Armed Forces / Medal Roll help please - 2nd Boer War
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have just located an ancestor of mine in the medal rolls for the Second Boer War on ancestry, and being a complete military novice I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding it - I would be really grateful if somebody could explain it to me!

He is Pte H Bailey - regimental number 5024 of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment

There are 3 documents on ancestry. One has 23rd M.I Coy in the top corner, another has 2nd Battalion Kings own R.L Regiment. Was one a group within the other? In the second document, he seems to have been crossed off the list -  there is a line through his name and details, and in the remarks column there is a word I can't read and a date 5/01 - is this the date when he arrived in South Africa? The third document just seems to be a copy of the first.

He was invalided on 7/11/02, would this have been the date he was injured, or the date he was sent home from duty?

Many thanks in advance,
millerina  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with witness surname please..
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anybody able to make out the surname of the witness in the bottom left hand corner - C. R ??? The other witness are F.B Walsh, C.L Miller and W.G Walsh.

I have two copies of this certificate - one from the GRO, and then a few years later we found the copy of the original given at the time of the marriage (1945) - but am I right in thinking that the GRO one is not a scan of the original entry in the parish register? The old copy that we have has more information on it, but a few corrected errors - would this have been filled in by somebody at the church?

Many thanks,
millerina

Hi,

Please could somebody have a look in the 1841 and 1851 census' for:

Sarah Churchill  b.1835 Bloomsbury, London.

I have just received her marriage cert from 1856, and it says her father was Henry Churchill, a Coster-Monger. At the time she was living at Union Place in Shoreditch. One of the witnesses is an Isabella Churchill, so I'm hoping she might turn up living with the family!

Hope this is enough information to go on, I'm really looking forward to finding out more about this new branch of my tree! :)

Many thanks in advance,
millerina

The Common Room / Cause of death help please..
« on: Monday 13 October 08 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody able to make out what is written in the line under "Pneumonia 7 days" ?  ???

I'm not sure, but the second word looks a little bit like "Incompetence" to me, but what does that term mean as a cause of death??

I'd be really grateful for your ideas!

Please can somebody have a look for this family in the 1901 census, I have spent so many hours looking for them with no luck, they just seem to have completely vanished!  :( ::)

Benjamin John Bulley b.1848 Romford Essex (He was a Widower in 1901) - he died in 1913.

and his children:

Harrison Bulley b.1875 St Pancras
Eliza Alice Bulley b.1877 St Pancras (She turns up in Ely, Cambs in 1903)
Margaret Rosetta (also known as Rose) Bulley b.1880 St Pancras

also:
Henry (or Harry) Bulley b.1846 Romford Essex

In 1891 they were all living in Upper North Street, Islington, Thornhill Ward.
I have an address for them in 1896 as 63 North Street, All Saints Battlebridge, Kings Cross - and in 1904 I have 61 North Street as their address (both from marriage certs).

I would be so grateful if anybody could spot even just one of these people!  :)

Many thanks in advance,
millerina

Please could somebody have a look for:

Frances Blake b.1850 in the Bethnal Green area

On her marriage cert from 1877 it says her father was called George Blake, a Mariner - and her mother may have been called Jane (from an IGI entry).

They should hopefully be found somewhere in the Bethnal Green area?

Many thanks,
