Armed Forces / POW - John William WHETTON
« on: Friday 11 November 11 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
Today I was thinking about my grandfather, as I often do, who was fortunate enough to survive WW1.

It would be interesting if I could find out more about his time in the war but so far I've not found out much. I think I once tried to find out but records for Prisoners of War do not seem to exist.

My mother always tells the tale of how he was captured by Germans - don't know where - and was kept in stocks. Food was very scarce but because of his lovely singing voice a girl on the other side of the fence heard him, took pity on him and sneaked bread through the holes in the fence. He hid it away from his captors and managed to survive with this girl's help

How much of this is true or part of my mother's imagination (she has a vivid imagination!!) I don't know. It would be good to find out but don't know how I would.

He was John William WHETTON (born 1889 in Clay Cross, Derbyshire) of the Nottingham & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Forresters) and, according to his war records, was in Egypt. Presumably this would be where he was taken prisoner.  His regiment No. was 22500.

I'm wondering if he was taken to Belgium. I have a passport of his showing he travelled there after in 1920, maybe to visit a lady out there, the one who helped him?

Maybe someone here could shed a bit of light on this but I'm afraid the information I have is very sketchy.  :(

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Trying to find a Marcia Fletcher
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 18:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help a cousin in America who is trying to find the lady who added a photo to a Canadian web site.

The lady in the photo shares the same name as her Gt.Grandmother and is mostly likely to be her.  She was Ida Miller BEST.

The web site in question is through Rootsweb - New Brunswick Genweb - Carlton County and is under Family Photos.  The submitter of the photo was a Marcia Fletcher.

She has contacted the site co-ordinator who tells her the lady has changed her e-mail address.

I know its a bit of a long shot but maybe someone out there may know how to contact this lady.

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry connection service - problem
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 23:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)

Has anyone had the same problem with Ancestry as I have?

I have tried to reply to a contact but my message has come back undelivered saying that the address had permanent fatal errors.

I have contacted Ancestry and received a standard reply that the error has been reported to their developers.

I would be interested to know if this has happened to anyone else and how they got round the problem.

I am an Ancestry subscriber.

Reference Library / SIT: Where have my own names gone?
« on: Friday 22 June 07 18:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)
I have just checked on my surnames on the Surname Interest Table but cannot spot my own entries.  They were there previously.
Where have they gone?  :(

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Look-up please for DAVY
« on: Sunday 17 June 07 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)

I have very little to go on but I wonder if anyone can please find a marriage for a William DAVY/DAVIS and Emma ?.  According to census's William was born in Normanton, Nottinghamshire about 1815.  Emma was born about 1817 in Leicestershire.

Their first child Sarah (I'm presuming its the first) was born about 1838 in Nottingham. Children born after then were all born in Clay Cross, Derbyshire.

Sorry that is all the information I have at the moment.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Votes for Women in Doncaster
« on: Friday 08 June 07 11:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)
Further to my previous posting, I am now trying to find out any information regarding my Gt.Grandmother's involvement in the Votes for Women campaign in Doncaster.
She was Caroline WILSON (nee BEST) and apparently a leading campaigner.
My Mother's cousin remembers her telling her the story of it but if anyone has any access to archive material regarding this, or any information, I would be pleased to hear from you.
Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Completed Requests / Where was Caroline BEST in 1881?
« on: Tuesday 05 June 07 22:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)
Can anyone please help me find my Gt.Grandmother.  I can account for her on all other census's but she's disappeared in 1881!
She was Caroline BEST, born 1864 in March, Cambridgeshire.  She was still there in 1871.  In 1888 she married Charles Wilson in Doncaster and lived there for the rest of her life.
She was possibly employed as a domestic servant with a family in Doncaster prior to marriage.
I have tried searching all combinations of names, Christian and Surnames, different counties but to no avail.
If anyone can help me solve this mystery, I would be grateful.
Thank you.

Cambridgeshire / Harry BEST of March
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 19:57 BST (UK)  »
 :)  Hello
I am having difficulty in finding Harry BEST (born 1871) after 1901.  On the 1901 census he was still living with his Mother, Susannah Best on Gaul Drove, March and was employed as a letter carrier.
I have put messages out on the RootsWeb Postal Workers mailing list but have not had any replies.
If anyone has any clues where I can look next, or can find him for me, then I would be grateful.
Thank you.
