Galway / Trying to locate' Aslum' in Galway
« on: Monday 21 November 16 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmothers brother Michael O'Sullivan born c1894, allegedly died in an institution in county Galway in the late 1970'80s. Apparently he killed a man and he never recovered we dont know whether this was because he killed someone whilst in the British army or if he was with some republican movement, stories are not clear. His family home was in Cornamona and we believe he was somewhere not too far away from their. I can not find any info on him as regards army records etc. From his photo his badge appears to be from the Welsh Fusiliers. My main focus is where he died
 any help would be wonderful.

Galway / Galway city newspapers 1969
« on: Monday 21 November 16 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Im trying to find information about the death of my grandfather who died in Galway in 1969.It wasnt a straightforward death so I was wondering if it may have been reported in a local newspaper. He was buried on 17th March 1969 but I am not sure of the actual date of his death. My mum and her father were estranged at the time and mum has expressed an interest in how he died. Where could we access any papers of the time?
Many thanks in advance

Ireland / Advice required
« on: Friday 23 September 16 09:25 BST (UK)  »
Hope this post isnt too long I need to pick brains! I started researching my Ryan family from Galway 8 years ago. I was helped on my way with some research done for me. Using My g grandfather Michael Ryans marriage (confirmed) and census a 'possible' birth was found and I ran with it. My mums uncle gave me some info about Michaels father Martin Ryan, his occupation was Law clerk as indicated on Michaels marriage record. I kind of sidelined this and went with the Michael born Galway 1872 who was a labourer on all the childrens birth records that I found and built the family I have now. Here then is where it went wrong. with the civil records now on line I wanted to trace all the births, all had father as 'labourer-' during my search of every Ryan in Galway i kept spotting births for father Martin Ryan, Law clerk. What had I done???? I found a Michael born to this father but 4 years earlier, 1868, could this be him? The only record that fits this date is his death record. Has anyone else had this discrepancy? Why would he claim to be 4 years younger? Mums uncle also gave me some of Michaels siblings names and I could never match them until now with the 'new' Martin Ryan. This is also a warning to other researchers that not everything is as it seems and to check everything thoroughly. Any thoughts would be appreciated before I delete my tree as it stands :) Thanks for reading.

His mother was Johanna Christian and his father was Alexander Anderson,  a sea Captain. I can't find anyinformation on Alexander or Johanna on any census apart from that on Olivers marriage cert. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Canada / William O'Sullivan, Middle Melford, Guys Co.
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 20:44 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on William O'Sullivan. He was born on the 15th March 1890 in Kilkee, Clare, Ireland. He married Edith Frances Somers (b1895 Melford Guysborough County) before 1920 in Boston, Mass. He had one son also William O'sullivan born c1924 in Boston. The family arrived in Canada in 1932. In Boston he was a Mechanic but in Canada he became a farmer. He arrived with a substantial amount of money on him $11,800 to be exact, that was quite a sum at the time!
I have found his gravestone on line in Melford, Guysborogh County, he died in 1979, his wife Edith in 1971!
My grandmother told me that his farm was huge and he never actually got to walk around the place in his lifetime!
I would love to make contact with any of his family or anyone who knew the family. Ultimately I would love to see photos of the family and the farm...but that I guess is a long time in the future. Also what prompted him to return to his wifes home town to become a farmer

Many thanks for reading this.

I have also posted on the USA board to try for information whilst he was there.

United States of America / William O'Sullivan Boston
« on: Friday 30 September 11 22:39 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage of William O'Sullivan b 1890 Kilkee, Ireland to Edith Frances Somers b 1895 Nova Scotia, Canada.

William arrived in the U.S from Ireland in 1914 to stay with his sister Margaret (Daisy )O'sullivan. By the time of the 1920 census he is married to Edith. On the 1930 census they are living in Fitchburg and they have a son William O'Sullivan born in c1924 in Boston, I would love to find his birth record.
In 1932 the family move to Canada where his profession was to be farming, he was a mechanic in Boston. In the Border Crossing record he appears to have 11,800 dollars with him, a lot of money for a mechanic in those very hard times.

I will post on the Canada forum to continue his story and to hopefully contact any surviving relatives, well, thats my hope!!!

If anyone can give me any background information on the times in Boston or how to research in the Massachusettes area I would be very grateful.

Thanks for reading.

Staffordshire / Winkhill Cottages.
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I am on a mission to try and unravel the life of my Great Grandfather George Storey. He was born in Kendal, Westmorland in 1868. He married Annie Dale in Congleton and had 5 children. Annie died in the Eccles Manchester area in 1916. He left the children with his eldest daughter who was married by this time and went off doing his own thing. In 1922 he married Mary Ann Hornsby in the Eccles area and from then until Mary Ann dies his life is a mystery. I was told by my grandmother years ago that there was a connection with the Leek area, this appears to be correct because Mary Ann dies there in 1937. George is the informant. she died in Leek cottage hospital. The address for the couple was Winkhill cottages, Winkhill. What I would love to know is anything about their time there. Are there any records that could be looked into for example, any electoral Rolls?
Also are there any pictures of the cottages. I am desperate for anything from those missing 15 years.
Many thanks for reading this.

Westmorland / Brick wall Eleanor Storey nee Clement
« on: Friday 16 September 11 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Eleanor Clement was born in Sedburgh, Yorkshire in 1841. She married George Clark Storey(b Kendal) in Kendal in 1860.
In 1861( Kendal) and 1871( Barrow, Dalton) they are on the census living happily all together!

On the 1881 census husband George is living away with his son George jnr age 14, they are boarders and general labourers living in Dalton in Furness. In 1891 George jnr and snr are again living together in Accrington and are both Corporation labourers. George jnr is now married and has a young son all living together. What puzzles me is that George snr, on both census is down as married. The big problem for me is that I cannot find Eleanor Storey anywhere on any census,  I cannot find a death for her either.
The Storey family conection to Kendal is quite strong but I have no strong reason to believe that she died in the Kendal area but it is a starting point.
George Storey snr died in Congleton, Cheshire after an accident with a hoarding!
Can anyone please help me find Eleanor after 1871!!

thanks,
Jacqui
