Down / Deans/Dines and Geddes, Killinchy
« on: Saturday 30 March 24 20:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hugh Dines (Deans) and Margaret Geddes were my 3rd Great Grandparents, they married 17.11.1838 in Killinchy and moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland by c1851 where their 4th daughter Jessie Deans was born (based on census records).

They had 4 daughters that I know of Elizabeth c1840, Margaret c1843 and my 2nd great grandmother Jane c1845.

I have Hugh's parents as William Deans and Margaret Thomson (from his Scottish death certificate in 1884) and only have Felix Geddes as the father of Margaret.

Do these names ring a bell for anyone?

Lanarkshire / Can anyone help identify this soldier please? WW2
« on: Monday 06 July 20 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Someone posted a picture on a local history Facebook page for Shotts and is looking to return it to any family out there.

There is information written on the back that seems to refer to 2 different soldiers - I've been able to find the details for the soldier listed as being buried at Anzio - 2nd Lt. Black.

The other details are bringing up a blank though - is there anyone who can find out more about the individual concerned please?

Kind Regards

Tracey

Lanarkshire / James Devine WW1 Medal - trying to return it to the family!
« on: Friday 19 April 19 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My late step-father found a WW1 medal and we would like to find the family to return it to them - he found it metal-detecting but we don't know where or when :(

It was for 3396 Private James Devine, Scots Rifles. He died 2nd/3rd August 1916 in France. Ancestry shows his father received his effects as James was single when he died.

From looking at the 1911 Census they were living in Ferguson Street, Motherwell and James was an apprentice baker.

1911 DEVINE, JAMES (Census 639/ 22/ 17) Page 17 of 29

William       52 b Carluke
Jane L        52 b Lanark (initial is possibly Lang)
Daniel        21 b Glasgow
James        17 b Glasgow
Janet          15 b Glasgow
Jeanie         13 b Glasgow

Can anyone help us track down any relatives for this soldier so that we can pass the medal back to the family?

A newspaper article said he was killed on his 23rd birthday so he would have been born August 1893. The article (my brother saw this) stated the family lived in Dellburn Street, Motherwell.
His birth was 3/8/1893 in Mathieson St, Glasgow and his parents marriage was 3/9/1884 in Hamilton.

All help greatly accepted!

Scotland / Pte James Hunter Argyll & Suth Highlanders And Machine Gun Corps
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Pte James Hunter 3817 Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and also 139683 Machine Gun Corps

Trying to track down details of this WW1 soldier. He was in two different regiments (according to his medal record on Ancestry) but cannot seem to get any further details on him. A Victory Medal given to him for WW1 was found in the 1980s in Tullibody - I don't know any more than that, and it's hoped that his family can be traced and the medal returned to them.

Can anyone help any further with this?

Scotland / Church of Scotland Widow's and Orphan's Fund Records at the NAS
« on: Sunday 09 June 13 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Has anyone ever looked at these records? Anyone able to give some hints or tips on what I will be able to find?

I'm trying to get details for what happened to the family of Rev Robert Mathie of Glendevon following his death in 1789 ie where they went after they had to leave the Manse - would the Widow's and Orphan's Fund give me details of where annuities/pensions were paid to etc?

Regards

Clare / Mathews in Clare
« on: Monday 13 May 13 18:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to flesh out a bit more information on my husband's tree and currently am looking at a Mungo George Mathew(s) born 1825 in Perthshire Scotland. He married a Nannie Christy in Adare, Co Limerick on 3/3/1857 and he was described as being George MATHEWS, Esq., of Cloughcl?a House, county Limerick, third son of the late Robert MATHEWS, Esq., of Elmbank, to Nannie, youngest daughter of J. CHRISTY, Esq., of Fort Union, Adare.

As far as I can ascertain there were 4 possible children

Robert b c.1857 Co Limerick
Helen b c.1861 Co Limerick
William b 1865 Milltown Malbay, Co Clare
George Stenhouse b 1872 Milltown Malbay, Co Clare

I think Mungo George died around 1897 in Ennistimon and that his wife and son Robert were listed in the 1901 census as living at Kildeema South.

Can anyone help further?

Perthshire / Rev Robert Mathie of Glendevon
« on: Friday 31 December 10 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I'm trying to break down one of the brickwalls in my husband's tree with not a lot of sucess - can anyone help?

Rev Robert Mathie was minister in Glendevon from 1775-1789. He was married to Christian Dundas and died in 1789.

I've got some information on him from the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae. This helps to tie him to his son Robert Mathew a farmer at Elmbank, Kinnoull. Robert Junior's death certificate in 1855 states his parents were Rev Robert Mathew of Glendevon and Christian Dundas. Obviously the family name has been corrupted in that generation.

The Fasti Ecclesiae states that Robert Mathie was the second son of David Mathie of Blackford. He was educated at Glasgow Uni and licensed on 17/12/1765, called 19/1/1775 and ordained 11/5/1775. He died 29/3/1789. Married Christian Dundas on 24/7/1776 and had children Robert, George, Alison, John, Margaret and then another Margaret.

The only Mathie I can find in Blackford at the right time to be Robert Mathie's parents is David Mathie and Isobel Duncan. They have two children on the IGI - Margaret b 1740 and John b 1747. There is a marriage for a David Mathie and an Isobel Duncan but it's in Abercorn, West Lothian in 1724 so quite a bit out in terms of dates.

Can anyone help out with Robert Mathie's dob or his parents marriage details?

Also trying to find out about Christian Dundas too.

Many thanks for any help.

Tracey
