Essex / 110 on one day
« on: Tuesday 15 April 14 14:50 BST (UK)  »
On 17 April 1827 the vicar of St Andrew's, Halstead carried out 110 baptisms; is this a record for one day?
I believe 17.04.1827 was the Tuesday after Easter Sunday, can anyone offer an explanation for so many baptisms on that particular day?

England / PR phrases and words
« on: Friday 13 December 13 08:32 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone explain why a 19th century church in Essex would have a collection "upon the brief for Morpeth....".
Secondly, in one PR the "occupation" of people being buried was given as "Stranger" even if the person's name was known; is this a stranger to the parish or to the church?

Thanks in anticipation

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Panfield parish records? On Seax the baptisms stop in 1812.

Ireland / Irish churches

Good Morning

This Englishman has just spent a few days in Counties Cork and Kerry, and noticed a lack of old churches. Most of the rural churches over here are 500+ years old; why not so in Ireland?

Essex / Vicars

Apart from 2 wedings, 3 burials, 4 christenings, checking on who had gone to church and receiving tithes; what did a vicar in a small rural parish actuually do?
