Lancashire Lookup Requests / Burnley stationer 1819
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 03:34 BST (UK)  »
The Gilbertson branch of my family is said to have come from Burnley (via IOM). I have found the following in 'A Sketch of Burnley Seventy Years Ago' by James Grant December 6th, 1887
http://www.daleeccles.net/burnley_in_1818.htm

Mr. Gilbertson, stationer, occupied the premises under "the Blue Clock," ...

Is it possible to find out the names of the proprietor/s of this business? If I knew the first names of Mr Gilbertson the stationer I might be able to determine whether he belongs on my family tree.

Thank you

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Gilbertson - was he born in Burnley?
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 23:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have found some scrappy notes in the file of someone who was doing family research many years ago. It has Thomas Gilbertson being born in Burnley on 5 April 1820, parents Walker and Margaret Gilbertson, but elsewhere his father's name is recorded as Richard. Another note says Thomas was christened on 23 April 1820. I would be very pleased if someone could tell me whether my Thomas was born in Burnley and if so, who his father was. Also, would it be possible to go back further to see where the name Walker came from? Thomas married Hannah Walker Toplis/Topliss on IOM in 1840, and his IOM business partner was William Walker which suggests a connection.
Many thanks

Scotland / information about tartan COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 04 January 12 02:18 GMT (UK)  »
This is a photo of my grandmother, taken around 1910. She was one of two daughters of David Simpson who was born in Glasgow in 1855 and married in South Australia in 1898. I am wondering whether anyone can tell me anything about what she is wearing. Obviously her father wanted her to know her Scottish heritage.

My father's uncle, James McKenzie SNELL (known as Ken) was born in Adelaide 9/12/87. He had a twin brother, Albert Hamiton SNELL. Ken left South Australia and nobody heard from him again. There was a rumour that he had gone to Queensland. Can somebody help with a date and place of death?

Australia / Melbourne prisoner record
« on: Friday 10 September 10 09:06 BST (UK)  »
I have found a 1904 newspaper article about a man who was imprisoned in Melbourne in that year. He has the same name as one of my great-great uncles and I would like to know whether they are the same person. I understand that Victorian prison records can only be accessed in person. I live in SA but will have an afternoon in Melbourne next January (en route to Europe). Can someone please tell me exactly where to go and what to do to view the record so that I can be sure of getting what I want in the time available. I would like to know now so that I can book flights which give me enough time to get my detective work done.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / look up request MADDISON - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 08:21 BST (UK)  »
My great-great-grandparents, Ann (nee Foster) and George Maddison of Durham, left Plymouth on the Arundel Castle on 4 Feb 1876, and arrived at Port Adelaide South Australia on 19 April 1876. I have the details of the children born in Australia, but there is some confusion about the children born in Durham. The passenger list says that George, Ann, Lionel aged 3, and Elizabeth aged 1 arrived. It is also noted that Ann gave birth to a daughter on the voyage. My question is, was Elizabeth the daughter born at sea and her age rounded up to 1, or was Elizabeth born in Durham? Also, is there a marriage record for Ann and George?
Many thanks

Durham Lookup Requests / look up request MADDISON family Durham
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 03:38 BST (UK)  »
I have a great-great-grand-father George Henry Maddison who was born in the December quarter of 1848, and christened on 8 October 1848 at Houghton Le Spring Durham. His parents were probably George and Ann Maddison. Is it possible to find out the names and DOBs of his siblings, if he had any? I have details of George's migration to South Australia and of his numerous descendents.

Many thanks

Australia Lookups completed / SA death lookup - Charles Henry MOTLEY -COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I am keen to know the date on which Charles Henry MOTLEY of Adelaide died. From other information I have, I estimate he would have been born around 1870-1880 and died somewhere between 1919 and 1959. He had a son of the same name who was born in 1902 but Charles Jnr moved to Victoria so would not be in the SA record.
Many thanks

Australia Lookups completed / SA marriage - Dorothy Margaret MOTLEY - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 21 April 10 10:38 BST (UK)  »
This may not be possible because I don't have the name of Dorothy's husband and am not even sure that she married.

I believe Dorothy's parents, Gertrude Enright and Charles Henry Motley, married in Adelaide in July 1920 and their daughter Dorothy Margaret was born in Adelaide in 1920. I would like to follow this line of the family but first need to know whether Dorothy married and/or had any children. I guess that if she did marry it would have been some time between around 1940 and 1960. Is it possible to find out?

Thank you
