Durham Lookup Requests / Ship leaving Seaham? First day of WWII - Captain Woods
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 16:20 BST (UK)  »
My father remembers being told of a relative who was captain of a ship carrying coal to Germany, who was captured on the first day of WWII and kept prisoner.  We presume the ship was leaving Seaham as thats where all the family lived and that the man's surname would have been Woods.  Noone else in the family knows of this story and I am at a loss as to where to try and find any more information on it.  My father thinks whoever it was, came back after the war.  I was just wondering if anyone had any access to ship's records for that area and time?  Many thanks

I am unable to find a marriage for Ellen Mary Brown, born in Walthamstow in 1897.  I know she lived in Morden during WW2 and was married with a possibly still living daughter who was in the Wrens during the war.   I am guessing she married somewhere around Morden.  Her father was called Thomas Brown and her mother was Jane Elizabeth (maiden name was Stannard).  I am descended from one of Ellen's brothers, but we no nothing about her.  I would like to follow the family tree down that line, but obviously need a married name before I can go any further.  Any help is very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Kent Lookup Requests / ALICE JAMES/ARTHUR BLENKINSOP FORSTER, SEVENOAKS 1910
« on: Friday 03 April 09 20:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  Can anyone help me with any information on the above two people.   I have their marriage certificate as 29 July 1910 at Sevenoaks Registry Office.  The address given for the groom was Royal Crown Hotel, Sevenoaks and for the bride, Montreal, Sevenoaks.  Have googled Montreal, and it could either have been Montreal Cottage in Riverhead/Sevenoaks or somewhere in Montreal Road, Sevenoaks.  They appear to be large houses, so perhaps she was working in one of them.  Arthur Forster was a teacher (have details of him being a French teacher in the States in the 1930's).  Could anyone help with where I could start looking to see what his employment was, presumably in Sevenoaks, around 1910?  Also, my family remembers talk of Alice James being a nurse.  Any ideas would be fantastic, as am at a loss as  to what took Alice James to Sevenoaks in the first place! :)

US Lookup Requests / ALICE JAMES & ? FOSTER Entry to USA abt 1912
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone can shed some light on a total puzzle from our family point of view, it would be greatly appreciated.
We have an Alice James - born March 1873 in Canton (Cardiff), Glamorgan, Wales to John James and Mary Preece. According to family talk, she was a nurse and remembered as coming to the family house in West Ham, London, to tell the family she was going to America with a patient she had met whose surname was Foster.  This would have been around 1911 to 1912.  I have Alice on an England census in West Ham for 1881, but cannot find her on an England or Wales Census for 1891/1901 or 1911.

An elderly aunt - now deceased - remembered talk of going to Texas with this man.  As she was single and about 39 at this point, maybe she thought it her last chance at a possible marriage?  I have tried looking on Ellis Island but cannot find her.  I appreciate in those days, they may not have even travelled together, or if indeed they married before they went.  If there is anyone with any information on texas records - perhaps tax records? - I would love to hear.

Many thanks,  Sally

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / SUSANNAH CLARKE B.1846 ASHFORD - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 20 March 09 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with any information on Susannah Clarke, born in Ashford about 1846.  All I can find is when she married Richard Churchfield in Lambeth, London in 1873.  she is my gt grandmother and my uncle remembers taking his father to a church in Bloxley, to look for gravestones, although he wasn't sure who my grandfather was looking for!  Susannah and Richard's wedding doesn't seem to have any Clarke relatives on the certificate.  Would love to find out something about the Clarke line of the family.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Sally

Down / Parish Records - KILKEEL, look up rqst
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 13:19 GMT (UK)  »
Am totally stuck with finding background to an Ellen O'Hanlon, according to 1911 Census, states born in Kilkeel.  On this census she states she is 60, but on previous census returns it states birth year 1853.  All I know is her father was Peter O'Hanlon - presumably from Kilkeel too? and she married into my family line of Woods.  She married Patrick Edward Woods, in Tudhoe, County Durham on 1st February 1875.  I cannot find anything relating to her before 1875 and cannot find anything at all about her father, Peter.

If there are any clever people out there who can shed some light on this family, it would be very much appreciated. :)

Many thanks, Sally

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Granddaughter of 2nd Duke of Portland
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
Any help to fill in the missing bits on the following information would be much appreciated.  We have a information from a family bible, but would like to know a bit more about any of the following.   We have a George Myers, born in 1791 in Netherlands who married a Jennet (poss surname Cavendish or Harley), in this country.  She was born in 1791 also and we have an address for her of Whitewell, Trough of Bowland, Lancs.   She is supposed to be the granddaughter of the 2nd Duke of Portland (poss Cavendish/Harley surname?).  His wife was called Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley.  Many thanks for any help :)

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / LEVITTs from Lackford - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 13 March 09 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could unravel me - I have got completely muddled over first/second marriages for Charles Levitt, born abt 1825 in Lackford, Suffolk.  I seem to find him married to a Margaret Prince in Thingoe in 1847- although I haven't got the marriage cert. it seems to be correct from the census returns.  They had a child, Robert in 1848, and on the 1851 Census they are living with Margaret's parents.  Now for the complex part - well for me anyway!  On the 1861 Census, Charles is registered as married to a Harriet and Robert is living with them, along with more children - presumably by Harriet.  Margaret Prince died in 1860.
I am fairly new to family research and one thing I can't understand is how the process of divorce - which I am guessing happened here - happened in those days.
I could even be barking up the wrong tree altogether.  What I do know is that George Levitt on the 1861 Census is a definite relation, so Charles must be too, as his father.  I can't find a birth for Charles either - would love to be able to go back another generation if there was any chance of finding his parents.
Many thanks, as usual for any help - it is much appreciated :)
