« on: Saturday 27 October 07 15:17 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has any old London street directories (e.g. Kelly's), I would like to know who lived at 54 Mandrake Road, Upper Tooting in February 1915.

Thanks

I have learned that relevant street directories (e.g.) Kelly's and electoral registers for Upper Tooting are held at Battersea Library.

If anyone is going and is willing to help, I would like to know who lived at 54 Mandrake Road, Upper Tooting in February 1915.

thanks

The Common Room / Directories - i.e. Kelly's or similar
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can find a street/house/residents/etc directory that will include Upper Tooting in 1915?

I want to ascertain who was living with my Great grandmother in this year.

Tried that Uni of Leicester site (historicaldirectories.org), but nothing relevant.

TNA? A FHS or records office that covers Upper Tooting ? Any advice?

thanks in advance good people

Occupation Interests / Admiralty - Civil employees
« on: Friday 28 September 07 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can find Admiralty records for civil employees? I have only found records that relate to men serving on ships (TNA website, Kew). Or any other tips on the following:

The occupation of my great great grandfather Frank P Hardy on the 1901 census (Greenwich) is given as “Civil Accountant Clerk Director of Works Department Admiralty”. There is a family myth that my great grandmother (age 4 on 1901 census) grew up in Plymouth. For a number of reasons to complex to go into here, I would like to find evidence for a move of the family from Greenwich to Plymouth sometime after 1901. My assumption is that, if Frank worked for the Admiralty, it is possible that the move from Greenwich may have been for work reasons, Plymouth obviously having Admiralty connections.

Thanks

I hope someone can help me.

My Great grandmother, Grace Muriel Hardy, gave birth to my grandfather John Frederic Hardy at the above institution on 11/02/1915. He was illegitimate and quickly passed onto family freinds for 'adoption' (Maccullagh). She moved back to London within the month.

I am wondering if the above hospital would have kept records of births? and if so, where I can find?

I am wanting to find a link from Grace to the previous generation - I think I have her and her parents on the 1901 census, but to be sure, I would like to try and ascertain her age when she gave birth to John....hence my hope that a] these records were kept by the hospital (and are now archived somewhere, and b] they recored this level of detail.

I have no other docs (e.g. marriage cert) for Grace, so this is why I am trying these more peripheral sources.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

The Common Room / "adopted" grandfather - help! where next?
« on: Tuesday 24 April 07 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone has some ideas

My great grandmother Grace Muriel Hardy gave birth to my illegitimate grandfather John Frederic Hardy on 11/2/1915 at Leeds Maternity Hospital, Hyde Terrace, Leeds.

However, she gave her residence as Upper Tooting, London when registering the birth just 1 month later. I know my grandfather was quickly passed to a family (I assume freinds) in Leeds for unofficial "adoption".

We know nothing more of Grace other than that she was a "Music Hall Artist". No docs available to prove her age at this birth i.e. I have found no marriage for her after 1915 on freebmd, although I recognise that, after this date, this database is not complete....but searching GRO indices for a >1915 marriage could take forever!..and ultimately be unsuccessful.

I would like to ascertain her age at giving birth to John because I could then link her to a Grace Muriel Hardy b. 1897 Camberwell and present on 1901 census with her parents in Greenwich.

Any ideas?? I have thought to see if this Leeds maternity hospital kept some kind of records (hopefully including maternal ages!)...the hospital was demolished in the last few years I think.

The only other family rumours were that she grew up in Plymouth (but not necessarily born there) and ultimately "ended up in Israel"...by which I assume this must mean Palestine

My late grandfather had no interest at all in tracing her, so we pretty much know nothing

any ideas gratefully received
