Cornwall / COCKS family - THE ISLAND, NEWQUAY
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
Chatting with my mum, she remembers my Great Granny & her cousin, Lena, travelling by train to Newquay once a year to visit cousins who lived on The Island at Newquay. Previously we were unsure of their surname & had been searching for the wrong one - but I had a breakthrough this week - we discovered they were called William Morley COCKS (known as Morley) & Annie (nee Berryman). Annie was a first cousin to my Great Granny. Mum thinks that their son was called Edgar , & in turn his wife was called 'Carrie' - I found a marriage for John Edgar Roy COCKS & & Catherine A McCallum in 1954. I think that Morley & Annie may also have had a son called Peter COCKS.

If there is anyone out there whocan help me find out anything about this family, I would be fascinated to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Cornwall / NEWQUAY - The Island - 'Edgar & Carrie' ( HOCKING ? ?)
« on: Monday 14 March 11 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
Chatting with my mum, she remembers  my Great Granny & her cousin, Lena, travelling by train to Newquay once a year to visit cousins who lived on The Island at Newquay. Mum remembers that they were called Edgar & Carrie - but has no recollection of their surname. I have been puzzling over who they were & how they were related to my Great Granny, but so far I have not had any luck.

If there is anyone out there who either knew them, or who can point me in the right direction to finding out who they were, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks.
James

Postscript: Just read this to Mum - she now thinks the surname could have been 'HOCKING' - this would make sense as one of my Great Granny's aunts, Mary Jane Berryman married a Thomas Hocking - however, it would be useful to be able to confirm whether or not they had a son called Edgar - looking at the BMD index, there is a birth record of an Edgar Hocking  born in 1877 - but I don't think this was him (Mary Jane and Thomas weren't until married 29 Oct of  that year) - maybe the census records might show some light on this matter ... from what mum has told me, I got the feeling that he was nearer my Great Granny's age, and she was born in 1899.

Post - Postscript : Just found BMD index entry for an Edgar Hocking born 1909 - would be interesting to see if he turns up on a census.

Cornwall / MENEAR ( MANNEAR ) family St Dennis
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 12:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered (thanks to Rootschat members) that one of my ancestors was called Jenefer Menear - she married John Honey 26 July 1823 at St Dennis . I believe she was the daughter of Peter & Julia Menear.
As yet, i don't know Julia's maiden name , or if she had any siblings.
If anyone else has any information on the Menears from St Dennis, I'd be interested to hear from them.
Thank you.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / St Dennis Baptisms - HONEY
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x Great Grandfather was John Honey - born in St Dennis c. 1823 - his father's name was also John Honey.
If anyone could check St Dennis baptisms for me for John Honey junior's baptism entry, I'd be very grateful, as it will hopefully give me his mother's name.
Many thanks.

Derbyshire / BARACLOUGH or BARRACLOUGH family, DRONFIELD, DERBYSHIRE
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to research the family of Arthur (b c. 1851) & Annie ( b.c. 1849)  Baraclough. He was born in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, and she was born in Lancashire. As yet, I have not been able to unearth Annie's maiden name, or anything about her family. i have seen the surname spelt with one and two 'R's.

The couple lived in Sheffield Road, Dronfield, Derbyshire, and it was here that there children were born. The children included:
Cecily Annie L    b 1881 Dronfield
Arthur    b 1882 Dronfield
Percy Edward  b 1883 Dronfield
Colin Vere   b 1886   Dronfield
Mary M    b 1889    Dronfield

I know that Percy Edward Baraclough emigrated to British Columbia, where he married - but , as yet, I do not know if the couple had any children.

I am interested to find out anything further about Percy Edward Baraclough's siblings and their families, or to discover anything more about their parents' families.
Thanks.

Derbyshire / Roper Smith (or Smith ) family , Chesterfield
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about the family of Ada Roper Smith born 1884 in Chesterfield. She was the daughter of George Roper Smith & his wife Mary. From  censuses, I have discovered that Ada's siblings were :
John Roper Smith b 1865 Horsley Woodhouse, Derbyshire (later married an Ada)
Arthur Roper Smith b 1868 Chesterfield
George Roper Smith b 1872 Chesterfield
William Roper Smith b 1875 Chesterfield
Harriet Roper Smith b 1876 Chesterfield
James Roper Smith b 1879 Chesterfield
Ethel M. F Roper Smith b 1881 Chesterfield
and Ada Roper Smith, herself was b 1884 Chesterfield.

It appears that the family did not always have the 'Roper'  name in use, and I have found a birth index entry for Ethel M. F. Smith with no mention of the Roper name at all.

I would be interested in finding out about the families of Ada's siblings, or of any of her ancestors. So far her mother's maiden name has evaded my searches _ I know that she, Mary, was born in Horsley Woodhouse, Derbyshire  c. 1840 , whilst her husband, George was born in Castle Donington, Leicestershire,c. 1842.

I would also be thrilled to hear from anyone descended from any of Ada's siblings.
Thanks.

Surrey / JOSEPH GROOM - Thames Ditton
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was Joseph Groom - a blacksmith, who spent most of his life in Sherington/Newport Pagnell - however the 1851 census shows that he was born in Thames Ditton around 1821 - I am interested to find out about his family back in Thames Ditton - if anyone should come across his baptism record or any details of the Groom family, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Thanks.

Buckinghamshire / BRENCH family - Slough area
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 23:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching BRENCH ancestors from the SLOUGH area, but am having difficulties tracking down records of their births/marriages.

Florence Kate Brench was born in 1906 - I have her birth certificate - which lists her parents as William BRENCH and Minnie (nee IVES)
 - and their address at that time was listed as being in Stoke Gardens, Slough.

Revised part of message:

William Brench was born in Rugby, but his family originated from Buckinghamshire.

That is all I know at the moment - if anyone can help add some meat to the bones, I'd be very grateful, as this is one of  my families that I know least about.

Many thanks!

London and Middlesex / William GROOM - farrier - Earls Court
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about one of my ancestors, William Groom. I  have his marriage certificate, which shows that he was born c. 1887, and at the time of his marriage to Louisa m. Dring in May 1911 (Kensington Register Office), he was a farrier, and living at 11 Walgrave Road, Earls Court, London.

I am trying to find out about his family - such as if he had any siblings - the name of his mother, etc.

I know that his father's name was Thomas Groom, who was also a farrier - I would be interested to learn anything about Thomas's family - his parents, if he had any brothers and sisters (& who they married).

I fanyone should come across anything that might prove useful, i would be thrilled to hear from you!
Many thanks!
James
