Australia / Edith Agnes FLETCHER
« on: Friday 08 March 19 09:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all. This is a complete shot in the dark but here goes.
My great aunt Edith Agnes FLETCHER was born in 1901 in Newport, Shropshire, England. Family lore has it that she emigrated to Australia, probably some time in the 1920s. There's a suggestion that she may have married before she left England so may have travelled under a different surname. I believe that members of her family in Australia may have made enquiries in Shropshire some years ago but the people they spoke to couldn't help them.
Any information gratefully received, thank you.

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Life and death in Salop Mental Hospital
« on: Friday 22 March 13 17:44 GMT (UK)  »
One of my relatives died in 1937 in Salop Mental Hospital. Does anyone have any information about this place, and are there any records of patients? I think she was probably there from about 1913 until her death. In the 1901 census she's described as an Imbecile, and lived with her mother. My guess is that when her mother died there was nowhere else for her to go.  :(

Hi all

From the clothes, hairstyles etc. can anyone identify approx. when this photo was taken, and the likely social status of the couple? It was printed from a glass plate. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

Can anyone tell me which local newspapers for the Wellington area existed in the 1880s, and how to access their archives. Thanks

Shropshire Lookup Requests / 1901 Look up Clara Woolley
« on: Monday 05 January 09 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm looking for Clara Woolley/Wooley and her family, who lived in Booths Cottages, Priorslee (Shifnal district). Her parents are George and Sarah. There should be several children listed in 1901, but I'm a bit confused about Clara as I can't find a birth record for her. But she gave birth to George in 1912, and in 1927 married Philip Blocksidge and in 1929 had a daughter, Dorothy. I can find a birth record for Fanny in 1890, and wonder if Fanny and Clara are the same person.
If anyone can give me a list of family members in 1901 that might help.

Thanks in advance.

Shropshire / Where is Mumpern Hill?
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 14:06 GMT (UK)  »
I've got a marriage certificate for my ggg grandfather and mother, John Picken and Honour Lloyd. They were married in Shifnal parish church in August 1837 and both give their residence as Mumpern Hill. I was born and raised in Shifnal and have never heard of it, and neither has my mother. Does anyone know where it is, or was?

Thanks

Australia Lookups completed / Edith Fletcher
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 14:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I believe that my grandmother's sister, Edith Fletcher, married and emigrated to Australia, but I have no other details. I think she was born Edith Agnes Fletcher in 1901 in Newport Shropshire, so I guess she would have married about 1920. But I don't know the name of her husband or where in Australia she went. Can anyone help me to find more information? I haven't been able to find a marriage for her in the Newport district but I suppose she could have married anywhere in the UK. Her parents were Edward and Emma Fletcher and they lived in Donnington Wood Shropshire.

Thanks

Staffordshire / Death/inquest query 1853 Wolverhampton
« on: Thursday 03 January 08 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have the death certificate of my ggggrandfather Thomas Horton. It says that he was found dead in Church Lane Wolverhampton (sub-district West Wolverhampton) on 13 June 1853, aged 35. The strange thing is, though, that his death was not registered until 17 August of that year, the informant being the coroner. Does anyone know how unusual this is, and why the delay might have been so long? I thought there was a legal requirement to register a death within a certain number of days. I wonder if there is a mistake on the certificate.

Does anyone have access to burial records for that year? On the record his middle name might be given as Vincent.

Thanks
