United States of America / WHYATT - Cheshire / Lancashire / Canada / USA
« on: Friday 02 November 12 02:48 GMT (UK)  »
Pease, I truly don't need any look-ups of any kind.

Posting to USA forum due to John WHYATT's  (below) older brother Joseph WHYATT settled in 1) Fall River Mass;  2) Taunton Mass.  A nephew Frederick WHYATT (father Thomas) to both settled in Passaic NJ.  They were all cotton mill workers.  Siblings of Joseph's & John's worked cotton mills in and around Cheshire UK.  John had 3 daughters who migrated to USA from Nova Scotia.  Now many descendants all over, from these WHYATTs.

Just seeking anyone who descends from the above & my great-grandfather John WYATT (WHYATT*) born 1849 Stockport Cheshire - died 1899 Bedford NS and Margaret MCCLUSKY* born 1857 Glasgow Scotland - died 1943 Bedford NS.

*WHYATT - Spelling on all English & Scottish BMD certs & cenus.  Only with transcripts of John's older 3 siblings' baptisms is it WYATT.

*MCCLUSKY-MCCLUSKEY - From 9 BMD certs & several census reports, this surname is spelt without the 'e'.  On several certs it is actually spelt MCLUSKY.  Only on the two English certs and the Canadian certs/bapt does it have the 'e'.

John & Margaret wed on 16th July 1875 Dennistoun Glasgow Scotland

From m/c, parents were:  James WHYATT & Agnes HADFIELD //  John MCLUSKY & Jane STEVENSON.  His mother always used forename Nancy, not Agnes.

Children:

4)  Janet Stevenson WHYATT b.1881 Glasgow - mar  Charles NELSON in Bedford NS
5)  James b.1884 - Mellor Derbyshire - died Bedford NS - mar. Cora

12)  Anna Victoria (Chick) b.1897 - d. post 1987 Atlanta GA USA (confirmed by son) buried Cos Cob CT - m. Joseph MURRANS died Florida-buried Cos Cob CT - 2 children [living]

+ Robert b.1877 Glasgow Scotland.  Until just before Margaret's death in 1943 always thought to be eldest child / brother.  He was the son of Margaret's sister Mary MCLUSKY (1877 m/c & 1881 d/c) who married James MCKENZIE in Glasgow.  Daughter Sarah b.1879-d.1949 Greenrock Scotland; unwed/no children.  Known in Nova Scotia as Robert WYATT, he wed and had 1 daughter Margaret, who never had any children.

Lanarkshire / Jessie URQUHART (CLARK) / John MILLER
« on: Monday 24 September 07 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Seeking further info and/or descendants of the above couple.  In 1881 Jessie is listed as a CLARK grand-daughter aged 6 (born c1875) within the household of William Henry CLARK born Devon England and his wife Thomasina / nee JAMIESON born Unst Shetland.

On the 1891 census, at age 16 Jessie is described as an 'adopted daughter' with the surname URQUHART.

On the 1901 census, Jessie is married to John MILLER, with the widowed Thomasina (mis-spelt on the census) CLARK also in the household.  Thomasina is described as mother-in-law to head John MILLER.

Jessie and John MILLER are reputed to have been the parents of a professional Scottish footballer Billy MILLER, though this is unverified at the moment.

Jessie MILLER was the informant on Thomasina [Jamieson] CLARK's, death in 1907 and stated to be the daughter of Thomasina.

Hope someone sees a connection to the above people.

Lanarkshire / MCKENZIE - Sarah born c1880
« on: Monday 24 September 07 20:53 BST (UK)  »
Seeking further info and/or descendants of Sarah MCKENZIE, daughter of James MCKENZIE born c1849 and Mary MCLUSKY (aka MCCLUSKY) born c1852.  A son Robert was born c1877, although I've not found his birth details yet, nor have actually sought Sarah's.

James, a blacksmith journeyman and Mary, a cotton factory threader, were wed on 25th May 1877.  Witnesses to the marriage were:  Margaret and Hugh GORMAN or DORMAN.  We do not know if there was a relationship between the witnesses and/or to James and Mary.

As per mar. registry:
James was the son of Robert MCKENZIE a tailor journeyman and Elizabeth MCKENZIE (also her m/s?).

Mary was the daughter of John MCLUSKY and Sarah STEVENSON (deceased)**

Mary MCLUSKY died 21st January 1881 at age 29.  ** mother stated to be Janet STEVENSON (deceased).  Father John MCLUSKY;  husband James MCKENZIE.

My great-gran's (Mary's sister) parents on her 1875 marriage are listed as John MCLUSKY and Jane STEVENSON - both living.

The only death of a STEVENSON with a MCLUSKY spouse _ in all of Scotland _ between 1855 and 1881 was a Janet STEVENSON married to John MCLUSKY.  This was checked and verified 3 times by a staff member at the GROS in Edinburgh when I obtained a copy of the death from the registry book.  My great-gran named her eldest daughter Janet Stevenson WHYATT (father was John WHYATT b. Stockport Cheshire).  A widowed John MCLUSKY is residing with the WHYATT family at 193 Castle St. on the 1881 census, just a few streets over from where Janet STEVENSON died - at 7 Kennedy St.

Child Robert MCKENZIE age 10 was brought to Canada by his maternal aunt Margaret MCCLUSKY and her husband John WHYATT in July 1887, along with their living children Joseph, Janet (both born Glasgow), James (b. Derbyshire) and Nancy (b. Stockport).

We believe James MCKENZIE re-married to Mary HUGHES born c1855.  She is in his household in 1881.  Then in the 1891 James has wife Mary, daughter Sarah, plus two other children.  Assuming this is the same family.

Sarah may have grown up not knowing she had a brother Robert in Canada nor that Mary HUGHES was not her true mother.

Hopefully these family details will ring a bell with someone.

Lanarkshire / SPARE CERTS ~ atten: jeanhemm
« on: Monday 24 September 07 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello Jean,

Regarding spare cert you have for a Martha BROWN 1900 ~

Please, if possible, could you give me the details, such as the type of cert, named parents and/or spouse?

I honestly don't think this Martha is my gran nor her mother Martha (mar. BROWN), but to be on the 'safe side', I'd be interested in knowing.

Warm regards,

Lanarkshire / MCCLUSKY / MCLUSKY / STEVENSON / WYLIE / MCKENZIE
« on: Monday 24 September 07 18:46 BST (UK)  »
Our great-gran was Margaret MCCLUSKY / MCLUSKY, spelling depends on which cert is looked at.  I've 7 for her, her 4 children (two died), including her mother's death cert.  Most times her own name is spelt MCC, but her father is most often spelt MCL.  No 'e', except when Margaret's husband registered the deaths of his two wee sons, when I find two spellings on the certs, one of which is MCCLUSKIE.  I'm assuming he was overwrought with the death of his second child so soon after the the first.

Margaret is listed on the Halifax Nova Scotia census (1901 & 1911) as having been born in March 1857.  Her death cert (14th February 1943) also has the same date.  According to mar. cert and 1881 Glasgow census, she was born c1855.  She herself told family she was born 1855.

Parents listed on her mar. cert. were John MCLUSKY (sic) and Jane STEVENSON, mother deceased.  The only STEVENSON with a MCCLUSKY / MCLUSKY spouse, _ in all of Scotland _ who died between 1855 & 1881 was a Janet STEVENSON wife of John MCLUSKY.  Her death was February 1880.   Janet's parents were John STEVENSON, schoolmaster and Mary WYLIE, both deceased by the time of her death at age 56.

Above was verified by staff at the GROS in Edinburgh when I personally obtained the copy from the registration book.  Janet died only a few streets over from where Margaret and her husband were living in 1881.  Widowed ather John MCLUSKY (sic) was also in the residence at that time.

I'm having a terrible time pin-pointing which is them on any census records before 1881.  We know Margaret had a sister Mary, who married a James MCKENZIE.  Mary died in Janurary 1881.  Between her mar. cert and her death cert, her mother's name differs.  Upon mar. mother was Sarah STEVENSON, upon death Janet STEVENSON - deceased on both, which would not have been true for the marriage, if she is truly Margaret's sister.    I'm fairly confident I have the correct MCCLUSKY / MCKENZIE marriage and death, as Margaret brought their son Robert born c1877 over to Canada when they came.  He grew up with the surname WYATT (should have been WHYATT), but Margaret had told him and other family his surname was actually MCKENZIE.

Believe I have found Robert with his father, sister and a housekeeper in the 1881 Glasgow census.  Sister's name was Sarah.  I've not looked for her birth c1880, but have Robert's, which I couldn't find.  Plan to have another go at both.  'Tis possible Robert was born before his parents' marriage, but I'd not looked for him under the surname MCCLUSKY / MCLUSKY, only under MCKENZIE.

Margaret MCCLUSKY married 1875 to John WHYATT born September 1849 Stockport Cheshire.  Arrived Halifax Nova Scotia aboard the Peruvian, which sailed from Liverpool Lancashire on 19th July 1887.

Any suggestions?  I do use www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Does any of the above family sound familar to anyone?

Shropshire / METCALFE + connections
« on: Monday 14 March 05 00:16 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking those researching William METCALFE born Northallerton Yks and Margaret HARRISON born 1849 Bedale Yks, married c1869 Burnston Yks.   Children born in Yks:  Margaret, Enos and William.

Family then moved to Wem Shrops where many more children were born, some of whom died when young.  One child, Ethel Ann b.1882, was my husband's grandmother.

She married in April 1907 Llandwrog Wales,  to Harry RICHARDSON believed born c1883 in Bedminister near Bristol.   Both were in service at 'Glynllfon House/Manor'.  They lived at 'Sea View' Cottage, where children George, Doris and Albert were born between 1907 & 1909.  They later lived at Llanymynech, only 6+/- miles from Melverley.

William & Margaret (nee HARRISON) METCALFE later lived at Church House, Melverley Shrops.  Both, as well as some children w/spouses are buried in St. Peter's Church yard.

Other names connected to them are:  PIERCE, MADDELY (sp?), OAKLEY, HUMPHRIES, DAVIS, WHITEHEAD, HEATER.

Family member(s) also lived at nearby (to Melverley) 'Green Farm', to which my husband and his sister were evacuated during WWll, from Sussex.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone with connections to these families.

Cheers,
Toni ...  Ontario Can.

Lincolnshire / YARWOOD - Stamford / Lincoln
« on: Sunday 13 March 05 22:59 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking info regarding YARWOODs in either Stamford and/or Lincoln.

Husband's great-gran was Ann YARWOOD born 1842.  Date comes from her headstone, as well as census reports (1881/91/01) and one marriage.  Father:  John YARWOOD.  Mother:  unkn

On all census reports Ann gives Lincoln, Lincolnshire as birthplace, but the only Ann YARWOOD with a father John and born in 1842 we can find is an Ann in Stamford.  Quite some distance between the two places.  Quite possibly shortly after birth or as a young child, she went to Lincoln to live, so considered herself as being from there.

By 13th May 1861 Ann was married to David HEATER and gave birth on that date to Benjamin David HEATER, at No. 4 Viaduct Tr.  Brighton Sussex.   David died in 1865.  Ann had two daughters, Emily 1866 and Annie 1868.  David obviously is not the father!

Ann then married John KENNELLY age 59, in 1870 in Brighton.  Two sons born:  John 1871 and Joseph 1874.  Shortly thereafter, Ann was widowed again.

In 1883 Ann again married to Edward ROWLAND in Brighton.  No known children born.  In 1901, they are living in Fulham (London) with sons John and Joseph KENNELLY living nearby in Fulham and Kensington.

Ann ROWLAND [nee YARWOOD, formally HEATER & KENNELLY) died in 1910 and was buried in Woodvale Cem. Brighton Sussex.  Later joined by grandson Harold David Percivil HEATER 1901-1911, her son Benjamin David HEATER  d.1945 and daughter-in-law Fanny Rebecca PAYNE c1863-1946.

Any help in gleaning more info regarding the YARWOOD  (& HEATER) surname, would be most welcomed.

Warmest regards,
Toni ... Ontario Canada.
