Cumberland Lookup Requests / Fletchers of Clea Hall in Westward PRs
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

I'm looking for help locating the baptism and burial entries of of John Fletcher of Clea Hall (1695-1756), his wife Isabella Senhouse (1692/93-1774), and their family in the Westward Parish records (Westward in Allerdale below Derwent ward, Cumberland). They were married 1/1/1716-17 and apparently had about 7 sons and 2 daughters?

Any help with this would be appreciated as the Westward records are not on Ancestry, family Search or Freereg.

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / Richard Washington, Staples Inn, London
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone has any information on Richard Washington, son of Henry Washington and Eleanor Harrison, of South Cave, Yorkshire (marr. 7/10/1689). I can find little info on him from online records.

All I know is that he was an attorney at Staples Inn, London a Inn of Chancery and customs house for wool, where he was admitted on 14/2/1717-18.

I think he might be the Richard Washington, Gentleman who with his wife Elizabeth had as least 5 children bap. at St Andrew's Holborn, London: viz. Henry (21/5/1719), Mary (23/2/1722), Elianor (21/4/1724), Robert (25/7/1725) & Elizabeth (2/4/1726-27). Their bap. entries state their home being at Southandon Buildings or Old Southanden Buildings. Could this be Southampton Buildings? It's hard to decipher.

I also found reference to Richard leaving a will where his son William and his daughter Mary are only mentioned. But I can find no trace of this will or it's date.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Nottinghamshire / Newby in Mansfield
« on: Monday 31 July 23 23:47 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find the marriage and the baptisms of the family of Richard Newby and his wife Elizabeth Dand.

Richard Newby was bap. at Ingleton, Yorks. in 1633 and married Elizabeth, a daughter of Rowland Dand of Mansfield Woodhouse. They married about 1658 and apparently had about 4 children, Charles, William, Elizabeth and Eleanor before Richard died in 1664 (an online source says he was buried in St. Edmund King and Martyr, Mansfield Woodhouse, co. Notts. 10 October 1664, but not sure how accurate this is).

Elizabeth subsequently married St Peter & St Paul, Mansfield, co. Notts. 4 May 1669, Rev. William Mompesson, rector of Eyam, Derby and had, I think, 4 further children. She was apparently bur. at bur. St Andrew’s, Eakring, co. Notts. 10 March 1694-95.

Any help appreciated. Thanks you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Walker family of Gawthorpe Hall
« on: Friday 21 July 23 08:26 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information of the Walker family who bought Gawthorpe Hall in 1596 (by Anthony Walker).

I'm trying to identify that a Frances Lowther (born and bap. Ingleton 1612, daughter of William Lowther of Ingleton), married "a Mr Walker of Gawthorpe".

I can find barely anything online, except the following:

The Walkers were an old local family, and had been living at Bingley from at least the time of Edward III. They gradually acquiring property at Bingley before Anthony Walker purchased Gawthorpe Hall in 1596. He probably built the that the present Gawthorpe Hall. Anthony married in 1580 Agnes Wooller, in 1580 (possibly a connection of the William Wooller, who in 1597 left 50 for the purchase of an estate in Bingley for the benefit of the poor).

There was also an Anthony Walker, of Gilstead, clerke, who died in 1607. The Walkers were living at Gawthorpe Hall in 1634, and they sold the estate and manor to Henry Currer (grandson of Hugh Currer, of Marley), who resided at Gawthorpe in 1654, if not up to its sale in 1668. To confuse things this Henry Currer was probably the 2nd husband of Frances sister Eleanor Lowther, widow of William Newby.

If anyone can help I'd be grateful.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Newby of Barwick and Draughton
« on: Friday 21 July 23 08:15 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find information on the Family of Newby in Barwick (in Elmet) and Draughton (in Skipton), Yorkshire.

I'm trying to research the descendants of Eleanor Lowther, daughter of William Lowther of Ingleton. She was born & bap.at Ingleton 1613, and marr. William Newby (Nubye), called of Barwick, and of Draughton in Skipton. I think I have found William's bap. (as son of Richard) at Skipton 25/5/1614 & burial at Bingley 14/6/1635.

Eleanor apparently remarr. Henry Currer of Kildwick Hall, Craven (1587-1653) but I can find no marr. record (Ancestry has an Ellenor Currer, daughter of Henry Currer de Gathorppe, Gent. bap. Bingley 1648, bur. there 1650 who might be their child).

During there short marriage Eleanor and William had a son Richard Newby, educ. Burnsall school, co. Yorks., adm. St John’s Coll., Camb. (21 June 1651), and bap. Ingleton  24/9/1633.

However I'm stuck at this point. I can't identify anything else about Richard or his descendants.

There was a Charles Newby who 'sold part of a freehold at 13 High St, Skipton in 1682'. The Oxford Alumni states a Charles Newby or Nubey, admitted pens. at Peterhouse Cambridge 15 May 1677 aged 16, son of Richard, born 29/7/1660, education at Laughton-en-le-Morthen, Yorks. I think this is Richard's son.

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

Northumberland / Henry Swinburne of Newcastle upon Tyne
« on: Thursday 01 June 23 14:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello.
Can anyone help me confirm that Henry Swinburne, son of Richard Swinburne of Hewthwaite Hall, Cockermouth and Eleanor Bouche (bap. Cockermouth 1665) was, as stayed online, the Henry buried at St John's Newcastle 4 July 1716.
He apparently married a Mary Thompson at Cockermouth 1690. She died 1691 and he remarried 11/1691 Anna Peile.
There are othe Swinburne families in Newcastle at the same period who might be relations. Baptisms of a Henry, Elenor, Richard and Anthony between 1692 and 1709 might be his children.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Craig

Cumberland / Swinburnes of Hewthwaite
« on: Thursday 01 June 23 13:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
Does anyone have any information, or know where I can access information, on the Swinburne family of Hewthwaite/Huthwayte manor or hall, near Cockermouth, Cumberland during the late 17th into 18th century. Not much information of detail if any on Ancestry, Freereg or Family Search.
Possible baps and burials on Cockermouth and Isell records but can't link them properly without access to originals. Are these digitised online?
Individuals are Richard Swinburne & Eleanor Bouche (poss issue 1661-72, John, Edward, Henry, Anthony and Richard). Also issue of John and wife Winifred Lawson (poss issue between 1683 and 1707). Can't find marr. Certs of these either. Winifred was daughter of Sir Wilfred Lawson.
Any help appreciated.

Cumberland / Wilson of Underley
« on: Thursday 04 May 23 08:32 BST (UK)  »
Looking for some data (births, marriages, burials) on Thomas Wilson of Underley Hall, near Kirkby Lonsdale  and Jane Pennington.

I know Thomas Wilson was born about 1658, succeeded to Underley about 1684, and died January 1723. No details of his wife Jane apart from baptism at Bootle 1664 and marr. Jan. 1685.

They apparently had 8 children, of whom 5 predeceased Thomas. The only names I have are:

Henry who died January 1721, marr 1716 Barbara.
Thomas, 3rd son, born 1691 = July 1714 Frances Tatham. They apparently had one child reg. at Kirkby Lonsdale.

Any dates or details would be appreciated please.

Kind regards, Craig

Inverness / Alexander McIntosh, leather worker, born Inverness???
« on: Friday 28 April 23 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me in my search to find out about my 3 x great grandfather Alexander McIntosh.

He married Janet Chisholm at Inveresk 12 Dec. 1853 where he is called a Commercial Traveller.

His only child (as far as I know?), Mary Isabella Chisholm, my 2 x great grandmother, was born 14 Sept., bap. Fisherow, Inveresk, Musselburgh 10 Oct. 1854, daughter of Alexander McIntosh, Book-deliverer.

I only have him with wife and daughter in the 1861 census at 13 Niddry St, Tron Church parish, Canongate, Edinburgh:
Alex. McIntosh   Head   Mar.   35   Leather Merchant   born Inverness
Janet C. McIntosh   Wife   Mar.   34   born Edinburgh
Mary I. McIntosh   Dau   6   Scholar   born Fisherow

He was dead by the 1871 census where Janet Chisholm was living alone a widow, aged 44, a Seed Cleaner at Bottom tenement, High St, Stevensons Close, St Giles parish, Edin.

Mary, the daughter was also living alone aged 16, a Shop Girl, at 74 Rose St, St George's parish, Edin.

However when Mary married James Hill on Leith Walk 2/7/1874, she is called Mary Kilgour McIntosh, daughter. of Alexander McIntosh, Tanner.
I have no idea where the Kilgour came from instead of 'Isabella' and have been unable to find a connection. I have tried variants of McIntosh but cannot find his death cert between 1861-1871.

All I know from the above is that he was born around 1825-26 in Inverness area, worked with leather and was a commercial traveller.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I've also posted this on the Midlothian Rootschat site.
