The Common Room / The Fate of Family history research when we die
« on: Thursday 31 October 19 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
Good Evening

No one wants to think about their own demise but sooner or later one we have to consider the question of what happens to all the hard work and researches when they pass on.

I have been asked to find a fitting home for the researches of a lady who has passed away as there are no family members wishing to continue her work.
The work is not currently online and was created before digital researching. It is beautifully presented with large drawn trees and all the supporting documents.
I would like to honour this ladies work and am trying to find a way that access can be given to this material.

Any ideas would be gratefully received

Many thanks

Sue

Hello
I would like to apply to the MOD for my Grandfather's Second World War Uk service record. The problem I have, is to work out which of the three services he served in ie Army, Navy or RAF.

I do not have any photographs of my Grandfather in uniform. My father once told me my Grandfather's job was to help build landing strips/runways which would fit as he drove a steamroller as a civilian occupation. I believe he had to carry out this work in the most adverse of circumstances.

Would this be something the Army would have undertaken, I am thinking of Royal Engineers or Pioneer Corp or would the RAF have done this?

Any help would be much appreciated as I am not sure if I can obtain the service records otherwise.

Many thanks in anticipation

kind wishes

Canada Lookup Request / Obituary for death in Montreal look up please
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I wonder if anyone could kindly look to see if there were any obituaries in any Montreal newspapers or know of any websites I could try for the following people. They had lived at 7377 Rue Drolet

Ada Quinn nee Fitzgerald died 8 June 1978 widow of Edward Hamilton Quinn

Edward John Fitzgerald died 1 October 1974 - brother of Ada

Edward Hamilton Quinn died 30 March 1939 ( he had been previously married to Mary Ellen Cleary who died pre 1911)

My aim ultimately is to try to find out if Ada and Edward Quinn had any children.

I know they are all buried in Mount Royal Cemetery

Any information gratefully received

kind wishes and thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Help to find a Post 1949 death in Ontario
« on: Wednesday 30 November 16 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I hope some kind soul can help if only with advice on how to trace the death and family of
Arthur Montague who died sometime after 1949.

Arthur was born in Cinderford Glos  UK in 1870 as Arthur Weaver. He departed from Liverpool in October 1911 with his wife's sister Clementina arriving in Canada aboard the Victorian around 6 November 1911.

I can find him on the 1921 census living with his wife and son Arthur V Montague born 1917 and daughter Dorothy J Montague born 1919.

The Voters lists show him up until 1949 where he was living in Grant Ave East Kent County Ontario.

I can trace Clementina up to 1957 living Haig Avenue Danforth Toronto with her daughter Dorothy with her son Arthur V and his wife Evelyn living a few houses down the road.

In 1958 Arthur V Montague and his wife Evelyn are living in Jameson Ave Parkdale Toronto but Clementina is not listed. Dorothy is not listed possibly because she has married.

Not having a clear view of Canadian records I am somewhat out of my depth. I am struggling with cemetery records as these seem patchy and the same with newspapers. I wonder if anyone can offer ideas of where I should contact to be able to get newspapers searched for an obituary.

It has taken years to find Arthur Weaver after he abandoned his wife and family who were living in Poole England and find sufficient evidence for the name change and now I am at a brick wall again trying to search down the generations to find possibly living family.

Any advice would be appreciated.

kind thanks in anticipation

The Common Room / Look up Request for a UK Death at Sea record Please
« on: Monday 03 August 15 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Please could a kind soul   look up a Death at sea between 1901 and 1907 - I suspect nearer to 1901 for Richard Hitchcock. He was born 1867 and lived in Lyme Regis Dorset. I believe he was a Mariner.

Findmypast have the indexes. I have just stopped using them as I decided a subscription to British Newspaper Archive would be more useful and also I kept my Ancestry sub but unfortunately they do not have these records.

If I can be any assistance in return I would be happy to help

Best wishes

Sue

World War One / Moving Regiment in WW1
« on: Monday 06 December 10 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
My Grandfather William Sydney Davies volunteered in Dec 1915 and joined the Civil Service Rifles 1/ 15 Division. I know he saw action in the Somme. By November 1916 he was part of the London 22nd Regiment and had been shipped to the Middle East - Cairo etc where he ended the war.

Was this normal for soldiers to move between regiments - as my Grandfather was a Civil Servant i find it odd he did not stay with his comrades. Unfortunately his service record is burnt with many others and the only thing that is known from his service is that he had suffered from " Trench Foot". Would this have been sufficient to see him transferred to the Desert. I know he was in Cairo as I have a photo supporting this.

Any ideas - gratefully received

kind regards

World War Two / Operation Mincement - Glyndwr Michael
« on: Monday 06 December 10 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
This is not a family history enquiry - well not my family but I have been pondering on the point since watching a documentary about Operation Mincemeat last night aka " The Man who never was"

Essentially my question is this - Glyndwr Michael by all accounts lead a deprived life coming from Aberbargoed in Wales. It seems both his parents had predeceased him and he found his way to London and died of Rat poison as a homeless person. By any standards he had had a terrible life.
Major Bill Martin who Glyndwr Michael's copse masqueraded as - was a an Officer, Gentleman and a Royal Marine. Surely the life lead by Glyndwr Michael would not have presented the body of Bill Martin. I am thinking a Marine would be muscular and signs of a life from poverty would have been evident.
The name Glyndwr Michael was found in records released by the National Archives some years back. I wonder if this was a double deception - the name being deliberately planted to throw researchers off the track.

What does anyone think?

Interested to hear

Sue
