decipher this on 2 Aug 1853 in The Argus on  Trove: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4795270?searchTerm=%22James%20black%22%20eaglehawk&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc#    or maybe have access to look it up. Clipping attached.

I can read up until "anxiously requested" I know at least one of their children came out from Scotland after them so would love to decipher it in case it is one of their children.

Thanks,

Sue

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where the place name Hill is in North Wingfield parish? My ancestor John Fretwell Bramley's parents were living there when he was christened in 1777. There were also baptisms of the two daughters of John and Ann Fretwell of Hill in 1759 and 1763 (John Fretwell Bramley's mother Mary was the 1759 one).

Thanks,

Sue
