Wicklow / Place Names County Wicklow
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootchatters,  ;D :D,

I am having trouble  ???  identifying some place names in County Wicklow in a letter written in 1825 in NSW, Australia, and wondering if anyone could help me. I have attached a small portion of the letter (a memorial by a convict transported in 1821 from Ireland to the Governor of the colony, requesting the Governor of the Colony grant free passage of his wife and 5 children living in Co. Wicklow, to the Colony of NSW. In the second line from the bottom of the attachment is the name of where his family was living (?) and states near what looks to be Rathdrum.

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who can confirm this is "Rathdrum" or some other name and the name of the locality before the words "near Rath.....".

Many thanks in anticipation,

South Africa / O'Shea Brothers - Was This Photo Taken In South Africa?
« on: Friday 23 August 19 06:01 BST (UK)  »
 ;D Hello RootsChatters,

The photo attached is my husband's G G'F Thomas Joseph O'Shea (left) 1869-1954 and his brother Jeremiah 1864-1926, both born County Kerry, Ireland who emigrated with their family to NSW, Australia per ship "Norval" in 1880.

No one in the family knows where this photo was taken. Wondering if someone with more knowledge of Sth African photos from this era- 1895-1900 can verify its origin. Would be extremely grateful for any assistance,

Sincerely Pilgrims Progress  :D

Kerry / Shea/O'Shea Family of Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry Part 1 of 3
« on: Monday 19 August 19 10:04 BST (UK)  »
 ;D Hi Roots Chatterers,

Hoping someone can enlighten me, as how to interpret RC records from the Dingle Peninsula. These records concern the marriage of my husband's 2 x G'Parents Thomas Shea/O'Shea 1841-1910 and Ellen Mary O'Donnell 1842-? and their children who were baptised there between 1860 in 1873.

I am a little confused as to where they were living at this time as I had been led to believe they were living at Ballintaggert near Dingle but a number of records state Annascaul (one which had Ballintaggert in the last column).

I am more familiar with C of E records from England which can sometimes mislead a person's residence if they are a Bishop's Transcript record which tended to gather all parish records from the surrounding area without distinguishing the parish they came from. Was Annascaul  a major repository for records including those who may have been living in Ballitaggert at the time. NB I have a few records of the family that list the place of record as Ballanvohir which I understand is a variant of Annascaul. I understand that Ballintaggert was about 9-30 miles by road East of Annascaul.

I hope this makes sense of my confusion and ignorance to someone from the group. I would so much like to know where the O'Shea family were actually living. I have included some examples of the records.

Crossing my fingers someone will make head or tail of this.  ??? Many thanks.

Please note I have been unable to send all attachments -there will be a part 2 and 3.

Isle of Man / Localities of Ballaughton and Ballakermeen, Braddon, Isle of Man
« on: Monday 05 August 19 08:42 BST (UK)  »
Greetings RootsCahtters,

Could any kind member offer me some assistance with the history of these two places named on the Morrison family I am tracing in Braddon, Isle of Man from the 1840s to the 1890s.

In 1841 Census the Morrison family were listed living Ballaughton, Braddon with 5 or 6 other families. On a modern day map I can find a Ballaughton Close and nearby a Ballaughton Lane and a Ballaughton Manor Hill on a modern day map all leading off the New Castletown Rd.

In 1849 the Morrisons baptised a daughter Margaret Jane giving their abode as Ballakermeen, Braddon. On a modern day map I can see a Ballakermeen High School and nearby Ballakermeen Drive off the Peel Rd.

Were Ballaughton and Ballakermeen considered to be hamlets in that era 1840s which later became suburbs of Douglas? I have been unable to find references to this on the internet but would love to know more about these localities if anyone knows more.

Many thanks,
