Lancashire / Manchester Evening News Lookup Please
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Found my great grandma, Olive Burton, in the Manchester Evening News on Friday, April 17, 1942. She's being fined for (presumably) overcharging for a jar of jam but the transcription I can see contains a lot of gibberish. Would anyone be able to tell me how much she was selling her jam for and what the control price was? I think it says she was fined £10. Thanks!

Found this fascinating old photo in a box that belonged to my grandad (born in 1921 in Keighley, Yorkshire, with family from the Leeds/Bradford area). Can anyone shed any light on when it might have been taken?

I'm considering emailing the Local History department at Leeds library to see if they have any idea what might be going on here. I've tried googling the phrase on the banner to no avail.

The Common Room / Is he William, Humphrey, or Henry?
« on: Wednesday 27 July 22 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon all,

I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the patriarch of a family I'm researching who seems to keep changing his name between William, Humphrey, and Henry, as well as shifting his birthdate quite a bit. At no point is he listed with a middle name. I'm pretty certain this is the same guy throughout because the names and dates for his family all lineup but any insights anyone might have into what's going on and why the name changes would be much appreciated. This is what I have so far:

1851 Census - Uttoxeter
William Elsmore, b. 1813 Fradswell, Staffordshire (Farm Labourer)
Harriot Elsmore, b. 1825 Doveridge, Derbyshire
Salana, b. 1851 Kingstone, Staffordshire
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1851&indiv=try&h=8432175

There is another potential 1851 Census in Kingstone:
Humphry Elsmore, b. 1832 Kingstone, Staffs
Jane Elsmore, b. 1848 Kingstone Staffs
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1851&indiv=try&h=8431984

1861 Census - Manchester
Humphrey Helsmore, b. 1827 Blythebridge, Staffordshire (Farm Labourer)
Harriet Helsmore, b. 1826 Devirdge, Derbyshire
Jane, b. 1847 Staffs
Selina, b. 1851 Staffs
Harriet, b. 1853 Staffs
Ann, b. 1854 Staffs
George Hanna, b. 1860 Staffs
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/29659083?h=23da1a

1871 Census - Ancoats, Manchester
Henry Elsmore, b. 1831 Utoxeter (Labourer, Cotton Mill)
Harriet Elsmore, b. 1826 Uloxeter Dewridge
Selina, b. 1851 Utoxeter
Harriet, b. 1853 Chorlton, Shropshire
Ann, b. 1854 Chorlton, Shropshire
Georgina, b. 1861 Utoxeter, Staffs
Sarah Ellen, b. 1863 Manchester, Lancs
John Wm, b. 1868 Manchester Lancs
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/29659191?h=a6b3df

Found a marriage between a William Elsmore and a Harriet Wood in Uttoxeter on 1st December 1845 that seems to fit. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/4711329:9852

I've also found all the children on the GRO records with the mother's maiden name as Wood (Jane is Ward and Ann is Mood which feel like they could well be transcription errors.) Jane through Georgina (so 1847 - 1860) are all born in areas with the word Union in the name, either Uttoxeter Union or Wellington (Salop) Union so I don't know if there's a workhouse connection? The family moves to Manchester between 1860 and 1863 which is when he seems to change his name to Humphrey but he's still listed as William on some later records.

Found baptism/christening records for the following children with various names given for their father:
Jane - 1847 - William
Selina - 1851 - William
Harriet - 1852 - William
Ann - 1854 - William
Georgina - 1866 - Humphrey (they held off baptising her for 6 years)
Sarah Ellen - 1866 - Humphrey (held off for 3 years)

The daughter Harriet was baptised a second time as an adult in 1884 to convert to Catholocism, she gives her father's name as William but this is after his death because her mother appears as a widow on the 1881 census.

There's a marriage for a Selina Ellsmore of the right age in July 1872 with her father's name as William Ellsmore. Also a Catholic marriage for the daughter Harriet in 1884 where her father's name is listed as Gulielmo which I believe is a Latin form of William.

Am I missing something really obvious here? Is this two families who happen to have similar surnames and identically named kids? Is he changing his name to hide himself? I'm rather at a loss!

Census and Resource Discussion / Great Grandparents Missing on 1921 Census
« on: Wednesday 29 June 22 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to track down my great grandparents (William Henry Kirkpatrick born 1893 and Agnes Kirkpatrick born 1894) on the 1921 census and they both appear to be missing. I've tried all the usual tricks including using name variants and being as vague as possible with search terms and neither of them are showing up anywhere.

I've found their four-year-old daughter living at the family home with her paternal grandparents and a collection of aunts and uncles but no sign of her parents. According to William Henry's naval records, his last date of service was the 7th of June 1921, less than two weeks before the census date.  Part of me wonders if they could have gone away somewhere to celebrate but was that really the done thing back then and I know they were rather poor to be leaving the country?

Any suggestions about what else to try?

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Percy Sharpe
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon all,

I'm trying to confirm that a relative emigrated to Canada in 1923. I have a hint coming up on Ancestry for an Ocean Arrivals Form 30A that appears to match his details but I only have an Ancestry UK subscription so I can't see all the details. Would anyone be able to get me a copy of this one so I can try to confirm it's him?

If the link below doesn't work, details I can see for the document are:
Name   Percy Sharpe
Birth    abt 1899 Creastills York Eng
Arrival   10 Aug 1923 Quebec, Canada
Departure   1923 London, England

Many thanks in advance!

Armed Forces / Deciphering WWII Service Records
« on: Wednesday 11 December 19 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I have just received the WWII service records of my late grandad, thanks largely to help from people on these boards. I'm now looking for some help in deciphering them. I've uploaded the three pages we're struggling with, both in terms of handwriting and acronyms, in as large a size as possible.

Any help figuring all this out would be hugely appreciated.

Armed Forces / Uniform ID
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 15:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find some information about some relatives based on their uniforms and hoping someone here might be able to help.

My paternal grandad Kenneth Wilson Sharpe (set of four photos) born Keighley, 1921. Top left has "Poss Salerno" on the back and bottom right is noted as "Algiers 1944". I have additional photos of him including "Brennar Pass 1944", "Venice 1946", and "Austria 1946". My mum thinks she remembers being told he was a cook.

Edgar Sharpe (sitting) born Yorkshire 1897.

Henry Samuel Reade Kirkpatrick (portrait) born Manchester, 1868. This photo is dated 5th March 1919. I've been told he was in the Cheshire Regiment based on this photo but is there any other info that might be gleaned from it to help track him down? There's a lot of people named Henry Kirkpatrick based on my searches!

Thanks!

World War Two / MOD Can't Find Records
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 20:24 BST (UK)  »
Good evening all,

My mum is trying to track down the service record for her father, Fred Adshead, who served in WW2. She has applied to the MOD as next of kin using his death certificate and date of birth (we do not know his service number) but they have written back returning her cheque saying no such person could be found.

We have a couple of photos of him in uniform which I have attached, and my mum remembers him being referred to as Gunner Adshead. We also have his medals (Italy Star, Defence Medal, and 1939 - 1945 Star), and a 1945 diary with the word Ghivizzano in it and a note reading "eleven hundred guns, 986 rounds" but those may have been added years later as my mum's birthday is also recorded in the same diary and she wasn't born until 1950. Beyond that, we're getting into vague recollections such as he carried a hatred of Italy and always sent a Christmas card to someone in Singapore.

Is this the end of the road or are there other avenues we could explore to try and track down his service number or anything else that might help us?

Thank you.

Cheshire / Trying to read this institution(?) name
« on: Friday 17 August 12 01:17 BST (UK)  »
I think I may have located a relative on a ship heading to Canada, we know he was born in Stockport but had joined the Canadian Army by the age of 18. The name appears in a long list of 14 and 15 year old boys all sailing together and they seem to have all come from this same home. Can anyone work out what it is? I've attached an image of the original document.

Thank you.
