The Common Room / Brabazon Hallows link
« on: Tuesday 23 April 24 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've traced back to a Mary Hallows (1710-1763) who married a Thomas Burwell (1700-1758) and had a daughter Susannah Burwell in 1738, from whom I descend. Alternate spellings include Hallowes and Burrell. The family resided in Cowbit, Lincolnshire.

On Family Search it shows Mary as being the first child of Thomas Hallowes and Lady Catharine Brabazon, who had married in 1709. However, I'm not seeing any record to substantiate this.

Lady Catharine is a daughter of Chambre Brabazon, the 5th Earl of Meath.

Does anyone have anything to confirm or deny if Mary is the daughter of Lady Catharine?

The Common Room / How to reconcile with the past?
« on: Sunday 18 September 22 22:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

My family history has taken a very unexpected turn, and I'm not sure how to deal with it.

When I began, my family were proudly descended from 19th century South Australian free settlers. I unearthed two convicts on my mother's side and faced some resistance in reconciling my family to that. However, the fact that both convicts were not murderers or rapists but had merely stolen from their employers to feed their families, and had committed no further crimes, helped with that, as had the general Australian attitude since the bicentenary in 1988 to be proud rather than ashamed of convict heritage.

But this week I have now stumbled on the fact that on my father's side we go back to the plantation owning Codrington family of the Leeward Islands and Barbados, who owned and traded in hundreds of slaves. Never would I have expected my family history to take me down this path.

I feel very conflicted about this, as it is totally at odds with my Quaker upbringing. I am literally losing sleep over this.

How do I reconcile this history with myself, and then present it to my family?

Any advice appreciated.

Devon / parents of Mary Ann STANBURY of South Tawton
« on: Tuesday 22 February 22 21:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm looking for any information relating to the parents of Mary Ann STANBURY. She married John WAYE in Sampford Courtenay on 21 May 1831, both listed as of this parish, witnesses were James CANN & Ann STANBURY.

In the 1851 census she is 40 and at South Tawton with her husband and seven children. Her birthplace is listed as South Tawton.

The FamilySearch Tree have her as Mary Ann, christened 24 Feb 1811, parents as Thomas STANBURY (c. 21 Jun 1788) and Elizabeth CANN (c. 20 May 1787) of South Tawton, married 15 May 1808 at South Tawton. No sources are supplied, and nothing on the IGI or FreeReg to support any of this.

on Find-A-Grave she is Mary Ann Stanbury Waye b. 17 Dec 1810 at Dalwood, East Devon.

Mary Ann has several siblings listed, most born before the marriage the first when her mother was 10! so it all looks dodgy. Can I get any supporting info to confirm or correct what I have?

Thanks

The Common Room / marriage of Peter & Martha VIVEN?
« on: Monday 07 February 22 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

I'm looking for a marriage for Peter VIVEN and his wife Martha (maiden name unknown)

Peter came from Crayford, Kent, born in 1773 to Peter & Rachel VIVEN, the first of their nine children.

Peter was a silk & calico printer by trade. Their first of five known children, also named Peter, was born to Martha in Isleworth, Middlesex, in 1805.

I know nothing of Martha other than her name, and that Peter was listed as a widower in the 1851 census.

any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nigel.
