Lancashire / Walmersley cum Shuttleworth
« on: Monday 16 July 12 14:49 BST (UK)  »
I have hit a compete brick wall at my x3 great grandfather, John Fielding. He was born about 1798 in Walmersley (near Bury). Any help about his birth/baptism/parents would be much appreciated.
He later married Hannah Mawdsley 21 May 1823 in St Mary's, Bury. Hannah was born in 1801 in either Gisburn or Keighley, Yorkshire (depending on which census you read!)

I have come to a complete brick wall with my x3 great grandfather John Fielding.
I know he was born in 1798 in Walmersley/Shuttleworth. I cannot find his parents.
He later married (21 May 1823) Hannah Mawdsley in St Mary's, Bury.
He was buried 22 Jun 1875 St John in the Wilderness, Bury.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Travelling People / Stevens
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 16:42 BST (UK)  »
I would greatly appreciate information about the Stevens family of Gloucestershire.

I'm not sure whether they were genuine gypsies or not but certainly were travellers and often described as gypsies. They were hawkers rather than showmen.

The members whom I am particularly interested in are:
Ambrose Stevens (b.1809 Chedworth- d.1894 in Monmouthshire) and his wife Susannah (b.1808, Nailsworth- d.1896 Monmouth); his father Robert Stevens (1764, Gloucestershire- 1840 (Chedworth)
and other members of the Chedworth family.

Canada / Arson in Edmonton, Alberta??
« on: Friday 09 September 11 20:33 BST (UK)  »
My grandparents (John William Fielding and Ruth Wild) emigrated to Edmonton in 1911 and married there.
My grandfather joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 but died fighting in France. I have visited his tomb there.
My grandmother returned to Britain, remarried and brought up a family of 2 children of her first husband and two with the second.

My problem is that Alberta does not seem to have data available on line and Canada is rather a long way away!

My genealogical problem is as follows:

Known information:
John William Fielding  (b.1888, Salford, Lancashire, England- died Aug 1917 Lens, France) married Ruth Wild (b,1887, Salford- died 1966, Newport, South Wales) on 14th October 1911 in Edmonton. I have the certificate.
They had two/three children (see below).
My father Harry Dean Fielding (b.10 Mar 1913 in Edmonton: I have the certificate)
Arthur Nelson Fielding (b.31 Dec 1914- I think in Edmonton but am not sure)
Unknown infant (?)- see below

Unknown:

(a). Birth details Arthur Nelson Fielding from 31/12/1914
(b). A story- unfortunately totally unsubstantiated- is that the house was burnt down by an arsonist and in a fire an infant (unknown sex) died. I do know the address in Jul 1915 was 1299 (or maybe 12929), 72nd St, Edmonton (from John William's Army Attestation record)
I would love to know if this story is true (possibly from a newspaper report) and, if so, details of the infant).
Ruth returned to England on 5 Jan 1916 from St John, New Brunswick to Plymouth on the Corinthian. With her was Dean and an unnamed infant - presumed to be Nelson (although she is listed as Mary rather than Ruth Fielding).

Monmouthshire / Dennison Harding/Thomas Fowler
« on: Wednesday 07 September 11 19:16 BST (UK)  »
I would welcome any help as to why Denison Harding suddenly changed his name to Thomas Fowler- and later back again.

Details:  Birth 1853 Q4 Kemble, Wilts.      Baptism: 4 Dec 1853 at Kemble (as Dennis Jasper Harding)
Married 1877 Q3 in Newport, Mon. to Esther Stevens (1855, Chedworth, Glos.)
(He had moved to Newport to work on railway as carpenter.)
1881 Census- living at 21, East St with wife and first child William Harding. (name Denison Harding)
1884 - birth certificate of second son Frank Jasper Harding records him as Dennis Harding BUT every John's Directory for Newport (including 1884) which I have consulted from 1882-1908 lists the Head of House at 21, East St as Thomas Fowler, carpenter.
1891 Census- 21, East St. Now listed as Thomas Fowler. Wife and 4 children listed under the name Fowler.
1901 Census. ditto.
1911 Census.- 21, Walford St, Newport. He now has the 'hybrid' name Thomas Harding. Wife and his two children still in the house have returned to Harding. Also says Esther has been married for 34 years- which takes us back to 1877- when she married Denison Harding.
1913- Marriage certificate of youngest daughter, Edith lists father back to Denison Harding (still a carpenter).
1914- BMD death record for a Denison Harding 1914 Q2 Newport.

Wiltshire / Mary Ann Harris JASPER
« on: Wednesday 07 September 11 18:57 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information (birth and names of parents) about my great great grandmother Mary Ann Harris Jasper.
She was born in 1811 either in Ashton Keynes (according to 1851 Census) or South Cerney (according to 1871 census) and married on the 17th July, 1831 to William Harding (of Ewen, near Kemble-then Wilts now Glos.) at St John the Baptist, Gloucester City.
She died in 1888 Q4 in Cirencester, Glos.
An alternative version of her name is Mary Ann Miller Jasper.

Lancashire / Armnalla Nelson/Fielding
« on: Monday 05 September 11 19:36 BST (UK)  »
My great grand mother was Armnalla Nelson and married John Fielding 4 Dec 1880 in St George's, Hulme. Family then moved to Salford.
Problem is her name is never spelt the same twice! (so much for the advantage of an unusual name!)
Marriage certificate : Armnalla : father Henry.
1881 Census: Amy (lodging at 32, Monmouth St). Birthplace listed as Bowden, Cheshire. Birth year deduced as 1863.
1891 Census Amelia (living 33, Rixton St). Birthplace listed as Bowden, Cheshire.  Birth year deduced as 1864.
Died 1900 Q3 (Salford).  BMD death record:listed as Armanella.

No Birth record found but 1871 Census for Altrincham (near Bowden) gives a Henry Nelson (wife Margaret) with daughter Amelia, born 1863 but in Manchester.
BMD does give birth for a Arnynella Nelson, 1863 Q1 (Salford) and Lancashire OPC baptism records gives result for a Annynella Nelson at St Stephen's, Salford on 25 March 1863. However father is given as James (mother fine as Margaret).
Finally Armnalla's youngest daughter was christened Armnalla as on birth certificate and 1901 Census. However in 1911 (living with her uncle John Allen) is listed as Armanella.
Any help -particularly sorting out her birth record- would be most welome.
A niece (daughter of Armnalla's sister Sarah) was also baptized Armnalla Hope (and spelt correctly on 1911 census).
