Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Help with Beckett
« on: Monday 05 September 05 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any information about John and Eliza Beckett. They are the parents of Ann Maria born 1871 in Reading Berkshire. I have them in the 1881 census as confectioners in Surrey. John is born about 1840 and Eliza about 1843.

If anyone has access to census data before or after this it would be a great help.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1891 lookup Betsey Kidson
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 06:25 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a Betsey Kidson who was born in Wednesbury Stafford christened in Mar 1837 married age 19 in 1857. Can anyone help me locate her in 1891. She was living at 144 Blackfriars Rd,  Surrey, England during the 1881 census. Someone suggested she ended up in West Bromwich poorhouse but cannot find any references to confirm this. Her husband is John Kidson. Cannot locate him either but he may have died by this census date. I have no death record for him. John is 2 years older than Betsey and was born in Stoke Milbrow, Shropshire, England.
Thanks

England / Death at Sea
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 05:52 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I could find a record of deaths at sea. I have a g g grandfather who may have died at sea. His name is John Maxwell sometimes he goes under the name John Brown. I last have him at the birth of his daughter Ethel in 1882 at which time he was in the RMA as a gunner. Family legend has him dying on the Titanic (not likely too old) and in a Cyclone off America. Is there an online resource for finding his death? I cannot find him on free BMD or 1837online. Maybe someone else can! It appears he was born in Ireland - again no birth certificate info. He is listed on his 1881 marriage certificate as having a father Johnson Maxwell a farmer. I also found a John Brown in 1881 census that is said to be Irish. There is a Johnston Maxwell on Griffiths Evaluation who is a Farmer in Roscommon Ireland. Other than that He seems to have appeared from nowhere and disappeared again. I am not sure why he had the alias. He is 32 on his wedding certificate which makes his birth date about 1849. Hope someone wiser and more expert at this out there can help me. He is my only link to my name - Maxwell!!!!

By the way his wife was Mary Ann Kidson on wedding certificate but was born Mary Eliza Kidson. Married name both Mary Ann Brown, Mary Ann Maxwell and Mary Eliza Maxwell. Known as Molly. Died in Australia.

England / Did he vanish or skip town?
« on: Monday 08 August 05 03:23 BST (UK)  »
I have a g grandfather who was born in about 1849. His name is John Maxwell - possible Irish. Father is Johnston Maxwell a farmer. He married in 1881 under the name John brown and his wife changed her name from mary Eliza to Mary Ann. They had a daughter in 1882 and her birth certificate lists John Brown otherwise Maxwell as the father and Mary Ann Brown otherwise Maxwell formerly Kidson as the mother. He was a gunner in the royal marines. After daughter's (Ethel) birth I can not find him. In 1901 census Mum and daughter are staying at different residences as visitors. No John. I cannot find his death date. Family legend has him dying on the Titanic - fairly unlikely due to his age. Any ideas to help me with this tangle?

England / Obituary where can I find them?
« on: Monday 08 August 05 03:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find an obituary. It seems my g grandfather John Kidson was run over and killed trying to stop a runaway carriage in late 1800s. Can't find death date. They lived in Edmonton in 1861 and he was born about 1834. His wife was Betsey and he had three children. He is mentioned on marriage certificates in 1881 and in 1890 but cannot be found in 1881 census - so far. He may have been put on marriage certificates even though already dead! Any suggestions???
