World War One / Army numbers
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my nephew's grandfather's army record. Can anybody help please?

He joined the RE as a sapper c.1914 and was allocated a number "22942"

He died still in service c 1937 as "RSM Arthur John KEANE" number unknown.

Apparently the army gave all serving members new numbers c. 1922

Can the new number be determined from the old, Please?

Thanks Benzol

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Marriages for Sarah Munt/Barnes - Tottenham
« on: Monday 19 April 21 14:42 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for details of Sarah Munt and/or Sarah Barnes marriages. Sarah was born about 1789 in the Tottenham area. She seems to have lived there all her life as records show her death at the age of 73 in Edmonton. (The 1861 census shows her as age 75 living in the Tottenham parish of Holy Trinity.)

The 1841 and 1851 censuses show Sarah as the wife of John Munt. The couple have two youngsters living with them, John Munt jnr. born about 1826 and William Barnes born about 1817. John was the son of John Munt and his first wife Elizabeth. William was the son of Sarah (presumably from a previous marriage, if the was one.). John Munt's first wife Elizabeth died soon after the birth of her son John in 1826. Could someone kindly look up a marriage between John and Sarah somewhere  in the Edmonton area between 1826 and 1841.

Sarah's first marriage is more of a challenge, the  family name Barnes being very common. From the few details I have it seems the marriage took place between c. 1805 when Sarah was about 16 and 1817ish when William was born. The baptism of William Barnes or the burial of a Barnes husband  between 1816 and 1840 might help. Also a baptism for a Sarah c.1789 might give a lead to Sarah's maiden name. I have no great expectations of finding this marriage but any thoughts or views would help.

Can someone provide details from 1841 census.

I have a copy of 1841 census for Woburn RD

Battlesden Village

ref Page 19 Reg No. 107 Piece/folio 5/2

The details given show Elizabeth age 13; Susannah; and Priscilla. There appear to be 8 individuals on my copy of the census page. One M (presumably Head of family) and 7 females. There is no family name and no given names nor ages apart from those mentioned.

Any help/details appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Henry Kimpton and Susan Trayte
« on: Saturday 06 June 20 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Henry and Susan (Henry's second wife) were married Oct/Dec quarter 1886 Holborn RD. I've traced this couple via Family Search and Freebmd through the ages. I'm left with a couple of queries.

1. Henry age 12 born Deptford, Kent, is living with his mother Mary and sister Mary in 1851 at Goldsmiths Place, St. Leonards Shoreditch Middx. Is it possible to lookup this record in its original manuscript form in order to confirm that the K. Kimpton recorded in Family Search is actually H Kimpton please?

2. Susan Kimpton (nee Trayte) has a recorded age of 7 in the 1861 census; 48 in 1901; 58 in 1911. She claims that she was born Clerkenwell. I'm unable to trace the birth. Can someone help please!

Does any Rootchatter have this couple in their family tree?

Northamptonshire / John & Elizabeth Bullock of Daventry
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 11:24 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for wise counsel.
John & Elizabeth (nee Cock) were married by licence in Daventry on 6 Sept 1788. I am trying to establish whether they are gggGrandparents of mine, or not.
Does any "rootschatter" have this couple in their family tree?

If this couple are mine they lived in a village, Pirton, at the end of the 1700s. They had a son William born 1797. John the father died between 1797 when his son was born and 1803 when Elizabeth, his wife, a widow, remarried. There are no records for John or William after this time. Elizabeth went on to have more children and died age 60 in 1830.

My problem is to link this Daventry couple with the couple living in Pirton. Apart from the characters already mentioned. There was one other Bullock living in the village, my ggGrandmother Elizabeth. The 1851 and 1861 censuses show her born Daventry c. 1791. I've assumed that this Elizabeth was the daughter of the John & Elizabeth.

Incidentally I can't think why anybody, particularly these literate people would move from Daventry to a village in Hertfordshire.

Any ideas? Does anybody know if the Daventry marriage licences exist for this period, may have info? Are there any other possible John/Elizabeth couples in Daventry at this time?

Perthshire / William Walker McNaughton - Death 1889
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 01:24 BST (UK)  »
My maternal Great Grandfather William Walker McNaughton was a Flesher by trade. He died in Perth Infirmary at 7.30 am 17th December 1889 at the age of 55. The recorded cause of death was "shock; broken ribs and forearm; ruptured bladder; and internal haemorrhage". The death record also states that he was the widower of a lady who's maiden name (or I guess previous marital name) was "Wilson".

I assume that he was injured in some kind of accident (or maybe assault/fight) and that such an incident would be recorded by the local press. Can someone tell me if the AKBell library holds newspapers for this era?

Until I came across his death record I had no idea that he had remarried. My Great Grandmother died in Dec 1861. Does the AKBell hold details of Perth Marriages between 1862 and 1889?

Any information would be helpful.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Charles Simmonds and family Napier NZ
« on: Tuesday 06 December 11 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Can any body help my cousin find out about her great x2 grandparents and their family please?

Charles (aged 28) and Caroline Simmonds (aged 24), together with their children Wallace aged 4 and Nellie aged 2, arrived in Napier, Hawkes Bay on the Renfrewshire the first week of January 1878. Their youngest daughter Elizabeth had died on route. The family started their journey from Plymouth England and the children were born in Cardington nr. Bedford England where Caroline nee Woodcraft was born.

Wallace Simmonds, my cousin's great grandfather, married a Napier girl, Elizabeth Ann Coker, on thee 14th November 1899 which suggests that the family were still living in the Napier area.
He was, like his father before him, an ironmonger. He worked at Hawkes Bay Iron Foundry. Was this company in Napier?

Can somebody tell my cousin if any suitable records exist in the Hawkes Bay region which would enable her to find out whether her great x2 grandparents had any more children. Did her great x2 granparents die in the Napier area? Also what happened to Nellie?

Any information or knowledge would be good.

Thanks Benzol
