Channel Islands Lookup Requests / William BUTTON b. abt. 1805/6 Guernsey
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Helping a friend trace her family, but now hit a brick wall with this chap.
He enlisted in the British navy in 1825 and served until 1862 when he became a Greenwich Pensioner. His service record shows that he was 20 when he enlisted and was born in Guernsey.
He married Ann PARKER nee BURGE in 1849 in East Stonehouse, Devon (don't know if this was his 1st or 2nd marriage; it was Ann's 2nd).
Ann died in 1859 and William in 1872, both in Stoke Damerel, Devon. They had 2 daughters: Sarah Selena b. 1851 who m. Thomas WILLCOCKS  in 1873 in Devon, and Mary Louisa b. 1853. All 3  emigrated to South Australia between 1873 and 1878.
Can anyone help me find William's birth and/or baptism in Guernsey and his parents names please?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Guernsey Births
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 04:01 BST (UK)  »
Helping my sister-in-law track down her gggrandma Susannah EASON.b.c. 1830 Guernsey
In 1841 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales & FP with Wm. MARTIN bc 1816, his wife Mary b.c. 1795 - 1806 Donegal, Ireland & their 2 dtrs. [b. Cornwall] + Anne EASON b.c. 1821 Ireland & James EASON b.c. 1832 FP [also Guernsey].
Family moved to Penzance, Cornwall where Susannah m. 1850 John HOSKING.
Theory: Mary MARTIN much older than Wm. so was she previously mar. to Mr. EASON in Ireland , had Anne there, then moved to Cornwall or Guernsey & had Susannah & James? [can't find m. or b/ch in Ireland].
In 1851 James is recorded as Wm's son-in-law but was unm. so was he really his stepson?

Need anything earlier than 1841 please. Any help appreciated.  Peggy in SA

Census and Resource Discussion / Alfred BARTER b.c. 1858 - did he invent himself?
« on: Thursday 08 November 12 08:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am going round in circles & driving myself nuts over this man! Although an experienced researcher now helping a friend, I am really stuck.

We have a marriage cert. for Arthur BARTER b.abt. 1902 which gives his father as Alfred BARTER [deceased] a bootmaker & repairer.

I have found the family in the 1891, 1901 & 1911 censuses in London.

Alfred is recorded as b.abt. 1858 in Manchester, his wife Sarah was nee GIBSON, but no marriage record found for them so can't get his father's name.
{traced the GIBSONs to way back]

I can't find any b. regs. in Manchester or Lancashire & can't find him in 1861
to 1881 censuses. Some of the descendants ''feel'' he was a Londoner.

In desperation I created a spreadsheet listing all the census entries from 1861 - 1911 for all the Alfred BARTERs b. between 1854 - 1860 anywhere [sooo many mistranscriptions here] & cross-referenced them to b. m. & d. regs. & eliminated them all for various reasons, but I still can't find him.

Don't want to  spend money on getting heaps of certs so what do I do next???

Devon / UNDERDOWN family in S.E.Devon
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 03:27 GMT (UK)  »
The IGI has Charlotte UNDERDOWN ch. 1829, also her brother Emanuel ch. abt. 1827, parents  Emanuel & Elizabeth.

Charlotte is away from her family in 1841 (a servant age 12!!!) & there is only 1 couple in same census & in 1851 with her parents names:
1841 Stockland, Dorset: Emanuel b.abt. 1794 & Elizabeth b.abt. 1801 both in county, & living with 3 sons including Emanuel b.abt. 1827.

1851 Stockland, Devon: Emanuel b. 1789 Southleigh & Elizabeth 1796 Somerset.

I can't trace Emanuel & Elizabeth's marriage, nor pinpoint his parentage from the many UNDERDOWNs in the censuses. The IGI has several UNDERDOWNs, but none relevant & too few records to really help.

Plenty of possibilities, but no proof.

Can anyone help please?

(Charlotte m. William KENWOOD in 1850 & there are no UNDERDOWNs with her in any future censuses, nor any KENWOODs in any other UNDERDOWN household to give a cross reference clue.

Looking for the baptism of William BAZELEY b.abt. 1803 in Pattishall.

Think I found his marriage in 1828 to Isabella GREEN in Stow Nine Churches,
but confused as Turvey, Beds was mentioned rather than Northamptonshire.
Can anyone help clarify please?

Also baptism of Isabella b.abt. 1805 in Stow Nine churches.

All help appreciated,

Peggy in Oz.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Jersey look up
« on: Wednesday 11 August 10 13:15 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the birth reg. & parents (in fact anything) of:

1.  Daisy Edith ALLEZ b.7.6.1875-78 in Jersey. She married William Thomas NASH in Southampton in 1898. Her marriage entry in freebmd gives 3 different versions of her names, but she told her grand daughter it was definitely ALLEZ as it meant ''go'' in French.

2. Louisa Agnes BYNAM  b.abt. 1857 in St. Helier.  She married (Alfred) George GIBBS in Southampton in 1873.

Any help appreciated.

Australia / Wathen-Dunn in W.A.
« on: Friday 15 August 08 06:16 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find out more about the descendants of brothers Kenneth Wathen DUNN b.abt. 1870 & Edward Wathen DUNN b.abt. 1874 in Trowbridge, Wilts, England. They emigrated about 1890, married in or around Perth & had several children in the early 1900s. (I have marriage for both + birth records for 6 children). The brothers were grandsons of Thomas Plummer DUNN & Margaret Peach WATHEN.

I believe a descendant of one the brothers, another Kenneth Wathen DUNN (or maybe he had assumed the hyphenated surname WATHEN-DUNN by this time) was a politician & represented the Darling Range, W.A. from 1962- 1971.

I have a recent WATHEN-DUNN contact in the U.S.A. who is descended from a 3rd brother, & we would be interested to hear from anyone that can shed any light on this family please.

Thanks, Welshlass in S.A.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Davies family, Shrewsbury
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 10:18 BST (UK)  »
My gggrandmother was Sarah nee PAYNE b. 1864 Welshpool.
She 1st married Shrewsbury 1884 -Thomas DAVIES (b.abt. 1850 Welshpool), son of Edward DAVIES.
They had 5 children, but they didn't stay together for long.
The 1891 St.Chad, Shrewsbury census shows 3 of the children with their parents (Sissy b.abt. 1885 Shrewsbury; John b.abt. 1887 Rugby, & Edith b.abt. 1888 Shrewsbury).
In 1891 (Welshpool) another child,Thomas b.abt. 1886 Rugby was with his grandparents John & Sarah PAYNE, &,
In 1901  (Welshpool) John was in their household but Thomas had left.

A 5th child,  Amy (k/a Louise) b.19.2.1889 Shrewsbury has yet to be found for certain, but in 1901 (Atcham) there is an Amy DAVIES (relationship niece) in the household of George & Mary FEWTRELL (this name/relationship is unknown to me).

Sarah DAVIES (nee PAYNE) was with my gggrandfather in Cardiff by 1901 & later married him. None of the DAVIES children remained with her, however,
Amy (my great aunt Lou) lived with them later in her life & I have her birth & marriage certs.

Because DAVIES is such a common name I am having great difficulty finding
the birth registrations for 4 of the children

My questions/requests:

* is there a known/usual name for the nickname Sissy in Shropshire?

* can anyone find these 'missing'' 4 on any other censuses please?

* if so, did any of them have a 2nd initial/name that would help identify them?

Peggy,
Welshlass in Oz
