Sussex Lookup Requests / Where is Fanny
« on: Monday 20 November 23 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I haven't posted for a while, I hope you can help me

My 2 x great grandmother was  Fanny Elizabeth Farmer
she was born on 26th December 1869 in Fletching and christened in July of the following year
Her mother was Elizabeth Farmer her father is unknown

I have found Elizabeth on the 1871 census as a servant aged 25 but there is no sign of Fanny
in 1873 Elizabeth married George Friend
in 1876 Elizabeth dies
George Friend goes on to marry Alice Steadman
Fanny is not with George in 1881
Fanny married in Feb 1891 and i can find her on the census after this and right up to her death in 1929

Fanny appears to have had a sister Harriett Amelia Farmer born in 1872 and christened in 1873 - again father unknown
1881 Harriett Amelia is with her uncle Richard Hatfield (her auntie Harriett nee Farmer was not present)
I also found Harriett Amelia in 1891 but after this i cannot find her

There was a funeral notice for Fanny Elizabeth in 1929 which mentions amongst her mourners Mrs Jefferies (Sister) and Tom Jefferies (Nephew)
I have no idea who Mrs Jefferies and Tom Jefferies are.

Hoping you can help.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Joshua Stevens / Stephens 1840
« on: Friday 07 December 12 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
 Quickie for you :

1841 Census I have Mary Stevens (aged 41) nee Waters at Three Cups Warbleton
She is with her daughter Naomi aged 9
And Joshua Stevens aged 10 months I do not know who Joshua is
HO107;  1108; : 4; : 20;  6;

For information:
Mary Waters married Samuel Stevens on 19 Aug 1815 at Warbleton
Sometimes Stevens is written as Stephens

They had children:
Mathew 1816-1901 (marries Jane Watson has children from 1849)
Faith 1817 (no further details known)
Mary Ann 1819 (ditto)
Matilda  1821-1882 (marries Thomas Mitchell in 1839)
James 1823 (no further details known)
Selina 1825 (has an illegitimate child Frank in 1851 and then marries Charles Howell and has more children from 1852)
George 1826 (no further details known)
Sophia 1828 (ditto)
Samuel 1830 (ditto)
Naomi 1832 (ditto)

I know I am missing a lot of detail but I have only just begun to follow up this line completely, I descend from Matilda

I am assuming that Joshua is the child of either Selina, James, Matilda, Mary Ann, Faith or Mathew but I just can’t seem to fit him in anywhere.

Can you help please ?

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Amos Burrows
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am having a little trouble completing Amos Burrows time line

b. Q2 1860 Leics 7a 188
s/o Benjamin Burrows & Catherine nee Brown,
1861 RG9 2291 33 3
(in 1865 Catherine marries Thomas Bentley)
1871 RG10 3273 65 5
Amos Burrows m. Amelia Johnson Q2 1886 Leics 7a 338
1887 birth of daughter Ada
1889 birth of daughter Gertie
1892 birth of son Bertie
1901 RG13 3000 36 18
d. Q1 1908 aged 47 Leics 7a 163

i cannot find Amos in 1881 or 1891, in 1891 he should be married to Amelia and have children Ada & Gertie.

I cannot find Amelia or the children in 1911

an Ada Burrows sailed to America in 1910 this could be my Ada Burrows or not as there is another one floating around also born Leicester 1886/87

I would appreciate it if someone could help me to fill in the gaps and also to try to confirm whether that was my Ada that sailed to America or not. she was apparently visiting friends Thomas Burrows.
Catherine & Benjamin seem to have had only the one child Amos.

it is from Catherines second marriage of which i descend.

over to you super stars x

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1940 US Census
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 12:56 BST (UK)  »

I have found my James Holman on the 1940 US Census at Douglas Wichita Sedgwick Kansas without his family  the enumerator has written something on the page in the top left corner at an angle I have no idea what this says can someone please  translate / transcribe

The details you need to find him are James Holman b. 1890 Glamorgan  lived in Oklahoma  Cherokee

This gives you James Holman b. 1891 Wales he worked on the  steam rail which gives us a reason he was away from home

Roll: T627_1271; Page: 82B; Enumeration District: 107-1.

His spouse was Nina C nee unknown b. 1889 Kansas
and he had 2 children Diamond / Durward 1912 and Kenneth C 1914

James H (Henry) appears to be enumerated twice and appears in Crawford Cherokee Kansas  with his wife Nina C and son Durward C aged 27
Transcribed as Holmes, I found these by putting in Nina C b. 1889 Kansas.

Roll: T627_1223; Page: 6B; Enumeration District: 11-11.

I know that Kenneth was buried in a US veterans cemetery so maybe he was at war ? but thinking out loud and rambling on did the US not join the war until 1942 ?

Anyhow over to you superstars x

The Common Room / Toni*’s OH Sc Hunt part 9

Continued from part 8
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=453286.new

So where are we at now?

Annie Susan Cullmer is proving to be a bit of a mystery in regards to her disappearance / death

She married in 1859 to Alfred Urwin
They had a daughter Georgette in I think 1858 if her age from the census is to be believed
Followed by 1860 Alfred James
And in 1866 Rosina Sarah
(was there a daughter Ann / Annie Susan too I think there was)
Sometime in between this there was another daughert Elizabeth Selina although no birth registartiion is found she was baptised 11 May 1866 with Alfred James and Rosina Sarah.
In 1868 banns were read between Alfred Urwin and Sarah Skidmore nee Hudson and they married a year after these banns on 10 May 1869 it appears with the blessing of Annie Susans family as they were witnesses
Alfred & Sarah had more children we can more or less follow all of them through the census to death.
But we can’t find Annie Susans death or any other record other than the christening of Elizabeth Selina

working on the basis that maybe Alfred James might prove to be a clue as in 1871 he is not with his father on the census, in fact we cannot find him in 1871 we followed him forward through the census and found him with his father in 1881, married to Clara Eastop in 1883 and then on the 1901 & 1911 census but NOT 1891
Alfred James had 3 children Alfred John, Clara Susan Violet Nellie and Robert George we can work forward with these although Alfred John did marry in 1904 he is with his parents (as married) in 1911 but no sign of his wife Edith Ellen  nee Lonegran and no positive death either.

I think that as Alfred James named his daughter Clara Susan then he must have know his mother was Annie Susan and not Sarah Hudson Skidmore unless of course they just liked the name Susan ?

So we need to find Alfred James in 1871 and 1891
We need to find BMD for Elizabeth Selina
We need to find record of Annie Susan after 1866
can we find Ellen Edith Urwin nee Lonergan in 1911

Sometimes Urwin is recorded as Irwin

Something else just occurred to me, Rosina Sarah was called Rosina Sarah so was her mother Sarah Skidmore? Did she pose as Annie Susan when the children were christened on 11 May 1866?

I wonder how Robert Skidmore died he was hardly cold when banns were read
As banns were read in April 1868 (I think 25th) and Roberts death is recorded as Q2 1868 i.e. April as deaths had to be recorded 5 days after they occurred (now 8 days) so if he died 5 days before 1st April that gives us 26th March so he may have been dead 1 month maximum

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Pickering / Goodall
« on: Thursday 03 November 11 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Can you help me get back further with this family please?

Sarah Ellen Goodall married Joseph John Pickering on 25 Dec 1911 at Heckmondwicke
The certificate reads:
Marriage 25 December 1911
Parish church Heckmondwicke
Joseph John Pickering / 23 / Bachelor / Labourer / George Street Heckmondwicke / Jonathon Pickering / Painter
Sarah Ellen Goodall / 21 / Spinster / / Croft Street Heckmondwicke / Joseph Goodall / Dyers Labourer
both signed
wits : Edward John Forester / Grace Goodall

They had at least one child Lily in 1918 (the death register gives her d.o.b as 13.10.1918)
I have Lilys marriage certificate:
in the parish church Tarring Neville with South Heighton by licence
15 Sept 1945
Donald Edward Hickman / 24 / Bachelor / Soldier / 1 Manor Cottages South Heighton / William Hickman / General Labourer
Lily Pickering / 26 / Spinster / / 39 Upper Beansgrand or Beansyard Street Heckmondwike Yorks / Joseph John Pickering / Condenser Minder
signed Donald Edward Hickman Lily Pickering
witnesses Hilda Pickering Leslie Hickman
Ronald B Lunt Officiating Minister

You will see that one of the witnesses is Hilda Pickering.
There was a Hilda Pickering mmn. Goodall registered in Q1 1922. As much i would ike to  I cannot assume she is a sister to Lily as there are 2 Pickering / Goodall marriages in the register for Q4 Dewsbury 1911 Lena Goodall & Leonard Pickering and then Sarah E Goodall & Joseph J Pickering.

Just to clarify it’s the Goodall / Pickering information I am after back beyond Sarah & Josephs marriage.

Many thanks for your help and time.

Toni

P.s. I am not entirely sure what area of Yorkshire Dewsbury comes under. (North, East, West Riding) perhaps if I am not in the right bit the MODS can move me.

p.p.s both Donald and Lily are deceased

Sussex / the two Miss Cooks
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 22:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello

this may be a lost cause but sometimes you can work miracles!

My Great Grandfather worked as chief commissionaire at the cinema in Newhaven High Street in the 1930's I believe at this time it was the Cinema De Lux  later it became the Rex Cinema.

The Cinema was owned and ran by the 2 Miss Cooks.  who at that time lived at Saxon Lodge and my great grandfather also tended the garden for them. Saxon Lodge was demolished i think in the 1950's / 1960's and there now stands a post office on the site.

I am interested in learning more about the 2 Miss Cooks but the above is all the information i have

over to you!

Toni
