London and Middlesex / The Whitechapel Bell Foundry - a glimmer of hope
« on: Friday 22 June 18 10:27 BST (UK)  »
Family and local history researchers with a particular interest in the Whitechapel area will already know that the famous bell foundry, which had roots going back to the 14th century, closed a year ago despite the efforts of those who desperately wished to see it saved. It now seems there is a chance of rescue. If interested please see the following piece

http://spitalfieldslife.com/2018/06/21/hope-for-the-whitechapel-bell-foundry/

There is to be a public consultation today (22 June) and tomorrow. If you wish to make your views known to the developers but cannot attend the meetings, you can send an email to

info@thebellfoundry.co.uk

I personally feel that this wonderful part of London's heritage should not be lost if we can possibly save it and give back jobs to those who were made unemployed. I am not intending to mount a crusade here on Rootschat but I do feel it is relevant to those with an interest in and love for the history of this area.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Burial St Helier
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 13:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am new to Jersey research and wondered if anyone can tell me if there is or was a graveyard at St Helier parish church? If so, is there a searchable database for the monumental inscriptions? I am looking for any details relating to the death of a child, Louisa Maria Neville, who was buried at St Helier on 1 March 1842. I have done some searching online but can find nothing relating to MIs though I know that those on Alderney, and their records, were destroyed during WW2. Maybe this also happened in St Helier? I would appreciate any advice.

Westmorland / Crosthwaite and Beetham
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if the parish registers for St Michael Beetham and Crosthwaite Church are available to search online? If not, where can they be accessed? I am needing to see entries for February 1836. Many thanks

Lancashire / Philips Park Cemetery Manchester
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me please if there is an online searchable database for Philips Park Cemetery other than that on the Manchester.gov.uk site? I have used this site and established that there are some grave details which are of interest to my research however the site is not letting me register (I have been going round in circles) in order to get the information. It looks like it is not working at present.
Thank you.

Lancashire / Interesting Find in the National Probate Calendar
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
Today I was looking for the will of an ancestor in the NPC and noticed that there was an entry for the death of a teacher of languages in Manchester in 1864. The names of two of the executors interested me: Frederick Engels at an address in Manchester and Karl Marx in Middlesex.

Lancashire / Heywood Cemetery
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 17:33 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help a friend in Canada who would like to confirm that his ancestor is buried in Heywood Cemetery. There does not seem to be an online register of burials for this cemetery and Rochdale Council charge £33 for a search. Has anyone any ideas if there is another way? I have the date of burial but no grave number.

Lancashire / Haunting film of old Salford
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
I think anyone researching in Salford prior to the 1970s will find this of interest. It's the first part of a film project sponsored by Salford University  which puts together pieces of film from the North West Film Archive made circa 1968 as the old Salford homes were demolished. It shows well how people had lived in the area for a long time. http://vimeo.com/68841275

Apologies if this has already been posted on RC. I have only just come across it.

Tipperary / Deaths in Nenagh - certificates required
« on: Tuesday 16 July 13 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please give me up to date information on the cost of obtaining death certificates in Ireland and how to go about it? I do not live in Ireland. I do not have an Irish bank account. The information I can find online is patchy to say the least and the costs quoted vary between 44 euros (which I guess is for a living person's birth or marriage cert) and 6 euros for a photocopy - but what else would it be if not a photocopy?? This would be fine for my purposes. I thought my problems were solved when I found a HSE (no indication of what that is) site which offered an online service but the "clickable" icon was inactive and just returned me to the same page. None of the sites seems to offer any kind of email service for answering questions. I have obtained two certificates in the past from the Civil Registration Office and I remember it was something of a difficult process then, I fear it is even worse now. Any advice would be appreciated.
