Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Translation of Latin - Help Needed!
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone translate the attached, please? It's from John of Fordun's Chronicle (1871 version) edited by Skene. In particular, I'd like precise details of the parts concerning Isabella.
Many thanks,
Bob

Scotland / Isabel, wife of Robert de Brus
« on: Thursday 28 March 24 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me the year that Robert de Brus (4th Lord of Annandale) wed Isabel, sister of John, earl of Huntingdon, please? Also, does anyone know the year Isabel was born, and John, her brother?
Cheers,
Bob

Aberdeenshire / Bruce holdings in the county
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if the Bruce's held land in Aberdeenshire before Robert, 4th Lord of Annandale, wed Isabel, daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon? I'm interested to know if the first two Lords of Annandale had any connections to Aberdeenshire.

Cheers,

Bob

Bedfordshire / John Armstrong married Sarah Allen Query
« on: Tuesday 13 February 24 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any proof of a marriage between John Armstrong and Sarah Allen in Bedfordshire in 1698, but having no luck! John died in 1727 in Riseley, while Sarah was born 9 July 1676 in the county.

Many thanks,

Bob

Dumfriesshire / 'Rakkes' Armstrongs
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 19:00 BST (UK)  »
Robson's 'Ride With The Moonlight' page 15 states that the Armstrong clan had the attachment of 'Rakkes' ('Rackas', Rackhouse' etc)  and that it meant that the individual belonged to a branch of the Armstrongs by that 'to-name', or nickname. He then states that there had been 'Rakkes' Armstrongs in Liddesdale for a long time.
What is the origin of 'Rakkes'?
Cheers,
Bob

Dumfriesshire / Canonbie 'Names of thosse thoght evill' Query
« on: Wednesday 25 October 23 08:07 BST (UK)  »
The Scottish Privy Council appointed commissioners to maintain law and order in the Borderlands. One list of mosstroopers was dated 1641, and entitled: 'The names of thosse that is thoght evill ones in Cannabie pairroschin.' The paper names a number of people to be wary of. One such was 'James Armestrang in the Hoillhowse - thought to be an evill one.'

The reference note I have for the document has faded & illegible. Does anyone recognise the document and, more importantly, what its full reference details are?

Cheers,

Bob

Dumfriesshire / Capelfoot Location
« on: Tuesday 25 July 23 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone confirm the location of Capelfoot, please? I was told it is some 5 miles slightly south-west of Arkleton. Arkleton is 4 miles north of Langholm. However, someone else said it was closer to Lockerbie, and another claimed it was nearer to Castle O'er.
Cheers,
Bob

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 16th C Will Query
« on: Wednesday 10 May 23 13:43 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can tell me what the attached will says, please? Most of it is reasonably clear, but odd words are puzzling! It starts with two names, then what's on the attached.
Thanks,
Bob

Armed Forces / Almsman Query
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 15:18 BST (UK)  »
I found a ref dated 1588 in which someone was 'entered as an almsman' on 6d a day. It was under the heading 'Wages of the Army'. What exactly was an almsman in this case?
Cheers,
Bob
