The Common Room / Professional photos
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 06:00 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with a query I have.

Did professional photographers (about 1895 to 1905) have clothes, hats and other props in their studios for the sitters to wear?

Also I have seen a photo with husband and wife with an empty seat between them with an open book on the table in front of the empty seat.  Is there any significance in the open book or in fact, the empty seat?

Any thoughts?

Australia / What is this cloth badge?
« on: Monday 08 May 17 22:44 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with this cloth badge, please?   It was amongst an aunt's collection of photos and other family items, which go from about 1901 to 1988 and not in any particular order.

Is it something to do with the armed services - wings, anchor and sun and maybe Legacy? It is approximately 7cm square.

Any help will be appreciated.

Australia / National Library of Australia - email re card needing renewal
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 08:39 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone else got an email from the National Library saying that their card needs renewing?  It gives a reasonable web address and asks you to fill in a blank form.

I didn't click on the link.    Is this a scam of some sort or is it OK ?

I have found the following in the New York Death Newspaper extracts 1801-1890 (Barber collection):
This was typed and is complete.

Friday 17 Feb 1843:
Thursday. Staten Island. Capt Alex'r Thompson in 75y son in law William Irving Alsop 30 Beach St
----
I have also found that Alexander Thompson was buried in the Trinity cemetery, Manhattan.

To confirm that this is the Alexander Thompson I am after, I have to find out more on William Irving Alsop.

Can anyone help please?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Owner of ships in 1840s and 1850s
« on: Monday 27 June 16 20:43 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking into the record of a sea captain, William C Thompson, who was born in Ireland but followed his father to America.  He eventually became captain of several ships, most of which carried mail between Liverpool and New York and sailed under the American flag.

On his statement of service for his Master’s Certificate in 1857, he gave details of the various ships he had served on during his 40 years at sea, with the last two entries being:

Dec 1846 to  Dec 1852 (crossed out and 1853 added) :  Ship: "Sarah Sands"; Port of Liverpool;  Captain (7 years)
Oct 1854 to Aug 1857: Ship: "Pacific", Port of London; Captain (3 years)
(Note on record: These vessels are Iron Steamers built by me and I am the principal owner.)
---------
I have not been able to confirm the ownership of these two ships, except that there was an article in the “Liverpool Mercury” of 14 August 1846 which stated that the “Sarah Sands” was launched. In summary, it said - Owned by Messrs Thomas and Joseph Sands and Co.  Description.  Named after Mrs Sands.
---------
Both these ships did runs between Liverpool and New York, with each doing at least one trip to Australia, and both being fitted out to transport troops to the Crimea.

My question is:   How can I confirm the owner/s of these ships?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Sea captain's record
« on: Sunday 26 June 16 20:24 BST (UK)  »
This is from a sea captain's record in 1857.  It shows the names of the ships on which he served.

The first note reads: "These vessels were under the American flag".

The second one says: "These vessels were Packets between Lpool and New York carrying mails".

The third one is my problem:  "These vessels are Iron Steamers built by ......"

Any suggestions are welcome.
