Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Help please - where is (or was) this? COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 27 February 13 19:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

My mother passed away last week and I am now going through her extensive collection of photographs, mostly from the 1950s and mostly taken at locations which can be established quite easily. One small set of seaside snaps however has me stumped. I'm led to believe they were taken at a Welsh resort, and I hope the image linked to below will be easily recognised by some kind soul who can tell me where the pic was taken.

The image can be viewed here: http://www.atcherley.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/mystery.jpg

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Shropshire / Waters Upton Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 17:07 BST (UK)  »
Over the relatively short time that I have been researching family history, I have benefited enormously from the efforts of those amazing volunteers who have given up their time to transcribe records of various descriptions. During my recent stay in Shrewsbury I found the Monumental Inscription (or MI) transcriptions deposited at Shropshire Archives particularly helpful and would like to place on record my thanks to all those involved in their production.

In an attempt to give a little back to the family history community from which I have taken so much, while I was at Waters Upton St Michael's I decided to photograph all the stones with legible inscriptions (not just the one that was of interest to me). My intention was to transcribe the inscriptions and put that data online at Find A Grave, along with the photos (enhanced to make the inscriptions on them as legible as possible). This I have now done, and a bit more besides, as I could not resist trying to find out more about the people whose deaths were commemorated. The inscriptions and photos are therefore accompanied by further information such as census, parish register and probate data.

The surnames on the stones (and the maiden names of the married women where I have been able to find them) are:

Ball - Arthur, Charlotte, Emma, John, Sarah (Cureton).

Beaman - Emma (Gregory), Richard.

Blantern - John, Mary Ann (Slack), Robert.

Buttery - Elizabeth Beatrice.

Cornes - Joseph.

Cureton - Elizabeth (Buttrey), Thomas.

Davies - Andrew Taylor, Annie May, Admiral Sir Arthur John, Rev. John Bayley, Marjorie Eileen, Susan Anslow (Juckes).

Dickin - William.

Dulson - Ann (BIshton), Charles.

Fisk - Annie (Waring), Thomas.

Foulkes/Foulks - Mary Ann (formerly Martin, maiden name not known).

Gregory - James.

Hobson - John, Rev. Samuel.

Hyde - Margaret.

James - Joseph.

Jenkins - Elizabeth, John, Jane (Evans).

Jones - Joseph.

Lawrence - Ann Britton (Meredith).

Martin - Edith Amy, Elizabeth, Jane, John.

Matthews - Ann, John, William.

Meredith - Martha.

Morgan - Arthur, George, Sarah, William.

Owen - John.

Pascall - Sarah.

Rawlings - John, Sarah.

Rider - John, Sarah (Tennant).

Ridgway - Alfred, Ann (Jones), Harriet Mayne (Knott), Janes, Sarah Ann (Woolley).

Swinnerton - Mary Ann (Blantern).

Titley - John, Mary (Atcherley).

Tompkin - Robert.

Walker - Ann.

Woolley - Mary (Pascall), Richard, Robert.

Wylde - John, Lucy (Strefford).

I hope some of this will be of use or interest to someone, somewhere!

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Baptism, Wing, abt 1777: Thomas COBB
« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 18:54 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Cobb appears on the 1851 census at Eaton Bray in Bedfordshire, age 74, born Wing, Buckinghamshire. I am hoping that someone has access to Wing parish registers (or transcripts thereof) and can check for his baptism around 1777 (and maybe any siblings before and after?).

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Steve

According to the IGI, Thomas COBB married Sarah HUMBLES at Eaton Bray on 27 Jul 1818. I'm trying to establish whether or not this was the same Thomas Cobb who married Ann READ at Eaton Bray on 20 Oct 1803 (did Ann pass away and did Thomas re-marry?).

I'm hoping that someone will have access to the Eaton Bray registers and can look up the Cobb-Humbles marriage and post the details - particularly the details of the Thomas' status at the time of the marriage, i.e. bachelor or widower (if shown).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

Having located the baptism of Sidney Jones (thanks to wilcoxon) I am now looking for something which may prove a bit trickier, the marriage of her parents.

Thomas Jones, a labourer, was born around 1809 (based on ages of 42, 52 and 62 given on the 1851, 61 and 71 census returns). While Thomas was consistent with his age, he was less so with his place of birth. In 1851 he said he was from Gresford, near Wrexham, in 1861 he said Mold, Flintshire, and in 1871 he said Chester! I'm discounting Chester altogether (he had been living there for over 10 years by 1871).

Martha was born around 1806 (ages given as 44, 55 and 54 in 1851, 61 and 71). Although her birthplace was also given as Chester in 1871 this I believe is erroneous; in 1851 and 61 she stated Holt in Denbighshire.

I'm guessing that Thomas and Martha married in Holt or maybe Wrexham or somewhere very close by, in the 1830ish-1834 period (their daughter Sidney being baptised at Marchwiel in Jan 1835 and later children also born in that area).

If anyone is able to locate the marriage and post the details I'd be very grateful, but I do appreciate that this may be a challenge too far.

Thanks,

Steve

Sidney Jones married Robert Edwards in the parish church at Chester St Mary on 24 Jun 1855. Her age was given as 20 and her father was named as Thomas Jones, a labourer. It appears that she spent the rest of of her life in Chester and although one census shows she was born there, others indicate that she was born at Wrexham. I gather that many parts of the 1841 census for the Wrexham area are lost and this would explain why I've not found her on that census. I think I have found her on the 1851 census at Gwersyllt in the parish of Gresford near Wrexham, with Thomas (42, born Gresford) and Martha (44, born Holt, on the border with Cheshire) Jones and their sons Thomas (12, born Marchwiel), Charles (10, born Wrexham) and Henry (3, born Wrexham). Ancestry's transcription has Sidney as Thomas and Martha's  niece, but looking at the image I think that Sidney was in fact their daughter (piece 2502, folio 236, page 13). Her birth place is given as Marchwiel.

Would it be possible for someone to locate a baptism for Sidney, presumably in 1835 or 1836 (ish) either at Marchwiel or Wrexham?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

I would grateful if someone with access to the Northampton Burials Index could look up the following for me please:

Jane SPOKES, died 1856.

Henry BIRCH, died between 1830 and 1847 (most likely between 1834 and 1841).

Joseph BIRCH, died 1897.

James BIRCH, died 1888.

Many thanks,

Steve

George Kilsby was born around 1800 and was buried on 13 Sep 1830 at Daventry. He and his wife Temperance (born around 1798 in Whitfield, Northants) had at least two children, both baptised in Daventry: Ann (bap. 4 May 1827) and George (bap. 15 May 1829). But where and when did George and Temperance marry, and what was Temperance's maiden name?

I'd be grateful if someone could find their marriage in the NMI and post the details.

Many thanks,

Steve
