Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Scarborough Dean Road Cemetery.
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Two quite well-known people (they each have an entry in Wikipedia) were buried in Dean Road cemetery in plot C 33-9, but the site is now just an unmarked grassy area.

They were Edward Bury F.R.S., an engineer (1794-1858), and his wife, Priscilla Susan Bury, a botanical illustrator (1799-1872).

There must have been a monument on their grave, but enquiries to the Friends of Dean Park have revealed nothing.

So can anyone suggest what may have happened to it?  Or anything about it? Please.

Harry.

Cork / McConnell in Fermoy
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 15:12 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down Quentin McConnell of Fermoy, and particularly exactly when he died.

He was born on 4th March 1785 in Dailly, Ayrshire, Scotland, and moved to Ireland before 1813, when he was married in Cork.  He worked as a millwright, and there is a story that he was the proprietor of a "large ironworks" at Fermoy, but I suspect this is simply a much later piece of embroidery.

His son, born in Fermoy on 1st January 1815, was James Edward McConnell who was one of the founders of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1846.  He became quite well-known, but his father's details are elusive.  Quentin's death has been given as occurring in 1819 - or in 1821.

I'd be very grateful for any information - anything at all!  Or for hints about how to discover any details about him during his time in Ireland.

Kent / Death at Shooter's Hill.
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 19:49 BST (UK)  »
George Frederick Bury died, aged 13, at Shooter's Hill, Kent, in August or early September 1845.  This is puzzling to me, because his family came from Liverpool, but had recently moved to Buckinghamshire.  Which is still a fair distance away, and I can't think of any Kent connection.

Can anyone say if there was a hospital at Shooter's Hill around that time, please?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Liverpool death, 1827
« on: Friday 18 April 14 16:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to pin down the date of the death in Liverpool of Isabella Bury, nee Matthews.  She was born in 1797, but died in childbirth (the child was stillborn) in 1827, possibly in July of that year.

Any information at all about the date, address, or place of burial would be a great help.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Arkwright Street, Nottingham
« on: Friday 18 April 14 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me the names of whoever lived at 131 Arkwright Street, Nottingham around 1900?  I'm trying to find the real name of a writer who called himself THALESO in magazine articles, and I'd be thankful for any help.

Lancashire / Bolton vicar, 1830.
« on: Thursday 13 December 12 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of a handwritten note about a wedding in St Peter's parish church, Bolton, on 12th Sept 1830, where the vicar is named as "Henery Powell" - or with this clumsy writing it could be "Henery Parvale".

I've tried looking for him in the C of E list, but without success.  Has anyone come across him?  I'd be grateful for any leads.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Great Linford Parsonage House, 1841
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 16:51 BST (UK)  »
I'd be very grateful if someone could tell me who - if anyone - was living at the Parsonage House in Great Linford in 1841.

The Bury family that I'm chasing seems to have moved around a lot at that period, but they may - just may - have moved to Great Linford in early 1841.

Cork / McConnell in Fermoy.
« on: Tuesday 17 January 12 23:44 GMT (UK)  »
Quentin McConnell, from Dailly in Ayrshire, Scotland, is said to have died in 1819 - or maybe it was 1821 - in Fermoy, and is probably buried in the cemetery up the hill on the north side of the town.

Can anyone tell me more?

Leicestershire / Mail coach accident, 1827.
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 21:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the details of a road accident - "the upsetting of the London Mail, near Leicester" - in 1827.

At least one death resulted, that of Frederick Bury of Manchester, who was buried on 3rd March 1827.

Can anyone tell me anything about this accident, please?

Harry.
