Aberdeenshire / Fasque House servants
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello I am trying to find out if a family story is true. There is a story that one of my husbands ancestors was a servant at Fasque House/ Balbegno Castle during the time that Gladstone was prime minister. She told family members that she was working there when he visited his brother. Her name was Isabella Smith - born 8 March 1862 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, about 2 miles from Fasque. WE know that she was definitely a domestic servant- according to the Census in 1881. She was at home on the census but lived less than 2 miles away.
I wonder if anyone has any ideas where the archives etc could be for the estate. I have tried contacting them and also Glen Dye estate but no one there has any archives. I wondered if any museums or local history groups would have any ideas?

« on: Monday 20 March 23 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if there are any records of Domestic servants employed at Fasque during the time that PM William Ewart Gladstone visited his brother Thomas who had inherited the estate from his father. Approx- 1880-1889
I would really like to know if the stories passed down the family about her working there when he visited are true.

I am researching my late aunts family from Cape town. I've found reference to them on the National archives for south Africa and want to try to see the documents. I have tried emailing but the email keeps bouncing back. Their details are as follows:

Violet Angelique ( Bone) Arnold died 1955
I would be grateful for any help.

Trying to find out more information about
Suzanne Louise Aimee Alexandre 1896–1980
BIRTH 21 DECEMBER 1896 • Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France
DEATH 11 AVRIL 1980 • Buchy, Seine-Maritime, France
Married and Englishman in Rouen during WW1 - moved to Birmingham England to live with him until 1950ish. Then no trace in UK of them- can't find his death in UK. She died in Buchy in 1980- death cert states she is a widow, I cannot find out what happened between them being both at an address in Birmingham in 1950 and then her death in 1980. Got her birth cert, their marriage cert and lots of reference to them in Birmingham until 1950 then nothing!
Anyone any ideas how I can find anything else to help find when they left the UK and when and where her husband Charles Edwin Whiting died?  French death certificates online have to be searched by year and are not indexed yet.
Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Does anyone know if and how I can get a copy of the death certificate? Although the link takes me to the website and I can search for the record - it's a huge document and I didn't manage to find her on the list- I really don't understand how I go about getting more information. I'd be really grateful for any tips.
I am hoping the certificate may help me find out about her husband, Charles Edwin Whiting, as I cannot find where he died and when. They were in the UK together (in Birmingham) until about 1950. Suzanne's father (Paul Victor Alexandre) died in Birmingham in 1942.

Lanarkshire / Military records or anything!
« on: Tuesday 13 April 21 17:44 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to get more information regarding the following Ancestor on my husbands side:-
Robert Lamont 1912–1995
BIRTH 18 OCT 1912 • Glasgow Maryhill, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 1995 • Glasgow Martha Street  610/ 404
Father :- Robert Lamont 1883-1965
Mother :- Maria Thomson McKenzie - 1891-1971

Not sure if he married- can't find a record, also not sure of his death date. Don't think I can order certificate if it is 1995. Hoping maybe a newspaper entry somewhere or a will? Would also love to know about his military records- trying to find a link to a DNA match and need to know what regiment he was in and where he served etc.
Hoping for some help - usually have a great response from the Roots community so fingers crossed!

Midlothian / Mystery of grandchild Pamela- Edinburgh
« on: Monday 08 February 21 19:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello- I am looking for help with determining the parentage of a child called Pamela who was the grandaughter of  Andrew Lamont (DOB 21 December 1888 died 4 July 1966  ) He married Alexandrina Fyfe on 23 September 1915 in Cupar, Fife. They had three children during their marriage. He died on 4 July 1966 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, at the age of 77.
Their 3 children were all girls:
Wilhelmina Small Lamont BIRTH 20 JUL 1917 • Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland
DEATH Unknown
Isabella Fyfe Lamont BIRTH 25 MAY 1920 • Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland
DEATH 23 AUG 1995 • Edinburgh, Scotland
Alexandrina Fyfe Lamont BIRTH 29 SEP 1925 • Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland
DEATH 21 MAY 1995 • Edinburgh, Scotland

I know that Isabella was married to Gordon Clutterbuck in 1952 in Edinburgh and they went to South Africa. He died on 19 June 1976 in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa, at the age of 60.
I cannot find any mention of children.
I cannot find any marriage records for the other 2 girls.
I have a photograph of Andrew and Alexandrina F (snr) with a girl called Pamela who is aged about 5. Andrew died in 1966 so the girl is likely to have been born around 1960 ish. I have no other information other that the photograph names her as Pamela and was taken in Edinburgh outside their house. 25 Glendevon Road Edinburgh. The reverse of the photograph says:- "Pop me and grandchild Pamela" in Alexandrina's writing.
I would be so grateful if anyone can find anything to tell me which of the sisters was Pamela's mother?

World War One / Casualty List look up
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 15:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find more information about Private (H)Harry Findler who was in the Grenadier Guards in WW1. Service number 14674. He was apparently listed as wounded in the Casualty List issued by the war office - the report is dated 22/05/1916.
He was born in Staffordshire 16/3/1888.
I think that he was in the 1st battalion.
Ay information would be great. Thanks
