Oxfordshire / St Clement's Parish Records
« on: Monday 18 May 15 09:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Would anyone know if St Clement's parish records are available online anywhere? I'm looking for a William Taylor born abt 1815 there, spouse is Sarah Unknown. He was a Stone Mason in the St Clement's area until somewhere between 1851 and 1861 where he moved to London. As far as I can see St Clement's isn't available on the IGI. I'd like to try and find the birth of their son John Taylor in 1840 there, their marriage estimated 1834ish and William's birth if possible. Any direction as to where I might find this information online would be appreciated.

TIA  :)

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Passenger List - McDonnell
« on: Tuesday 31 August 10 13:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Would anyone be able to help me find a Lillian McDonnell b abt 1898 and her son Robert b abt 1916 on a passenger list going from the UK to Australia.

I have found their outgoing journey from Australia to the UK (Southampton) in December 1923 and believe she may have been logged as Lillian MacDonnell returning in 1924. Wondered if someone might be able to check for me that this is Lillian and Robert before I buy the image?

Also do the passenger lists give any further information? I'm not sure why she would be visiting the UK - she's listed as going to Laverton, Near Bradway, Worcestershire for which I have no connection at the moment. She appears to have been born in Australia and although her husband, Edward McDonnell, was from the UK all his family appear to be in Yorkshire, and he's not listed on the outgoing journey.

Many thanks

Australia / Edward McDONNELL - Where do I go from here?
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 19:07 BST (UK)  »
The story so far of Edward McDonnell is that he was born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1883.

In 1913 he boarded the Omrah Orient to Melbourne Australia. On 2nd Nov 1915 he joined the Australian Imperial Force and was discharged as medically unfit on 2nd May 1916.

I have just received some letters from the Department of Repatriation in both Sydney and Melbourne from 1931.

On 25th Feb 1931 I have a MEMORANDUM for : Repatriation Commission SYDNEY stating that they have "no record of him in this branch and it would appear from his address (not given) that the case would be dealt with by your office".

On 13th March 1931 I have a MEMORANDUM for : Repatriation Commission MELBOURNE referencing the 25th Feb memo stating they have "no record held for this ex soldier". He is trying to claim for medical treatment and a pension by the looks of it, and the memo states "he was confined to camp and did not proceed overseas". The memo asks them to "inquire from the defence Department in their state and forward details to this branch" so they can deal with his application.

On 20th March 1931 A MEMORANDUM for : Department of Repatriation SYDNEY appears to forward Attestation Papers and Medical Documents relating to Edward McDonnell.

So if I've got this right....... MELBOURNE wrote to SYDNEY (25/2/1931) saying it should be dealt with at their office because of Edward's address. SYDNEY wrote back to MELBOURNE (13/03/1931) saying please forward the relevant papers, which MELBOURNE did (20/03/1931).

So can I assume from that, that Edward was living in the Sydney area in 1931?

I have been trying to find out if Edward maybe remarried and had children after he emigrated in 1913, but have had no luck searching the Australian Indexes in Victoria or NSW.

Would anyone have any ideas to take me forward with Edward?

Many thanks :)

The Common Room / What's Your Opinion?
« on: Sunday 29 March 09 17:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I've posted about my gr grandad Boyd a couple of times and am still ploughing through to try to sort his family out straight in my tree and would be grateful if anyone can take a look at where I am now and give an opinion.

Frederick George Boyd was born in Croydon on 14th September 1892. His father was Silas George Boyd, a milkman and his mother was Elizabeth late Wilson, formerly Bowyer. As per the certificate.

I have Frederick on the 1901 census Class: RG13; Piece: 637; Folio: 18; Page: 27. with what I assumed was Elizabeth Bowyer, now I'm not so sure.

Also on the census I believe are Edith and Alice Borrer (mis-transcribed)

Tracing the two Borrer children back to 1891 Class: RG12; Piece: 588; Folio 22; Page 37; GSU roll: 6095698. They are with Elizabeth, although the birth year differs by 4 years, the birth place is the same.

Back to 1881 Class: RG11; Piece: 808; Folio: 96; Page: 20; Line:  ; GSU roll: 1341190. Elizabeth b 1854 to match 1891 with the two older sons Alfred and William Borrer. This time with husband Alfred Borrer.

The only marriage I can find is one for Alfred Borrer and Elizabeth Studdle in Q2 of 1875 in Croydon.

I can't find any way to link Elizabeth Bowyer/Wilson to the Elizabeth on the 1901 census.

So I'm thinking it's possible that although Elizabeth is given as a surname Boyd on the 1901 census, she was actually Elizabeth Borrer nee Studdle, and therefore maybe not a blood relation of Frederick Boyd.

It still raises questions re the 4 year age gap between the 1881/91 census and the 1901, and why she would give her surname as Boyd if it wasn't??

I'd be grateful if anyone has any thoughts on the above.

Many thanks :)

London and Middlesex / Elusive Permain Children - Help Please
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm hoping someone may have some time and spare eyes, as mine are about to drop out  :)

William Permain b1836 had 6 children as per the 1911 census, 4 of which were still living in 1911.

With his first wife he had

Fanny 1870-1926
Henry abt 1872
Annie abt 1874
James 1877-1895
William abt 1879

With second wife

Ethel 1883-1947

So I have two living in 1911, Fanny and Ethel, and one died James.

It appears Annie, James and William lived in Wiltshire on the 1881 and 1891 census, but James died back in London in Chelsea in 1895.

I've tried tracing the remaining children, Henry, Annie and William to find marriages, deaths or census entries but keep coming up blank. Two should still be alive and traceable through to 1911.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

The Common Room / British Subject By Parentage ??
« on: Monday 09 February 09 10:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I think that in the nationality colum on the 1911 census one of my ancestors wrote "British subject by parentage"

Does anyone know what this means exactly, we believe the family may have come from Spain originally at some point and wondered if this may be a clue??

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Army Reserve 1871
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just having got some help with the old handwriting on the 1911 and 1871 censuses  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=359464.msg2362428   I wonder if anyone can help with any information regarding a private soldier in the army reserve in the paddington area (St Mary) in 1871?

The 1911 Census has him as an Army Life Pensioner, I have him as a Private Solider Army Reserve in 1871, (Class: RG10; Piece: 5; Folio: 52; Page: 33;)  but a lodging house keeper in 1881 and upholsterer from then on.

Would there be any accessable records for someone in the army reserve from that area/time, and could he have claimed a pension in 1911 from time in the army in 1871?

Many thanks :)
