Australia / Lookup - 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' booklet - Thomas HAMPTON

Dear Rootschatters,
I am hoping someone may have a copy of the booklet 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' and would kindly check and see if there is a listing for the burial of Thomas HAMPTON in 1855. Thomas was killed in Jamberoo by a falling tree in November of that year. Thomas, known to be CofE had recently arrived in Australia on an assistance scheme. Despite extensive research I'm still unable to locate his actual place of burial.
Any assisatnce greatly appreciated.

Australia / Shipping Crew Lists - Victoria

Dear Rootschatters,

I've been going around in circles trying to find crew lists for ships arriving in Victoria in the 1850's. I'm specifically looking for a Hans OLSEN. I know he was a Mariner on board 'Peter Goddefroy' via Adelaide to Melbourne in Dec 1855, but I am trying to find other vessels he may have arrived on - one in particular, the 'Blanche Moore' arriving in Victoria in July 1857.

Any advice on where I might find this information would be very much apprecaited.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / 'Photo' restoration request please

Dear Rootschatters,

I wonder if anyone can possibly do something with this 'photo' I have recently received of my old Irish ancestor, Mary Burns. The original photo seems lost these days and this is a scan of a photocopy so I'm not sure how well it can be done. I would appreciate any attempt though. Mary died at 85yrs in the mid 1920's.

Australia / 1873 Victorian Birth Certificate

I have located the birth certificate of an ancestor, Ann Price, born Sept 1873 in Newtown, Scarsdale, Victoria and find some information on it that I have never come across before.

In the area for the informant it shows her mothers name & residence and then the words "after declaration made and by law required".

Would this be noted in place of a signature or mark that is usually the case? Or, is there some other meaning/reason behind this?

Any assistance/ideas from Rootschatters appreciated.

Australia / Alteration of childs name following remarriage

In April 1857, Thomas Lewis CHURCH (Sailor - 28yrs) and his new bride, Mary (18 yrs) sailed on the ‘Blanche Moore’ from London to Victoria, Australia. Two months into the voyage Thomas went missing at sea. In December that year in Melbourne, young Mary gave birth to their first (and obviously only) child, registered as Thomas.

The mystery starts 4 years later after Mary marries again and gives birth to her second child, John. On John’s birth certificate it lists one older sibling living (none deceased), but the name of the older child is different. The child went by this 'new' name for the remainder of his life. Would Mary and her new husband have been legally required to change the infant’s name? If so, does anyone know if these types of records are available to the public?

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Lookup - SMITH

Dear Rootschatters,

I am trying to locate my gggg grandfather and his family in the 1841 Census. I strongly suspect the family lived in Whitby, North Riding (in 1853 young John mentioned below lived in Henrietta Street, Whitby). There is a slight chance they were at Eston though.

The family is Benjamin SMITH, Labourer/Blacksmith, age unknown, POB unknown. Wife’s name unknown. A child, John approximately 15 years old and most probably another child Joseph. There may also be a Henry.

My sincere apologies for all the unknowns. Hopefully someone will be able to turn this around for me!!

Any information appreciated.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Lookup - Thornbury, Sth Gloucestershire

I am trying to locate my ancestors, George & Hannah (nee LODGE) WITHERS on the 1841 census. I believe they both passed away in the same month (another mystery) in 1842 in Thornbury. There should also (hopefully) be mention of a 10-11 year old daughter Sarah.

I know VERY little about this family before Sarah.

Australia / Assisted Immigrant Sponsorship/Assignment

My ggg grandfather, Thomas HAMPTON arrived in Australia from England with his family on board the ship 'HILTON' in 1855 under an assisted immigation scheme. His local parish in Woodchurch, Kent, UK assisted the family in being accepted for the scheme.

Unfortunately, Thomas seems to disappear following his arrival in Australia. The family settled in Mudgee, NSW and in 1858 his wife Mary remarries (listed as a widow on the marriage certificate). Despite years of searching, no official document showing Thomas's death has ever been located.

I am trying to find out if there is a chance that Thomas may have been required to be assigned to work somewhere following his arrival as part of the scheme (not that I've come across this situation previously). Is it possible that Thomas may have had to be sponsored by a person/company already in Australia as well? No paperwork that I have (assistance scheme applications/shipping documents) list anything.

Any clues as to where I could continue the search? ANY assistance greatly appreciated.

Australia / Was the Murder Solved???

Hi Rootschatters,

I am trying to discover if anyone was ever brought to justice over the death of an ancestor. In all my searching I have never been able to obtain any followup information after the following advertisement. It was listed on the 3rd Oct 1828 in The Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser:

"TWENTY POUNDS REWARD.
Whereas the Jury at the Coroner's Robert Raine, who was found dead in the Parramatta River, on Tuesday, the 9th Day of September 1828, have returned a Verdict of Wilful Murder against some
Person or Persons unknown; Notice is hereby given, that the above Reward of TWENTY POUNDS will be paid to any Person who shall give such Information as may lead to the Apprehension and Conviction of the Perpetrator or Perpetrators of the Said Murder"

Any thoughts on where I might be able to discover if there was ever an outcome?
