Kirkcudbrightshire / Where is Upper Auchenvey in Kirkcudbrightshire.
« on: Saturday 16 May 20 07:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi fellow researchers
According to an OPR Births from 1752, the birth place is listed as Upper Auchenvey in the parish of Parton.  I have perused many maps trying to locate upper Auchenvey but can only locateAuchenvey Plantation, a farm called Auchenvey, Auchenvey Hill & Auchenvey Burn.  However, despite spending hours scouring numerous maps with various publication dates, I have been so far unsuccessful.  This is the link to one map that I viewed (https://maps.nls.uk/view/74427638#zoom=6&lat=6911&lon=2941&layers=BT).  Am I missing the obvious?  Please help.

I am searching for Agnes Jones (born 1821 in Llanbeblig to Robert Jones & Catherine Owen) and her husband, George McNaught (born c 1817 in Scotland).  Present for the 1851 Llanbeblig census in Skinner Street, Carnarvon were George McNaught, 34, Inspector of Police, his wife Agnes 30 and their 4 children, Mary Catherine (6), George (4), David Griffith (2) & Robert (7 months).
According to the Carnarvon Traders (http://www.carnarvontraders.com/contents.html) George was the Police Superintendent, living in High Street, Carnarvon in 1844 & Inspector of Police living in Church Street in 1846.
However, I can find no further evidence of George McNaught, his wife Agnes Jones or their son Robert in the 1861 census.  I found the following children living elsewhere in the 1861 census;
•   Mary Catherine identified as a visitor at the North Wales Training College at 11 Church Street, Llanbeblig
•   George & David identified living with their aunt & uncle in King Street, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland & working as Apprentice Painters.
Can anyone help me to identify these missing ancestors?

Hi all
I have attached part of the 2nd page of a passenger manifest for the SYLVIE.  She birthed at Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in February, 1855.  I have been able to decipher most of the note written on the left side of the page.  This is what I have so far:
"The master of the schooner "Sylvie" has on board six passengers [.... ........ ...] on arrival consequently amenable under the Col. [?Colonial] Passenger Act". Signed W Ashton, Act[ing] Immigration Officer.

I am after help deciphering what appears to be 3 words.

The Common Room / Hugh & Joseph GORDON, Lost at sea in 1857
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 08:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
I am trying to find where information about deaths (lost) at sea are recorded for seamen.  Hugh GORDON, was in the merchant marine from c1842 until his death in 1857.  According to the family gravestone, both he & his brother Joseph (1840-1857) were both lost at sea.
I found Hugh, 13 years & Joseph 1 year old living with their parents Thomas & Isabella Gordon in the 1841 Kelton census.  I also have Hugh Gordon's Mate registration ticket where it says that he was born at Castle Douglas (12 Oct 1827), served 9 years as an apprentice seaman mate in the British Merchant Service in the Foreign Trade, dated 24 April 1851.
The passenger manifest for the ship Sylvie, arriving in Melbourne in Feb 1855 showed the master of the vessel was Hugh Gordon & included as a passenger his cousin William Chartres.  Nothing more is known about either Hugh or Joseph.
I am trying to find documentation about the boys being lost at sea.  Can anyone help me solve this problem or even suggest where I might search?
Best regards
Rob

The passage attached, written in what appears to be Latin, is about Alexander Charters (Charteris) of Duchrae.  Is there some learned person who would be willing to attempt an interpretation?

Kirkcudbrightshire / Looking for Margaret McNAUGHT, born c1826 in Castle Douglas
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 02:15 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for a birth, marriage or death registration for Margaret McNaught (c1826).  What I have so far is Margaret McNaught on the 1841 Kelton census (15 yrs) living with her sister Jane Henderson in Cotton Street, Castle Douglas.  I also have found her in every census up to 1891.  She married William Macmurray in 1853 in Castle Douglas (found on her daughter's birth registration- Catherine Macmurray (1855)) and was listed as deceased on her daughter's death registration - Margaret (Macmurray) Butt in Leith in 1915).  It seems odd that there doesn't seem to be any parish record available for her, but she is mentioned in other family members records.  Is anyone able to help or suggest a solution?

Canada / James TENNANT (c1808-1885) of Paris, Brandt County, Ontario, Canada
« on: Monday 28 April 14 09:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi listers
James TENNANT & his children Margaret (c1843-1876), John (c1845-) & Ann (1846-) were identified in the 1851 Paris, Canada West (Brandt County), Ontario census.  James' spouse Annie ANDERSON died 12 Oct 1846 aged 27, presumably associated with the birth of their youngest child, Ann.  The census lists James as born in Scotland & the children in Canada.
The family next appears on the Indian Queen in August 1853, bound for Melbourne, Australia.  They eventually end up in Avoca, Victoria, Australia.  According to his Testament, James was employed as a sheep drover.   I have not had any success finding the Canadian births for Annie Anderson or the 3 children.  Can anyone suggest where (no luck on Ancestry) to look next.
Best regards

Cumberland / Alexander Charters (c1756)
« on: Friday 04 April 14 00:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am searching for the birth & death data for Alexander Charters, born c1756 in ?Bolton.  He married Isabella  George (c1756-1832) in Bolton on 29 Jan 1776.  Isabella was born c1756 to William George (c1731) & Barbara Read (c1728) in Wigton.  She died 15 Feb 1832 & is buried in Bolton.
Their son John was born 28 Apr 1776 in Wigton.  As Alexander's family originated in Balmaghie & Dumfries, I searched not only Cumberland but Kirkcudbrightshire (Scotland) also for the family.  I located son John Charters on the 1851 Balmaghie census married to Henrietta McCourty.  John's first wife was Agnes Shannan.
Hope you can help.

Kirkcudbrightshire / Charters Monument, Kirk Road, parish of Balmaghie
« on: Thursday 03 April 14 23:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have located a monument to the Charters family (on Laurieston maps), adjacent to Morrison (farm) on Kirk Road, to the East of Dornell Loch, Kirkcudbrightshire.  Can you suggest a way that I might get hold of an image of the monument or just the inscription?
Hope you can help.
