South Africa / Rhodesian Relatives
« on: Friday 30 November 07 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone give me some advice on tracing family members who 'emigrated' to Southern Rhodesia.  Not sure if they remained UK citizens or if they became Rhodesian.

One family I am interested in has the surname Edwards, and they were in Bulawayo in the mid 1960's.  A daughter was born there and I think the father died there.  The mother returned to UK and died here in 2004.

Also, another family member's marriage ended in divorce during the late 1960s, having married in the UK. I think at the time they lived in Kitwe, Zambia (Northern Rhodesia ?).  She later re-married, I think in Rhodesia, but then moved with her husband's job to Namibia and South Africa.

I have seen the various comments about searching the South African archives, but what, if anything is available for Rhodesia/Zambia/Zimbabwe

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Place Look up 1915 please
« on: Tuesday 24 April 07 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have a copy of an ancestor's marriage certificate but cannot identify their address.

I interpret the handwritting as "80 Servell Road".  This is the address of the bride, and the marriage took place at the parish church of St George the Martyr, Southwark, on 19th Dec 1915.

Can anyone identify where this is?

The bride's father and family have a history of living in Southwark area 1881-1901 census records, although the bride was actually born in Brewery Road, Islington in 1896

Armed Forces / Army Pensioner
« on: Wednesday 07 March 07 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Is it possible (or even worthwhile attempting  ??? ) to find army record details on the basis of name, date and place of birth only.

I have census records of individual in 1841 & 1851 who disappears from view until 1881 when he is shown as an "Army Pensioner".

Is there any hope of being able track his regiment?.  If so where do I start?

Somerset / Matthews's Complete Bristol Directory
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 13:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I have just found a reference to the above on Ancestry.co.uk

i.e. Matthews's Complete Bristol Directory, for the year 1798, [1798], MATTHEWS, William. Bristol
Printed and Sold by W. Matthews, 62, Broad-Mead

The ancestry reference was returned on a search for the name "John Brinton" and Matthews has him as the inn keeper of the Waggon and Horses, West Street Bedminster.

I have a John Brinton b. abt 1777, married to Mary, with a son Thomas, b. Bedminster 6 March 1799.   Are these one and the same? Or perhaps father and son?

Please does anyone have any further information?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / ISLINGTON Brass Founders
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Guys and Gals!  :)

I am looking of information on brass founders in 1830-1870 in Islington and Hoxton.

I am not asking for census lookups, but rather background info'.

I get the impression that brassfounders had a pretty miserable existance, rather like the spinners and weavers associated with the Lancashire textile mills.

There's a pretty dire description on one particular family at:-

http://www.phancocks.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/familyhistory/bentley/bentley.htm

However, just as there were mill owners, there had to be people who organised the brass founding trade and its that that I want to find information on.

Some of my ancestors are described as Braziers, brass founders and brass finishers.  Some are described as day labourers (journeymen), but others are not quite so clear.  Also, some of the families seem to employ two or three servants, but then the daughters of the family seem to be described as 'Laundrys'.

So what I am trying to establish is whether small groups of men set themselves up as brass founders, rather like glorified blacksmiths, or whether there was some overlord who set up factories and employed all and sundry to do the work.

When I first started looking I found several families with the name BRINTON, all associated with brass founding in the Hoxton area.  I now think that many of them were related.  In 1841, there was a William DAVIS who lived at Greenmans Lane, Islington, described as a Brazier.  At the same address was Robert BRINTON, whose father, John BRINTON, was described both as a "Gentleman" in his son's marriage certificate and as a "Brazier (Journeyman)" in his wife's death certificate.  These two descriptions don't sound compatible, but who knows?

Robert BRINTON was described as a "Labourer" in the 1841 census, as were two of his sons living at the same address, but by 1847 he is described as a "Brass Founder (journeyman)" in his marriage certificate.  Following the family through the census records, the two sons listed as labourers also became brass founders, one them, William BRINTON married the daughter of William DAVIS, continued to live at the Greenmans Lane address and in 1861 appears to employ three servants.  However, by 1871, William is living elsewhere and is described as a labourer while his wife is taking in washing.

So does anyone have any local knowledge of Islington, particuarly Greemans Lane (or Green Mans Lane).  Was there a brass foundry there? Was it a cottage industry? Or was it just a residence and everyone flocked to the local factory when the whistle blew?

I would be very intersted in any information any of you might have.

Sorry it rather a long post  >:(  :o

TIA

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Pigots 1839 Lookup
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Holly,

I noticed your post.  Do you still have book?

I am interested in brassfounders?.

Is this trade listed, or brazier, brass finisher, etc.?

I am particularly interested in the Islington area and also Hoxton if this is listed specifically.  I am also interested in the Names 'BRINTON' (or maybe BRENTON) and 'DAVIS'.

I am aware of at least three BRINTON families in Hoxton who were described in cencsus returns as brass founders later in 1850-1860, but I do not know if they were in business on their own account or if they were simply day labourers.

I would be interested in any info you might be able to find.

TIA

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / City of London Burial - BRINTON
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 21:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jane, and anyone else who can help.

I am looking for Burial/Death Records for BRINTON pre 1841.

I am particularly interested in the following:-

Mary BRINTON;  wife of John Brinton probably died between 1810 & 1819.  John and Mary probably originate in the Bristol area, were married about 1798 and had two sons born in Bedminster, Som. 1799 & 1803.  There is the possibility of a daughter b. 1810 name unknown.  John re-married in 1819 in a London church, so there's possibly a 50-50 chance that they moved to London before she died.

John BRINTON; husband of the above, re-married Rachel Porter at Christ Church,  Newgate in 1819.  He is missing from the 1841 census, although he 2nd wife Rachel is found in Liberty of the Rolls.  He is recorded as deceased in his son's marriage certificate of 1847.  Occupation according to 2nd wife's death cert. is Brazier.  Possible areas of residence: Islington (Greenmans Lane?), Hoxton, Liberty of the Rolls.

Ruth BRINTON (nee Fudge); wife of Robert Brinton (son of John above), m. 1822 in Bedminster, Som. she is missing from 1841 census, presumed dead.  Robert and Ruth had 4 sons, 2 born in Bedminster, 2 in St Luke's, Mdx in 1826 & 1829.  These two later boys were each about 8 years old when christened (1834 & 1838) at St Giles, Cripplegate; so the fact that Ruth is mention as the mother may not indicate that she was living at the time of the christening.  Robert re-married 06/04/1847 at St John the Baptist, Hoxton and at the time was living in Aske St., Hoxton.  In 1841 he was living at Greenman's Lane, Islington with 3 of his 4 sons.

Also if anyone has records after 1853:

Rachel BRINTON, 2nd wife of John above, d. 12/09/1859 in St. Geo. Southwark

Robert Brinton, son of John above. d. 25/02/1857 in St Olave, Southwark.

If its any help, Robert's son, Robert Henry BRINTON (1847-1894) also d. St Olave, Southwark, was buried at Manor Park Cemetery, as were two of his children Frederick Robert BRINTON (aged 1 year and 22 days in 1884, St Saviour) and Rosalie Harriet BRINTON (Rose, aged 7 in 1901, Camberwell)

I would be interested in any information relating to any Brinton's in the Islington or Hoxton areas, especially if there occupation is recorded as brazier or brass founder.

Here's hoping, TIA

Vic.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1847 Shoreditch Baptism - BRINTON
« on: Wednesday 13 December 06 20:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone help?

This is something of a long shot.

I am trying to trace the parents of William Brinton b. 1847_Q2: SHOREDITCH II 387.

Mother was Eliza, b.abt 1821, Bedminster, SOM; d. 1899_Q4: WESTMINSTER 1a 403.

Who was father? he appears to have died before 1881 which is the earliest census in which I have found them.

I thought if I could trace the baptism (O.K. it could have been a couple of years after the birth) I might find the fathers name.  Unfortunately I do know know the exact parish.  I guess there are several in the Shoreditch registration district.

There is a possibility that he could be the son of Thomas Brinton who in 1861 lived in the Civil Parish of St Mary, Islington, the Eccesiastical Parish of St Stephen.

As I say a long shot, but you never know.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi all,

Can any one help me with the marriage of Rachel PORTER to ?? LEWIS, probably in Bath abt. 1835.  They had a daughter Phebe (Phoebe?) born abt. 1836/7, aged 14 in the 1851 Census with birth indicated as Bath, Somerset.

By 1851 her father LEWIS had died, and her mother had re-married and she is found living with her grandmother in London.

Any help would be appreciated,
