The Common Room / horse dealer
« on: Friday 08 October 10 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I have failed miseably to find anything about my gt grandfather and my grandfather in his younger days. My gt grandfather was a horse dealer and an elderly man told me this week that horse dealers went from town to town selling their horses - which explains the absence from records and the fact that on the 1913 marriage certificate my grandfather was unable to write his name. I was also told that horse dealers were normally gypsies but not always. The name I'm researching is Warner and my grandfather was , I think , born in Oxfordshire ( but I haven't pinned him down). Has anyone any suggestions where I can go from here please?

Devon / Royal Navy Training Ship
« on: Friday 12 February 10 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi , I have papers showing my gt grandfather's brother Henry Forse signed up for 10 years in the Royal Navy on 31 January 1867 , at the age of 16 , first going for training on the Impregnable before beginning his 10 year service on 10 Feb 1869 , his 18th birthday. However in 1871 Henry is at his parents home in Exeter and his occupation given as unemployed seaman. So what happened? Did he desert? Was he thrown out for any reason ? Henry ( born 1851 in Bradninch Devon) appears to disappear at this point and I wonder can anyone tell me if there is anywhere I can find more about him after he joined up?

Lancashire / Ellen ( Nellie) McGhie
« on: Thursday 04 February 10 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Ellen McGhie , known as Nellie , was born in the September quarter of 1903 in Salford Lancs. Records show she married Bert Moons in the September quarter of 1917 when she was only 14. I assume it would have been illegal. What would have happened to them if they were found out? I have yet to discover anything about Bert.

The third son Richard Francis married Elizabeth Harries and by 1901 they had children Mary , Edith , Charles and Ernest. Thomas and Sarah had 2 daughters Harriet born 1868 and Maryanne born 1870 in Stockport and a son Thomas Henry who died in infancy in 1872.
