Caernarvonshire / Nellie Mary Roberts help please.
« on: Tuesday 18 April 23 20:55 BST (UK)  »
Evening everyone.

My wife and I seem to be a bit stuck finding her great aunt, Nellie Mary Roberts. We can only find her in the 1891/01/11 census. No trace of her in any BMD or 1921 or 1939.

According to the 1891, shes at Back Madoc Street, Llandudno with parents Robert and Harriet. 1901 shes at 128, Mostyn Street, Llandudno and finally in 1911 shes at Brookes Street, Llandudno.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we find it a bit odd, that theres no trace in any BMDs.

Thank you.
David.

Hertfordshire / What has he been transcribed as?
« on: Friday 10 June 22 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Evening all.

Im trying to find Augustus Wallis born 1844 to Edward Wallis and Ann (Bishop). Born in Albury, I cant find him in 1851 and trying to work out what the name has been butchered to by the transcriber. In later census he is down as Agastus. Family has moved by 1861 to Broxted, Essex.

Can anyone help what I need to type into my search bar. Not sure how Id search by parish as im sure it must be possible but I dont know how.

Any advice appreciated.

David.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Answering Gods call in Argentina
« on: Monday 06 June 22 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone.

Bit out of my depth here as ive never had to work with anything other than England or Wales before, and just hoping someone can give me some advice which way to turn next.

One of dads uncles was buried overseas (at the time we didnt know where), and as a child I remember seeing a photo of his grave with a lot of people gathered around it.

Whilst taking a break from one branch, I moved on to dads side of the tree and found a probate record for him. His name was Edward John Wallis born in Bethnal Green, London in 1891. Here is what the probate says:

WALLIS the reverend Edward John otherwise John Edward of Missions of Seamen Ingeniero White Bahia Blanca Argentina and of 1, Queen Margarets Grove London. Died 15 Feb 1946 at Bahia. Administration 9 Apr to Alice May Adams (his sister). Former Grant P.R. 18 Sep 1946.

Ive never seen the 'otherwise' in a probate before. Googling his name and Bahia and Seamans Mission seems to be particularly unhelpful. Can anyone give any advice as to what avenues to go down now?

Thanks,
David.

Technical Help / Printing search results from FindMyPast
« on: Saturday 28 May 22 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Evening everyone!

Does anyone know if theres a better way to print the search results from my FindMyPast search. Theres 60 odd results and would like a paper copy as I find it harder switching between windows when using my tree software. Ive found having a printed copy the easiest way to deal with piecing together a tree from the 17th century church records.

When I try and print, the waste of paper is ridiculous. Am I better typing the search results out in a spreadsheet to print? Seems a waste of time and effort so hoping theres a better way.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Leicestershire / Lutterworth marriage help please.
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Evening all,

Ive been sat here now for a while trying to find a marriage. But cant seem to find it. Can anyone help possibly find it, or know of any other resource or data collection that could be used to find the wifes surname?

Ive got James Stephenson and Judith of Lutterworth starting to have children from 1658 onwards. 1564-1836 is the coverage for marriages but nothing. Any advice greatfully received!

Thank you.
David.

The Common Room / Searching for specific wills or probate documents.
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 22:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Ive found a record on Ancestry that im interested in. Its in the collection 'UK, Extracted Probate Records 1269-1975'. And whether rightly or wrongly I was told that I could view the will or probate on FindMyPast.

When I go to the collection 'Leicestershire Wills and Probate Records Browse' collection on FindMyPast and enter the date 1683. Hundreds of pages then come up, how do I find what im looking for as searches by name just draw a blank.

Back on Ancestry, this is what ive got to work with....

Name:   Stevenson, James
Dates:   1683
Place:   Lutterworth, Leicestershire, England
Book:   Calendar of Wills Proved and of Administrations Granted in the Commissary Court of the Peculiar and Exempt Jurisdiction of Groby, 1580-1800. (Will)
Collection:   Leicestershire and Rutland: - Index to the Wills and Administrations proved and granted in the Archdeaconry Court of Leicester 1660-1750, and in the peculiars of St. Margaret, Leicester, and Rothley and the Rutland Peculiars of Caldecott, Ketton and Tixover
Volume:   Index to Wills and Eldministrations Proved and Granted in The Elrchdeaconry Court of Leicester 1660-1750
Chapter:   1686.
Text:   1683 Stevenson, James, Lutterworth 63

Any advice on how to find what documents are associated with this record using FindMyPast? (or Ancestry even!)

Thanks,
David.

For nearly 15 years I have been working on my brick wall ancestor, my 4GG William Stevenson who according to the 1841,51 and 61 census was born c.1790 in Weston (by Welland?). On 5th Dec 1816 he married Sarah Spriggs at Cottingham and for years now ive been fruitlessly working away to no avail. I possibly have a best possible theory and thats about it, a further lineage based on detective work but no concrete evidence.

Going over my paperwork (again!) for the millionth time I cant quite help thinking "I must be missing something". Ive noticed a witness at Williams wedding called 'Elizabeth Reynolds', and the thought occurred to me that she might be related to William and not just a friend or relative of Sarah.

Is anyone able to help try and find her? All I have is her name as a witness. Dont know her age, place of birth or whether Reynolds is her maiden or married name. All I know is she turned up at Cottingham church on the 5th Dec 1816!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.
David.

Mary Jane Stevenson was born 1862/3 in Desborough daughter of John and Sarah. Can anyone shed any light on this please? Im sure she lived to her 100th birthday according to my grandad.

Any help would be appreciated.
