I ordered the Retirement from Metropolitan Police Record, for William Davis, & was sent this in error.
I have 2 copies, so if anybody is researching
a George Woolway born Lapford Devon in  Dec 1841, son of William & Sarah Woolway, &
married to Sarah, this will be of interest to you.

I recently got back into research, & changed from PAF to RootsMagic
I decided to merge both my parents trees, as I couldn't think of a good reason to keep them separate anymore, & decided to take the opportunity for a major tidy up.
Merging duplicate sources was pretty easy.

RM wants you to separate street address/hospital/cemetery etc from the location, which is fair enough,
I hadn't realised what a mess many of my places were.
Missing counties, Country, or commas were all pretty easy, to sort, except that RM wants to add United Kingdom after England, or Scotland & I don't, & I haven't found an easy way to handle that.

Then you get to London/Middlesex  :'(
for a start RM's gazetteer seems to think nearly everywhere in London, is in Middlesex, regardless of date, so there is no easy solution there, I have to check each record to see if it's listed as Middlesex or London.

But even that isn't as straightforward as you'd think
for instance
1853 death certificate,
Shoreditch, Haggerstone West, Middlesex

2 Hertford Street, Shoreditch

1855 birth certificate,
Shoreditch, Haggerstone West, Middlesex

2 Hertford Street, Haggerstone, Shoreditch

1857 birth certificate,
Shoreditch, Haggerstone West, Middlesex

2 Hertford Street, Shoreditch

1859 birth certificate,
Shoreditch, Haggerstone West, Middlesex

2 Hertford Street, Shoreditch

1867 death certificate,
Shoreditch, Haggerstone West, Middlesex

11 Hertford Street, Haggerstone

I've got the same sort of problem with
numerous other places in London/Middlesex, & I'm not really sure,
what the correct address form would be.

How do you handle entries like this?

I have the burial record for George Dowle,
Pretty sure the date is 7 April 1921,
after that I'm struggling until
St Louis the body of George Dowle son of Edward Dowle then some _ _ _ for where his mothers name should be.
Then I'm struggling again & I'm not sure if the name is a person, or a place, (If it's a wife, it's not the one we have him marrying in 1910)
then I get 36 years.
I think the next part is those present Ovide Rocheleau & Charles Rocheleau but can't get the bit after that.

Can anybody help me with this please?
Regards
Chris

I have what I think may be a conversion from C of E into the RC Church in 1903, but my French is not brilliant & I'm struggling with the exact wording, if anybody could help that would be brilliant.

Some of the names I know
George Dowle,
Edward Dowle his father, Jeanny (Jane) Popps his mother
Jeanny (Jane) Dowle his sister & Ovide Rocheleau her husband

England / Family vanishes after 1871 census, any ideas please?
« on: Monday 02 September 13 12:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I haven't done any research for a very long while but recently had a small breakthrough which got me kick started again, but I'm stuck already :( so any ideas welcome.

Edward Matson Dowel married Jane Popps 9 Aug 1868 St John's Penge
Jane was born 1842 Boxted Essex
Edward appears to have been born in Dover Kent in 1849

In the 1871 census, the surname on ancestry was transcribed as Dorrell & Edward's middle name as Watson,
but I found them at
4 Gothic Cottage Sydenham Lewisham Kent

with daughters Maria Jane born 1869
& Ellen born 1871

There is also a Mary Anne Matson Dowell (2 ll's) with the correct parents listed on
London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906

Then the family vanishes, I can find no trace of deaths, or marriage of the daughters (or a re marriage of Edward or Jane), or emigration,
searching using every name variation I can think of, nor any that appear to be them in any census after 1871.
I've tried searching the censuses on ancestry just using Jane born Boxted abt 1842, which is how I found the 1871 Dorrell entry.

Suffolk / BROOKS & CHANDLER - Felixstowe or Ipswich Area
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 03:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm searching for info on (or descendants of) the following people.

Both of these marriages were registered in the ROCHFORD  district. (Essex)
Ivy Ethel Ada CARTER Married Stanley Alfred Brooks in 1937

Florence Lilian Alexandra CARTER married Alan Herbert  Chandler or Johnson (Father's surname Johnson, Alan signed the marriage cert as Chandler) in 1936, married at Christ Church Thorpe Bay Essex.

Ivy & Stanley Brooks lived in Kelvedon Essex for a while.

Both families moved to Suffolk at some point

Florence Chandler's death was registered in Ipswitch in 1998
Ivy Brook's death was registered in Ipswitch 2002 (Apparently she was living in Felixstowe in 2001)

Do these people tie in with your research in any way?

Hi
Ethel Maud Daisy (known as Daisy) Popps born 1885 St Pancras married Heinrich Frank 1905 in Islington.

They had 2 children that I'm aware of
Karolina Beatrice Daisy Frank b Islington 1906
Frida (Freda) Hilda Maud Frank b Islington 1908
(Christened Frida, Registered Freda)

Heinrich died in 1909 German Hospital Dalston.

Daisy married Alexander Carter in 1913 Islington
          Children I'm aware of
Florence Lilian Alexandra Carter 1914 Paddington
Ivy Ethel Ada Carter 1916 Paddington

Alexander Carter died before 1932.

I'm looking for any other children of Daisy & Alexander plus descendants of these 4 girls.
I have been unable to find marriages for the elder 2 girls under FRANK.

I recently found mariages for the 2 younger girls, in the ROCHFORD district.

Completed Census Requests / 1881 Census Lookup Please - NOT LDS
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 03:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi
does anyone have the 1881 Census Cd for Kenwyn Truro Cornwall ?
The image ones, NOT the LDS Transcription
I need clarification on an entry from the LDS transcription,
the details are,
Dwelling   Calenick St
  Census Place Kenwyn, Cornwall, England
  Family History Library Film   1341555
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   2312 / 51
Page Number 19 The entry should have surnames DAVEY, TEAGUE, SARA, JORDAN, & possibly SEARLE. It might be two consecutive entries.

The info contained in the transcription doesn't make sense & I need to see if it's correct. ???
